Software applications and workloads, especially within the domains of Cloud computing and large-scale AI model training, exert considerable demand on computing resources, thus contributing significantly to the overall energy footprint of the IT industry. In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of certain software coding practices that can play a substantial role in increasing the application's overall energy consumption, primarily stemming from the suboptimal utilization of computing resources. Our study encompasses a thorough investigation of 16 distinct code smells and other coding malpractices across 31 real-world open-source applications written in Java and Python. Through our research, we provide compelling evidence that various common refactoring techniques, typically employed to rectify specific code smells, can unintentionally escalate the application's energy consumption. We illustrate that a discerning and strategic approach to code smell refactoring can yield substantial energy savings. For selective refactorings, this yields a reduction of up to 13.1% of energy consumption and 5.1% of carbon emissions per workload on average. These findings underscore the potential of selective and intelligent refactoring to substantially increase energy efficiency of Cloud software systems.

In order to effectively find the appropriate combination of data augmentation (CutBlur, CutOut, etc.) to control/improve the quality of super-resolution, we propose a method to visualize the relationship of evaluation indices (PSNR, Affinity, and Diversity) and control valuables as data augmentation based on the Self-Organizing MAP (SOM). Using the proposed method, it is possible to visualize the results of a small number of trials, to grasp the characteristics of the combination of each data augmentation and their effectiveness for the quality control of super-resolution. Furthermore, in the case of super-resolution considered as a pre-processing step for various image processing (e.g., the image classification and 3D reconstruction), the proposed method can also provide an effective combination of data augmentation. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the enhanced deep super-resolution network (EDSR) model is employed by using 16 combinations of data augmentation, CutBlur, RGB, Cutout, and CutMix, and the evaluation indices, PSNR, Affinity, and Diversity are measured. In the case of the experiment using data sets, Manga109, Urban100, the quality of super-resolution images obtained by the EDSR optimized by the proposed method, is improved the PSNR by 0.08 (dB) over the original super-resolution. Furthermore, we applied the proposed super-resolution as pre-processing of the image classification and 3D reconstruction, and it is confirmed that the accuracy and quality of the image classification (CIFAR-10) and 3D-reconstruction (buckwheat real field images) based on the proposed method are improved compared with the original ones. Comparing the number of cases without super-resolution and with super-resolution based on the proposed method, the number of keypoints is approximately 4.9 times and the number of matching points is approximately 2.2 times, indicating that, from a quantitative perspective.

Cooperative Adaptive Cruise control (CACC) has the potential to increase road throughput and safety. By utilizing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, string stability can be achieved at short inter-vehicle distances. This paper presents a decentralized control approach suitable for heterogeneous platoons with drivetrain delays. By approximating the plant with delay during the controller design, a controller is obtained that ensures string stable behavior and has a nominal performance similar to an approach where the delay is compensated by a Smith predictor. The controller presented in this paper has the added benefit that the feedback action can be determined directly by measured signals and the error converges to zero in steady state situations. By combining the controller with an acceleration observer and error observer, undesired effects of measurement noise are mitigated.
