This paper describes an Edge computing based architecture for a complex scenario such as a smart City. A smart City can be described (from a technical point of view) as thousands or even millions of small disposable devices (IoTs), each one capturing a physical aspect of the environment and endowed with wireless communication capability. Altogether, the generated data will feed intelligent algorithms allowing smart applications, typically running at the Cloud level. Since the Cloud has bandwidth limitations when trying to deal with such a number of connections, it becomes evident the need to introduce an intermediate stage—the Edge—between the devices and the Cloud. Furthermore, in a smart City context, it is frequent to highlight information security issues that need to be addressed. So, this project aims to develop an Edge, whose main requirements are: enforce IoTs security;be solid and robust enough to handle a huge number of logs/connections;efficiently transform low-level data into high-level information;offer a proper API to integrate with higher-level systems;and be easily scalable. Besides describing the design, this paper also presents some results supporting the decisions taken, and discusses some alternative solutions. © 2020, Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. Event recognition model is very important for machine learning. In the existing event learning model, there are many kinds of models. For example, in the study of event recognition oriented to emergencies, it is mainly based on semantics and syntax, involving feature vectors and factors. For Internet events, there has also been progress from Boolean model, vector space model to probability model and language model. Aiming at the learning of news events, a more novel recognition model is expected to be developed and processed on the basis of the existing model, so that machine learning can have new ideas and more feature points to consider, the model will be more complete and the accuracy rate will be improved. Based on the existing topic model, we update the relationship between entity, entity topic, word topic and word. In the previous stage, we add the consideration of feature words, which we will mention later, and use concise graph theory to express. By comparing the predicted content with the original content and calculating the relationship with the threshold, the event recognition result and classification can be determined. The accuracy of the new topic recognition model is obviously improved compared with the original model. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

Internet of Things in Precision Agriculture practices has made a long-lasting impact. Advanced agro-machineries helping farmers to increase their farm output and productivity. With addition of IoT enabled devices it is possible to integrate agro-machines and farmers to a network of connected things that shares valuable data with the help of which farmers can make sensible decisions on time. IoT devices boost up the smart farming through its efficient and dependent monitoring and controlling system. In this paper an IoT enable fertilizer applicator machine is proposed for the farmers of the countryside. The demand for the fertilizer is on high everywhere and so its associate problems like ineffective fertilizer placement methods, insufficient penetration of the fertilizer under the soil, unavailability of fertilizer for the crop roots during mid and late season growth stages of plant and many more. One of the possible solutions for these problems is to design and develop the machine which is able to place the fertilizers into different depths of soil so as to make it available to the crop during all growth stages of the crop. Further to monitor the amount and right placement of the fertilizer, an IoT enabled AgroCloud module architecture is proposed that will connect the person through mobile computing. This module will store the data and will communicate to the farmer for the information such as soil properties (pH value, EC), fertilizers presence (N, P, K), environmental condition (moisture, temperature) through smartphones and sensors. The complete model will benefit in increasing the yield through multi depth fertilizing concept along with incorporation of IoT assembly for better practices.

The smart grid is a complex electrical network system comprising of different subsystems at different levels of aggregation. It facilitates a bidirectional information flow among all the actors such as producers of electricity, end users of electrical energy, transmission and distribution system operators (TSO/DSO), and demand response (DR) aggregators. smart grid contains smart meters that send user statistics to the server. Accurate forecasting of the electricity usage is required in order to take controlled actions to balance the supply and demand of electricity. This forecasting can be achieved using machine learning-based predictive models. This paper deals with the forecasting of short-term and mid-term load for the grid entity using machine learning. A predictive system is designed using machine learning techniques in order to process the smart meter data which in turn is used as the training data for the model. We have developed a real-time video analytics system for measuring colonoscopy performance, including total visible surface areas, real-time feedback to the endoscopist about the measurements of visible surface areas, video clarity, preparation, and distention conditions. Our lab experiments show that the correlations between the computer and the experienced colonoscopist are: 76% in visible surface area estimation, 83.9% in clarity evaluation, 90% in preparation condition assessment, and 67.9% in distention condition evaluation. Our algorithm appears to be faster in response to dynamic scope movements compared to a 3D scope positioning device. In addition, the clinical experiment shows the system detected unexpected scope malfunction events in real-time. © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Several models have been developed for the forecasting of bankruptcy dataset but still, this is an active research area without which it may lead to a severe financial crisis. This paper focuses on the preprocessing phase which is very much essential in this domain to enhance the performance of the prediction model. We have filled out the missing values of the feature by the means of corresponding feature vector and then used oversampling technique SMOTE, normalization in the preprocessing phase is then applied to the transformed data set to five different popular classifiers such as random forest, decision tree, K-nearest neighbor (K-NN), logistic regression, and artificial neural network (ANN) to see the effect of these preprocessing steps in the prediction performance of all these five classifiers. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The modeling, simulation and analysis of the energy conversion equations describing the behavior of a hybrid system of wind turbine and biomass system for power generation are presented in this paper. A numerical model based on the aforementioned equations, encoded in MATLAB and the results were compared with the experimental data. The model predicted quite interesting results compared to the experimental data provided by the EMAC EP under various conditions. This study seeks to contribute to the new demands of future energy for the City of Cuenca, its possibilities for expansion according to the Territorial Planning Plan and with a vision that this electric energy be part of a reliable and growing smart grid. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Efficient utilization of the IoT generated data helps in the decision-making process as well as the realization of the concept of smart cities into a reality. The smart cities utilize intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to facilitate smart vehicles to operate independently without much human intervention. The ITS system utilizes the data produced by the smart infrastructure to intelligently operate the smart vehicles and make highly precise decisions in the whole smart city ecosystem. Although ITS has been in its evolutionary phase, this is the right time to realize the vulnerabilities present in the ITS infrastructure that can be exploited by the adversaries to render devastating attacks. The ITS network involves highly sophisticated infrastructure where any anomaly provokes threat to human lives. The ITS data can be manipulated by the adversaries for attacks such as password theft, information spoofing, data manipulation, information loss, eavesdropping, and key fob attacks. Blockchain provides a distributed and tamper-resistant technology by utilizing a privacy-preserving ledger to secure data in an efficient manner. The Blockchain technology eliminates the adversarial impact of the attackers by leveraging the computational capabilities of the trusted nodes in the network. In this research, we provide a secure framework for effective implementation of ITS using Blockchain technology in the centralized management of software defined networking. This framework utilizes edge computing where Blockchain provides security services. This framework is secure, provides interoperability, less information leakage, and seamless integration between versatile smart vehicles and service infrastructure. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

HR tech is a new trend in the hiring process, still facing some inefficiencies and limits. This paper sketches a high level architecture of a trusted support platform for the job placement task. Our design is based on a multifaceted analysis of current practices and requirements from technical, legal, and social perspectives. Relying on the properties of intelligent data analysis approaches, blockchain technology, and distributed identity management, this solution will enable optimisation, compliance, and improvements of the candidate selection process for job openings. The outcomes of the current work will be further applied for the identification of data formats and specific technologies to be used for the implementation. Practical use-cases are currently under development with industry partners.
