One-to-many or many-to-many communication is certainly beneficial for various network services, such as on-line meetings and entertainment live-streaming. The multicast paradigm is one of the most effective communication techniques for enabling such services. However, owing to its various limitations, it is not yet widely deployed to the Internet. For simplified and effective multicast service deployments, we propose information-Centric Cloud-Native Network Function (IC-CNF), which can be used to quickly create a multicast island in which various applications will benefit from a variety of multicast functionalities. To validate the effectiveness of IC-CNF, we implemented an actual system using an emerging microservice technology, i.e., Docker and conducted real-world experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed IC-CNF significantly reduces 4K live video streaming traffic by 71.6% compared with IP-based unicast networking. Conceptually, multiple multicast islands created by IC-CNF can be deployed and connected to the Internet;thus, a wider multicast network can be organized while maintaining efficiency.

The purpose of this research is to generate findings to support the reduction of computer supply chain greenhouse gas emissions. This is achieved by answering the question, 'can greenhouse gas abatement be delivered by alternative computer operating system displacement strategies?' We hypothesised that extending the useful lifespan of end user computing devices to 8 years by repurposing a device with a new operating system can reduce scope 3 supply chain emissions, which account for 73% of an end user computing device's carbon footprint. To test the hypothesis, we measure the carbon footprint reduction delivered by repurposing 3,150 obsolete desktop computers, which were installed with a Linux based operating system to become thin clients and support a remote working solution for a major financial institution during the recent Covid-19 pandemic. We calculate scope 3 supply chain emissions avoided by not purchasing new thin client solutions. Legacy device power consumption is also measured and extrapolated to represent the one-year period of use and compared with that of new devices to calculate the excess scope 2 emissions of the former. We find that while new devices reduce scope 2 emissions, this gain is outweighed by the reductions in scope 3 emissions from not replacing the legacy devices. Furthermore, we find that the new Linux based operating system reduces energy consumption by 22% compared with Microsoft Windows. We also calculate the financial gains from the repurposing strategy to test the perception that sustainable informationtechnology adoption is costly. Finally, the impact of remote working on commuting emissions is estimated. In conclusion, the findings show that repurposing end user computing devices contributes meaningfully to sustainability strategies from both an environmental and financial perspective.

High dynamic range (HDR) video is a high-quality video format that improves contrast and colors. Encoding HDR directly faces issues like visual redundancy, uneven bitrates, and subpar subjective visual perception. As a solution, a perception-based optimization algorithm for HDR video encoding is proposed. Firstly, leveraging the human visual system's perceptual redundancy, a perceptual lossless preprocessing model using Karhunen-Loeve (KL) transform and a subjective perceptual lossless threshold is created to cut visual redundancy. Subsequently, a coding tree unit (CTU)-level perceptual quantization model, based on human visual attention, is developed. This model estimates the perceptual saliency in spatial and temporal areas, directingCTUbitrate allocation for optimized bitrate that aligns with human perception. Experimental results show the algorithm effectively reduces visual redundancy and enhances coding performance. Compared to VTM 17.0, it reduces bitrate by an average of 22.67% (up to 53.03%), reduces coding time by 26.91% (up to 51.79%) and increases average PSNR by 5.07% (up to 10.46%).

The rapid development of cloud gaming puts tremendous pressure on network bandwidth, highlighting the crucial role of video codingtechnology. Considering substantial disparities in video generation between natural recordings and those from video games, with game videos often characterized by frequent and rapid camera rotations, directly applying conventional video compression technologies to gaming videos is inadequate. Therefore, we propose a novel cloud gaming video coding algorithm assisted by pixel-level motion vector prediction. By meticulously analyzing the coordinate mapping process within the game rendering pipeline, we present an efficient pixel-level motion vector prediction method leveraging camera information, which is integrated in the H.266VVC standard test model (VTM) as an additional inter-frame mode to compete with existing modes for rate-distortion optimization. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our algorithm, achieving a significant reduction of 11.1% in the average BD-Rate across various game scenes provided by SteamVR.
