We have conducted a national survey of computing education at Japanese universities in 2016. We then developed computing curriculum standard J17 for the departments majored in computing. In this paper, we perform a comparison analysis between achievement and requirements for computing program. We collect requirements for computing programs through a survey at five J17 curriculum development committees: CS, CE, SE, IS and IT. We also compare the achievement of existing computing programs and the requirements of the committees using the proposed framework. Reasons of the differences are analyzed also in this paper. Furthermore, we find many computing programs which do not correspond to neither of the requirements. Although the analysis is performed under the context of Japan, it can also be applied to computing education at other countries.

Research conducted on laboratory instrument is performed to pursue broader knowledge that can be generalized and systemized for practical application in the teaching and learning process. Pneumatic Training Instrument (PTI) is an exercise-based laboratory instrument which is employed to develop students' practical skills while conducting experiments in the laboratories. This paper highlights the practical skills stipulated for technology/engineering programs in the PTI laboratory. The laboratory tasks require the students to apply their knowledge and skills on PTI experiments. Students were exposed to the theoretical aspects of PTI through the lectures and later perform the experiments by completing the worksheet instructions on PTI. In regards to their practical skills, assessment is conducted during designations, demonstrations and installations employed by lecturer which must be aligned with the course learning outcomes and teaching and learning in the laboratory. This paper investigates the level of knowledge and practical skills expected of Diploma in engineering Technology students in two institutions of higher learning. These institutions offer similar PTI course with comparable course learning objectives (CLO), teaching and learning activities and assessment techniques in the Pneumatic Laboratory. Pneumatic is a common module taken by all the technology/engineering students for the both case study institutions. In order to answer the research questions of the study, a qualitative approach was undertaken. The CLO and the course syllabus pertaining to the PTI experiments were analyzed to compare the structure of PTI practice in the institutions. The interface between the theories and practical skills sourced from the lectures, demonstration and practice on PTI will also be discussed in the paper. In this study, we will investigate a new image signal processing method in order to develop a highly useful walking support device for visually impaired people. Visually impaired people walk independently using assistive devices. Currently, there are many support devices that use object detection and object recognition using deep learning, but there are still no highly useful devices. The smallest unit constituting an image signal is a pixel. Adjacent pixels are correlated with each other. The positional relationship of pixels expresses the features of objects, and scenery in the image. Autoregressive (AR) model is a regression analysis method used to analyze time-series signals. AR models are one of the basic methods for signal processing for speech recognition and control. Furthermore, in image signal processing, it can be used as a signal processing method when data has some kind of order, such as texture feature extraction, contour processing, and video processing. In this experiment, we converted the pixel array of the image signal into a one-dimensional time-series signal and process the signal. We tried to identify objects or regions within images. The method proposed in this study may be used to extract "Point of Interest" (POI) and "Point of Reference" (POR), which are important information for visually impaired people. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Advanced hardware and software systems can be employed to equip autonomous agents with the ability to explore their surroundings while minimizing the risk of collisions. Ensuring Artificial Intelligence (AI) safety is crucial to providing reliable service to consumers in various sectors, such as the military, education, healthcare, and automotive sectors. One way to increase the accuracy and performance of an AI agent is by guiding it in a specific environment through human intervention. This study presents the design of a system that can be controlled by two methods. The first method uses an AI controller with the Proximal Policy Optimizer (PPO) algorithm to guide the agent automatically. The second method requires human interaction to guide the agent using keyboard inputs (manual controller). The Machine learning Agents Toolkit (ML-Agents) was used to train the agent with a PPO algorithm with an Intrinsic Curiosity Module (PPO + ICM). The objective of this study is to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of the two presented methods. We conducted both methods for ten minutes and measured the Goal (G), Collision (C), and GC-ratio or Goal (G) Collision (C) Ratio. The GC-ratio is a key metric for measuring the frequency of collisions between the agent and obstacles. The results show that the AI controlled method achieved 45 goals and 27 collisions, resulting in a GC-ratio of 0.66. On the other hand, the manually controlled method provided 30 goals and 6 collisions, resulting in a GC-ratio of 0.83. Each method has its own merits and limitations, and the decision to choose one over the other ultimately depends on the specific needs of the application. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

