Safety messaging plays an important role in Vehicle-to Vehicle (V2V) communications. By broadcasting packets via an 802.11 based technology, each vehicle informs the neighbors with its real-time status. Since this kind of information is life-critical, it should be received by all the adjacent vehicles with very high probability. In the previous work, we proposed a coded cooperative repetition approach for reliably broadcasting safety message in VANETs. It improves message's reception rate by repeating the received messages and share the scarce wireless bandwidth by coding two repetitions together. However, this method also introduces overheads. Almost 40% of all received coded repetitions are useless due to suboptimal coding decisions. In this paper, we improve this coded repetition method by providing it with more accurate information to guide the coding process. This enhancement incorporates three main techniques: reception rate estimation, neighbor state collection and opportunistic coding. Our experiments show a significant performance improvement. The overhead is reduced from over 40% to around 10% and the reception rate is increased by 15%.

This work presents the implementation of a mobile system that enables electronic healthcare data storage, update and retrieval using Cloud computing. The mobile application is developed using Google's Android operating system and provides management of patient health records and medical images (supporting DICOM format and JPEG2000 coding). The developed system has been evaluated using the Amazon's S3 cloud service. This article summarizes the implementation details and presents initial results of the system in practice.

In this paper, we propose hit-error aware lossless compression algorithms for color image compression subject to hit-error rate during transmission. Each of our proposed algorithms contains three stages. The first stage converts the RUB images to YCrCb images. The next stage uses the predictive encoder to generate the residue sequence. A genetic algorithm is adopted to search the best combination of the color transformation and prediction. At the last stage, the generated residue sequence by predictive coding is encoded. Three residue encoding methods are investigated, including bi-level block coding, or interval Huffman coding or Huffman coding. To protect the bit stream from hit errors during transmission, (7,4) Hamming code is used to protect the color transformation information, predictor type and parameters, and residue coding parameters. Our experimental results validate the coding performances in terms of the compression ratio (CR) and peak signal to noise ratio (PSTR).

In this paper, a pen-type input device is proposed to track trajectories in 3-D space by using accelerometers and gyroscopes. Inertial navigation system (INS) theory, as an autonomous positioning technology widely adopted, is employed to track the users ' handwriting motion without external reference sensors or signals. The INS-based positioning system, however, suffers from unbounded error, which grows with time due to the integration process involved. In order to solve this problem, the system error model is built to analyze the influence of error sources. Then efficient error compensation algorithm based on Zero Velocity Compensation (ZVC) is developed to reduce the effect of identified errors. The experiments show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.
