Education in multicultural environments poses challenges for both educators and students. Similarly to other subjects, software engineering teaching is faced with difficulties in the need to adapt the teaching style and contents to the various cultural backgrounds of the students. Based on a small-scale study, this paper attempts to highlight perspectives of students belonging to various cultural backgrounds on software engineering, as well as their views on the practicalities of software development.

Problem solving is an important skill for engineering graduates to develop. However, in most traditional engineering classrooms, students practice solving well structured problems which is not sufficient because engineers need to be able to solve real world problems which are ill structured. Therefore it is important for engineering students to be trained in ill-structured problem solving. In this paper, we present a new teaching-learning strategy for ill-structured problem solving based on productive failure and instructor prompts. Students do unguided in-class exploration of engineering problems in groups, after which they receive instruction on problem solving strategies. We conducted a pilot study by incorporating our teaching-learning strategy in a senior electrical engineering course. We found that students developed several ill-structured problem solving skills and showed a range of problem solving behaviors and heuristics.

In the 21st Century, many researchers realized the importance of computing and suggested developments in learning computing. Therefore, there is a need to design a new 'integrated pedagogy' for learning computing to align with the Malaysian Education Blueprint. This will produce future generations that are well-equipped in terms of knowledge and skills. This paper aims to identify computing pedagogy using the Flipped Classroom Model (FCM) in the Malaysian Education setting because the FCM transforms traditional teaching and learning and maximizes the use of technology. Literature reviews and interviews with three computing teachers were carried out to obtain opinions on using the FCM. The literature reviews and teachers' responses identified that the FCM will benefit the students and teachers. The overall findings suggested that the FCM may be implemented in computing subjects and taking into considerations other factors like students' motivation, for active learning or teacher-centered perceptions in implementing FCM.

Object detection in remote sensing imagery is crucial for numerous applications such as urban planning, environmental monitoring, and disaster response. This paper investigates the effectiveness of transfer learning using YOLOv8 for object detection in remote sensing, specifically focusing on the DIOR and Ships datasets. We compare models trained from scratch with those pre-trained on the COCO dataset and subsequently fine-tuned on DIOR. Our experiments demonstrate that the pre-trained YOLOv8 model significantly outperforms the scratch-trained model across all evaluated metrics, including precision, recall, and mean Average Precision (mAP). The pre-trained model demonstrates enhanced detection capabilities and reduced misclassifications. Detailed analysis using confusion matrices highlights the model’s improved ability to distinguish between visually similar categories and detect smaller, less distinct objects. These findings underscore the advantages of leveraging transfer learning to enhance the performance of object detection models in remote sensing imagery. Our study concludes that fine-tuning pre-trained models on specific datasets leads to robust and accurate detection, offering a valuable approach for remote sensing applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

With the increasing importance of STEM education and the popularity of microblogging, it becomes important to study the nature of the social network within STEM education in order to observe how members of that community work together. A social network analysis (SNA) was conducted to examine the nature of the STEM education community and its key players on Twitter. The findings from the SNA will show: categories of the key players in this social network, to what extent a community exists on the Twitter platform, and the types of interactions that users contribute to the community, and kinds of information being discussed.

Designing an educational online learning environment requires proper planning as it will influence students' learning experiences. For the purpose of developing a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment, the development process should be properly designed to meet the objectives of learning. In this research, the design of a CSCL environment is explained using the Three-phase Development Model (3PD) which serves as a guideline for developing a functional learning environment. This study attempts at promoting interaction in CSCL by designing interaction during the development process of the CSCL environment rather than scaffolding interaction during the online learning process.

Fraudsters are attracted to the e-commerce sector because of the increasing transaction amounts, underscoring the crucial importance of efficient fraud prevention and detection mechanisms. This paper delves into e-commerce fraud detection through a systematic literature review, exploring the evolving landscape of advanced technologies, particularly machine learning automation. This technology enhances the detection capabilities for fraudulent activities by efficiently processing large volumes of e-commerce transaction data. As fraudulent transactions become more complex, there is a need for efficient ways to counteract these risks. To combat fraudulent transactions, there's a growing need for effective methods. Our primary objective is to comprehensively study various algorithms employed in e-commerce for fraud prevention. The survey focuses on comparing and assessing the effectiveness of this algorithm. The aim is to provide insight into the effectiveness of the proposed techniques in comparison to existing techniques. A supportive environment is one of the key factors that contribute to an effective learning process. This study aims to determine the factors that help build a supportive learning environment in order to keep the student engaged in academic and other activities of the institute/university. The paper reviews various criteria that help in the creation of such an environment for students. Based on the readings, the author has developed a framework encompassing the main elements of a supportive learning environment. A questionnaire was administered to students from six institutes. It was found that instructional, peer, institutional, and technical support play a key role in the creation of a supportive environment for the student. The results of this study can be used by educationists and management committees of universities/institutes to provide an effective learning environment for the students.

White matter alterations are increasingly implicated in neurological diseases and their progression. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) has been included in many international-scale studies to identify alterations in white matter microstructure and connectivity. Yet, quantitative investigation of DW-MRI data is hindered by a lack of consistency due to variations in acquisition protocols, sites, and scanners. Specifically, there is a need to harmonize the preprocessing of DW-MRI datasets to ensure that compatible and reproducible quantitative metrics are derived from each site, including (1) bundle-wise microstructure measures, (2) features of white matter fiber bundles, and (3) connectomics measures. In the MICCAI CDMRI 2023 QuantConn challenge, participants are provided raw data from the same individuals taken with two different acquisition protocols on a single 4 tesla scanner in the same scanning session and asked to preprocess the data in order to minimize acquisition differences while retaining biological variation. Here, we outline the testing framework, provide baseline pre-harmonized results, and discuss the learning implications of this challenge. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