teaching computer graphics is challenging since the subject requires a diverse range of skills such as mathematics, programming, and spatial reasoning. Researchers have attempted to address this by investigating different teaching methodologies and proposing various learning tools. However, most tools proposed previously are desktop-based and involve manipulation of 3D scenes using mouse or other similar interaction devices which use the same concepts as those of modelling and animation tools. Therefore, there is a need for an approach using handheld devices which allows interaction with the real environment so that interaction with 3D scenes would be easier, more natural, accessible, and intuitive. One potential approach is to use Augmented Reality (AR) technologies using mobile devices as it enables intuitive interactions and integrate virtual objects in a real-world view. In this research, we review previous research on tools for computer graphics education and suggest how augmented reality can be used to improve students learning of computer graphics.

Soft skills are significant to the engineering labour market, especially in Information Technology where demands are high on for instance communication skill, teamwork skill, presentation skill, etc. Despite their importance, educating students in using those skills is not fully included in the bachelor education programmes, especially in developing countries. This project aims to gain insights in how soft skills are taught in Vietnamese universities, and which skills are missing in their bachelor education programmes. The findings are intended to support education in order to develop the teaching of soft skills for Vietnamese students, and decrease the unemployment rate of Vietnamese graduates. In this project, semi-structured interviews, by e-mail, have been used to collect the data. There are eight Vietnamese interviewees who have experiences from various education programmes. The interview transcripts were then analysed and categorised into themes. The results of our work are a preliminary identification of missing skills in the undergraduate programmes, and a set of proposed skills that could be considered to improve the education programmes.

The pillars of Computer Science and engineering (CSE) curriculum are Data Structures, Database management systems, languages, operating systems and algorithms. This article explains the relationship and connectivity of these core courses. Authors follow the pedagogy technique to teach the Data Structures (DS) by considering its evolution. The article focus on the method of providing connectivity between the building blocks of DS like Data Containers, Container Iterators, Algorithms and Functors. Each data structure is explained by considering its property, iterations, problems and applications. The three fold method is followed to teach DS, which includes think, build and discuss phases. The pedagogy techniques practiced by authors are revealed many mysteries, which are not discussed in most of the DS text books.

One of the challenges to promoting computer science in schools is to create and retain interest in programming. We describe a pilot project for primary and secondary students in Macau to introduce NET Gadgeteer, a rapid prototyping platform for building electronic devices. The aim of the yearlong project was to generate interest in building devices, while learning the basics of programming concepts. Our experience with the weekend workshops indicates that the hands-on approach helped to engage the students. Results from a survey of 155 students point to increased engagement through active learning and growing enthusiasm to learn programming. We report some issues that surfaced and give recommendations for teachers who wish to consider such devices for teaching programming to novices. We hope to further explore ways to incorporate learning programming through tangible devices in the curriculum in local schools.

This study investigated the effects of teaching history of computing with videos of historical figures. Augmented reality (AR) techniques were applied to assist student accessing the videos of historical figures while reading a printed textbook. Whenever a student was interested in a historical figure, one could use a tablet PC to scan the figure's picture, and the corresponding video about the person would then be played on the screen. We adapted thirteen videos of historical figures in computer network field and adopted a quasi-experimental method to evaluate the effectiveness of the AR-based learning approach. Two classes of high school students, with a total of 84 students, participated in the experiment. One class of the students used Tablet PCs to access the videos of historical figures;and the other class using traditional didactic instruction served as the control group. The data collected for analysis are students' achievement test scores and answers to a questionnaire, which consists of questions on attitudes toward learning, perspectives of nature of science, and perceptions on the AR activities. Our findings showed that the AR-based historical figure videos helped students comprehend learning contents and promoted their attitudes toward learning. Students appreciated the convenience of using AR tools to access the history videos. Future research should investigate other approaches to integrate AR with the videos of historical figure;and in general, to integrate AR with other media format of computing history.
