Assessment has long been seen as an important part of teaching and has shown to have an impact on how students approach learning. In this study students' experience of assessment in an online introductory programming course is investigated. This is studied through semi-structured interviews, with seven students, which are analyzed using a phenomenographic research approach. The results consist of five categories in which the students experience the given assessment;the grading is important to the teacher, the grading is important to the student, assessment as guidance, assessment as an opportunity to learn and assessment as a way to communicate. This paper also shows that three categories, assessment as guidance, assessment as an opportunity to learn and assessment as a way to communicate, are the most desirable.

learning and academic achievement are attributable to the complex cognitive phenomenon of self-regulation. There was a need to study self-regulation, a popular research area in education, on engineering students learning Statics. However, there was no specific instrument to measure self-regulation in fundamental engineering courses like Statics. Therefore, a modified self-regulated learning (SRL) instrument was used in the study that was carried out at four higher institutions in Malaysia, with a total of over 600 student participants. The Motivated Strategies for learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was modified for Statics and using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), nine new factors and respective items for self-regulation were confirmed.

This paper presents a theoretical discussion of a culturally relevant pedagogical approach to computer science education. The paper builds a framework of strategies that computer science educators can use to empower diverse learner populations, especially those from underrepresented minority groups, to participate in computer science as well as other STEM fields. This framework draws from education theories on sociocultural learning, critical pedagogy, and culturally relevant pedagogy.

this study delves into activity theory as a lens for explaining the goal of international students' adapting to and coping in their new educational environment using nostalgia and social media as tools. This study offers both scholarly and policy implications for the adaptation and coping of international students in New Zealand by presenting their ecosystem as an Activity System that relays their interaction with the tools, community, rules in their new environment.

Education in multicultural environments poses challenges for both educators and students. Similarly to other subjects, software engineeringteaching is faced with difficulties in the need to adapt the teaching style and contents to the various cultural backgrounds of the students. Based on a small-scale study, this paper attempts to highlight perspectives of students belonging to various cultural backgrounds on software engineering, as well as their views on the practicalities of software development.

Problem solving is an important skill for engineering graduates to develop. However, in most traditional engineering classrooms, students practice solving well structured problems which is not sufficient because engineers need to be able to solve real world problems which are ill structured. Therefore it is important for engineering students to be trained in ill-structured problem solving. In this paper, we present a new teaching-learning strategy for ill-structured problem solving based on productive failure and instructor prompts. Students do unguided in-class exploration of engineering problems in groups, after which they receive instruction on problem solving strategies. We conducted a pilot study by incorporating our teaching-learning strategy in a senior electrical engineering course. We found that students developed several ill-structured problem solving skills and showed a range of problem solving behaviors and heuristics.
