As cyberthreats become more commonplace, the teaching of cybersecurity concepts at an introductory level is becoming increasingly important. However, teaching this subject in an engaging manner is challenging. This work investigates the use of a game-based learning approach to teaching cybersecurity concepts in the form of a card game called Program Wars. Within the game, players use cards to create a representation of a computer program while launching cyberattacks at their opponents and defending their own program. As the initial version of the game presented cybersecurity concepts at only a high-level, Program Wars v.2.0 was created to introduce players to eight common cyberattacks and the tools used to defend against them. The results of a user study show that after playing Program Wars v.2.0 a player's knowledge of cybersecurity concepts is improved, showing that our game-based learning approach provides an effective means for introducing cybersecurity concepts to those with little or no prior knowledge. As Program Wars is a freely available web-based game, it can easily be integrated into classes to improve a student's knowledge of cybersecurity concepts.

Are you ready to explore the next frontier in e-learning with ChatGPT? This innovative artificial intelligence technology will revolutionize the way we teach and learn in Moodle, the world-renowned learning Management System. This article draws attention to five powerful capabilities of ChatGPT: contextual conversing, feedback response, analytical power, adaptive tutoring, and multilingual capabilities. It explains a three-step technical procedure of integrating ChatGPT in Moodle using a publicly accessible Moodle instance at ***. A follow-up of eight use cases provides a user manual for the system, prompting for information, performing calculations on numerical data, interpreting data analysis results, generating data for educational purposes, supporting course design activities, providing emotional support, and supporting extended learning. The article concludes with a discussion of six challenges that may arise, but overall maintains an optimistic view of the future of applying ChatGPT to enhance teaching and learning. This research has the potential to inform and inspire multiple stakeholders in higher education institutions (e.g., students, teachers, system admins) to experiment with ChatGPT in their online teaching and learning environments.

The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced various dimensions of higher education systems globally, including the teaching and learning process of English as a Foreign Language. Pedagogical practice has been altered by the confinement of lockdown measures, which affected the level of student engagement. Consequently, this study aimed to analyze the level of student engagement during the pandemic. A realist evaluation guided the analysis of this study to answer the research question: what worked for the students in this context and why? Descriptive statistics were also used to analyze the results that emerged from a student engagement questionnaire. The results revealed that the level of student engagement varied according to the different dimensions analyzed using the questionnaire instrument. There was a strong connection between student capabilities and the teaching environment. Additionally, it can be concluded that distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown was a successful teaching-learning medium for engaged students that are confident in using technology. It is essential to consider different engagement dimensions in different circumstances to help students achieve the desired learning outcomes during prolonged periods of imposed online learning.

In an Internet-of-things (IoT) network, incoming tasks at IoT devices can be executed locally or at a Mobile Edge computing (MEC) server. The problem of minimizing the total discounted delay can be formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) problem. Since the arrival rate of the incoming tasks is typically unknown, Reinforcement learning (RL) methods that converge to the optimal solution, can be adopted. Q-learning (QL) and Double Q-learning (DQL) are two popular RL algorithms. However, the overestimation and the underestimation biases prevalent in QL and DQL algorithms, respectively, may help and hurt the learning process, depending on the stochasticities of various task scheduling strategies. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive RL algorithm that switches to the appropriate Q-learning variant depending on the IoT network's stochasticity. Simulation results are presented to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm over other state-of-the-art solutions.
