Efficient management of dams and reservoirs is essential for optimizing water resources, preventing floods, and ensuring structural reliability of the dams. In Sri Lanka, manual dam operations introduce inefficiencies and potential risks. This study aims to develop an intelligent dam control system that integrates ML (Machine Learning) and IoT (Internet of Things) for dam gate automation, flood prevention, and dam crack analysis. The system automates sluice gate operations based on water demand predictions using LightGBM, enhances flood prevention through a pre-release strategy, and employs CNNs (Convolutional Neural Networks) for accurate crack detection in dam structures. Real-time data analytics, enabled by IoT sensors and cloud-based storage, enhance the system's scalability and reliability, allowing for more responsive and adaptive management. The results indicate significant improvements in water release scheduling, flood prevention accuracy, and crack analysis precision, demonstrating the practical viability of ML and IoT integration in dam safety. This data-driven, scalable approach provides a robust solution for optimized dam management, particularly suited to regions facing similar challenges where resources and oversight are limited.

Road accidents are becoming very common in the country. The impact of road accidents can lead to the loss of many lives and can also damage many body parts. This situation becomes more serious if the riders won't wear the helmet which can be prevented by wearing the helmet and can reduce these impacts. While riding the bike, the government made it a mandatory rule to wear the helmet. Using this rule as a base, a smart helmet system is proposed which helps in providing safety to the riders and prevents accidents. The system mainly consists of Arduino Uno as a processor for processing the data, GSM & GPS modules for tracking the location and sending a message to authorized numbers, a wiper for wiping the raindrops on the helmet screen, a vibration sensor for alerting, in case the rider meets an accident and alcohol sensors as breath analyzer for the rider. The system will ensure a safe journey for riders and gives a helping hand in case of emergency. The cost of installing the whole system onto the helmet is affordable.

The data from the pervasive devices/computing can be taken from the servers of the respective service providers or application oriented services. The data can be further processed by analytics using Big data with different tools for the analytics like Bluemix, Hadoop and Matlab so, that we can get useful information in real time without further processing and delay. The data in pervasive computing is mostly unstructured. As the data generated from sensor networks and data in mobile and smart devices is increasing day by day, data analytics in unstructured data like this is difficult with limited processing power. But the tools like Hadoop, Bluemix, and Matlab with good connectivity to cloud can provide us some important data analysis tools. Big data can help in many ways which will ensure better services and responsiveness which is lacking in most of the devices right now. The inference from the captured data can be further processed for various applications like business, decisions making, forecasting etc.

This study presents a comprehensive study on smart home automation systems utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) sensor technology to achieve efficient energy conservation. The proposed system integrates ZigBee and WiFi communication protocols for effective and reliable connectivity across various smart devices within a home. Through the deployment of interconnected sensors and intelligent controllers, the system allows real-time monitoring and management of household energy usage, optimizing energy consumption and reducing waste. The combination of ZigBee for low-power, long-range sensor networks and WiFi for high-speed data transmission enables seamless interaction between smart appliances, lighting, heating, and cooling systems. Proposesd approach offers a scalable, cost-effective solution for enhancing home automation with an emphasis on energy conservation and sustainability. Also discussed the implementation, challenges, and future potential of IoT-based smart home systems for improved energy efficiency.

Advancement of micro-electromechanical systems enables easy daily activity and physiological data collection with a smart wristband and smartphone. Making use of those signals in various intelligent algorithm can contribute much to trending m-health applications. The ability of continuously monitoring physical activities and stress level can help users to better track their health condition. In this study, we propose to recognize different physical activities and detect long lasting stress level based on the 3-axis acceleration signals and physiological signals. We are able to achieve accuracy of around 97% for physical activities recognition and more than 80% for stress detection. We also discover that physiological signals alone cannot distinguish well between the high intensity activities and the stress condition.

With the rapid growth of the population, the resulting amount of pedestrian traffic puts greater pressure on the traffic management and travel services of cities. The original-destination analysis of residents' travel can effectively promote the optimization of urban regional traffic planning and the release of accurate traffic information. The rapid construction of the cellular network and the expansion of the personal smart phone, with which the user terminal interacts with the cellular network, generate a large amount of communication data, including additional time for the intelligent terminal to transmit the carrier base station. This paper proposes a mobile phone signaling-based user travel feature recognition and road network traffic monitoring system. This solution uses mobile phones as a probe to collect vehicle signaling data along the road to evaluate vehicle distribution and road traffic flow. It reflects the congestion status of the road, simultaneously analyzes the user's travel characteristics and regional distribution in the area through user trajectory, and dynamically evaluates the running status of urban road traffic.

