Quantum computing is one of the most important emerging computer technologies. In quantum computing, noise mitigation plays a very important role in practical and fault-tolerant quantum systems. Quantum computers promise unparalleled computational power, but they are very fragile in the face of various noise sources. In this paper we present a good overview of noise mitigation techniques and also mainly focus on optimization and efficiency of noise mitigation codes that are tailored for standard quantum gates. We go deeper into the concepts of design and application in quantum error correction and noise mitigation codes, which are specifically optimized for mitigating errors that are used to understand gate imperfections in quantum computers. This paper discusses noise mitigation methods and histograms for various reversible logical gates, such as Feynman, Hadamard, and others, using IBM Quantum Experience.

Traffic congestion is a pervasive problem causing severe environmental and economic issues. In recent years, traffic signal control using reinforcement learning (RL) has come a long way. Most existing studies focus on using distributed agents with data exchange among neighbors, which, however, increases network complexity and usage and still suffers from the lack of broader coordination. Meanwhile, the attention mechanism has achieved tremendous success, and advances in vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications have enabled real-time collections of granular data. However, integrating these technologies into traffic signal control remains under-explored. Therefore, we present GreenLight, a forward-thinking and eco-friendly traffic signal control framework that can be applied to V2I-equipped fog computing environments. For a large urban area, traffic signals are divided into clusters, each coordinated by a fog node with an RL agent. Intra-cluster indexed self-attention is applied to extract context-aware features that the fog-residing RL agent utilizes to determine the proper signal control command. Results of simulation experiments using both synthetic and real-world scenarios show that the presented framework yields lower waiting time, emissions, and fuel consumption compared to baseline methods, indicating its potential for next-generation transportation systems.

Vehicle platooning is deemed a promising solution to improve traffic safety, reduce fuel consumption and increase traffic throughput and road capacity. Road throughput can be increased by driving at small inter-vehicle distances. Adjusting the spacing with both the preceding and the succeeding vehicles using bidirectional communication can potentially improve the platoon cohesiveness and is crucial when considering the synchronized merging scenario. Additional functionalities such as gap closing and collision avoidance are addressed using the concept of artificial potential fields (APF). This paper presents vehicle controllers for cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) for heterogeneous vehicle platoons. To achieve desired inter-vehicle spacing with respect to a predecessor and a follower, a bidirectional communication scheme is employed. Moreover, conditions for vehicle stability are provided. Finally, effectiveness of the controller is verified in a simulation study.

During vitreoretinal surgery, surgeons are required to precisely manipulate surgical tools within a confined workspace of an eye, which is roughly 2.5 cm spherical in shape. Because the surgical view can only be obtained by a microscope placed above the eyeball through the pupil, the eyeball needs to be moved or rotated during the operation to see a larger portion of the retina. At this point, general Remote Center of Motion (RCM) mechanisms require additional actuators or manual modification. On the other hand, a programmable RCM mechanism can reduce surgery time without a physical alignment procedure. This study introduces a novel six-degree-of-freedom (DoF) programmable RCM mechanism capable of generating the RCM at random positions in 3D space. Our approach combines two planar 5-bar linkage mechanisms placed in parallel, creating a double-layered configuration to establish the programmable RCM mechanism. We optimized the workspace of each planar mechanism to a customized workspace for a general eyeball model using genetic algorithms, focusing on maximizing the manipulability of the target workspace. The Phantom Omni device was utilized as a remote controller to remotely control the proposed mechanism in a transparent eyeball model with a diameter of 4 cm. Evaluation of the functionality of the programmable RCM mechanism at various RCM points showed that the overall error was less than 1 millimeter. The repeatability of the mechanism was tested and showed an accuracy of about 127 micrometers.

Heterogeneous computingsystems have been extensively applied in recent years due to their ability to greatly enhance the computation capability of parallel applications. While this kind of system can greatly increase the computation capability of parallel applications, it is usually constrained by energy cost. Therefore, to achieve a tradeoff between computing ability and energy cost, the optimization of the schedule length under the constraint of energy cost has been paid more and more attention. In this paper, a subtasks-aware task scheduling strategy is proposed, and wedefined the concepts of subtasks execution time ratio (SER) and subtask impact factor (SIF) to allocate energy of tasks reasonably. Specifically, the computational load of all subtasks of each task in the application is considered as an influence on the performance of the algorithm. Concurrently, to minimize the makespan of applications and make the allocation of energy more equitable, this paper presents a new method of pre-distribution of weighted energy. Our experimental results show that this method is effective in reducing the scheduling length under energy cost limits in parallel applications.