Internet of things (IoT) is an emerging field which is increasingly becoming influential instrument in daily life. It endeavors to provide comfort and easiness in doing day to day activities in life. Moreover, it has increased the effectiveness of tasks by reducing the time span of the activity and augmenting its accuracy. It is being done with the help of internet service. IoT connects the activities with internet where it becomes easier to watch and monitor the process and the progress of the activity. Internet, the most important phenomenon of the 21 st century, has become a common norm in the society. Thus, IoT is making use of this dynamic feature of human innovation to add more innovative techniques to human lives. Besides all these innovation, human race has been subject to daunting and detrimental challenges which are putting its survival at risk. The problem of accumulating garbage is the most important one. The gigantic amount of waste material is also a big threat to climate of the earth. It is sine qua non to have a special mechanism to deal with the hectic task of collecting and transporting garbage in cities, however, recycling is another dimension of this huge problem. The focus of this research is to come up with a remedy for the problem of ever-increasing garbage. Here, an IoT based costeffective system has been developed. It has the capability to monitor the garbage in real time by using smart technology with the help of WeMos and Ultrasonic sensors. This system makes use of electronic devices and ThingSpeak platform to minimize the expenditures and time duration in the collection and transportation of the waste. This concept is unique in itself as it makes garbage bins able to communicate their status, periodically, to the authorities. This data can be seen on internet and it is not bounded by any specific location as internet is a global phenomenon and so do the proposed system.

Wrist-worn smart devices are providing increased insights into human health, behaviour and performance through sophisticated analytics. However, battery life, device cost and sensor performance in the face of movement-related artefact present challenges which must be further addressed to see effective applications and wider adoption through commoditisation of the technology. We address these challenges by demonstrating, through using a simple optical measurement, photoplethysmography (PPG) used conventionally for heart rate detection in wrist-worn sensors, that we can provide improved heart rate and human activity recognition (HAR) simultaneously at low sample rates, without an inertial measurement unit. This simplifies hardware design and reduces costs and power budgets. We apply two deep learning pipelines, one for human activity recognition and one for heart rate estimation. HAR is achieved through the application of a visual classification approach, capable of robust performance at low sample rates. Here, transfer learning is leveraged to retrain a convolutional neural network (CNN) to distinguish characteristics of the PPG during different human activities. For heart rate estimation we use a CNN adopted for regression which maps noisy optical signals to heart rate estimates. In both cases, comparisons are made with leading conventional approaches. Our results demonstrate a low sampling frequency can achieve good performance without significant degradation of accuracy. 5 Hz and 10 Hz were shown to have 80.2% and 83.0% classification accuracy for HAR respectively. These same sampling frequencies also yielded a robust heart rate estimation which was comparative with that achieved at the more energy-intensive rate of 256 Hz.

In view of the sparsely populated areas in remote areas, low network coverage, limited transmission resources, and difficult equipment maintenance, in order to realize basic regional video surveillance and ecological monitoring with the problems which are seriously lack of conditions and means, based on the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of video surveillance systems in remote areas, this paper proposes a remote video surveillance system based on NB-IoT. By adopting LTE BC20 NB-IoT module and camera to form NB-IoT terminal, based on cellular network, the collection, return and presentation of temperature and humidity data, smoke data and mobile cameras' positions' data of Louguantai were completed. The simulation verification of the smart video surveillance system in low-power area under narrow-band conditions showed that the system achieves the expected goals well.

Many cities around the world implement the intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) concept to reduce road traffic congestion. This concept implies the usage of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to ensure a better traffic flow, especially in crowded urban areas. Sensors networks became part of road infrastructure and have as main responsibilities to collect real-time traffic data and to send them to Traffic Management Centres (TMCs) which control further the traffic lights timings. Today's technologies meet some limitations in terms of efficiency. This paper starts with an overview of these limitations to create a path for discussing the challenges that the development of ITS will meet in the context of Future Networks (FN) 2030 concept. Based on this development path, the identification of current limitations and possible future challenges consists of an important step of this research. Further, the main contribution in this research is to show how the ITS shall adapt to meet the requirements of FN 2030 by providing an architecture for Future ITS 2030 that meets the general ITS needs.
