Over the last century, rapid technological developments have substantially changed the landscape of the education world. As we can see today, most of the teaching and learning activities at all level of studies have been integrated with various forms of technologies, particularly with the Information and Communication Technology. This technology often relates to online learning, which usually involves the use of various forms of 2-dimensional applications. However, the recent times have seen many educational institutions around the globe shifting their interest towards the use of a new application for online learning, known as the virtual world. The virtual world has unique capabilities and unlike its 2-dimensional counterpart, it can generate a 3-dimensional social learning space, amplify the sense of presence and immersion of students, and support various forms of communications and interactions. Utilizing these capabilities with proper instructional strategies in conducting online learning activities can greatly enhance the online learning experience. Without a doubt, the virtual world has been considered as an important tool in modern education practice, especially for collaborative learning. To obtain a comprehensible view of this trend, this paper reviews some of the latest studies which have involved collaborative learning in virtual world. Four main topics were extracted from the reviewed studies: categories of virtual worlds, collaborative strategies used in the studies, focus of each study, and challenges of collaborative learning in virtual world.

Civil engineering educators need to develop effective teaching techniques in order to prepare the current students with the necessary sustainability knowledge. In view of its importance, aspects of sustainability are broadly integrated into existing civil engineering modules at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. Furthermore, specific modules focusing in sustainability issues, principles and aspects in the wider construction industry were designed and incorporated in the civil engineering curriculum. In order to enhance our undergraduate students' understanding and learning experience, an additional module was incorporated for the past four years that is substantially devoted to investigate major civil engineering projects employing sustainable agenda. The students are free to choose case studies and are required to find, sort, synthesize and present information relating to the main issues surrounding sustainability of major civil engineering projects. The students report/present their findings in the form of essays. In this paper, the effectiveness of the use of major civil engineering projects employing sustainable agenda as case studies and the students' appreciation of sustainable practice in civil engineering are investigated. Furthermore, the lecturers' and students' views on the extent of coverage of the key elements of sustainability in the civil engineering degree course are evaluated. The outcomes indicate that the use of major civil engineering projects employing sustainable agenda as case studies develops the students' appreciation of the contemporary engineered environment and sustainability in civil engineering. It, furthermore, develops their appreciation of the continual developments and improvements in civil engineering knowledge/practice. A common view by the lecturers and students, as indicated from this study, is that the degree course needs to further cover the key issues of sustainable construction.

Web Technology is the development of the mechanism that allows two or more computer devices to communicate over a network. To understand such a complex system there is a need of experiential learning. Authors adopted an "Experiential learning" for teaching the web technology course. teaching with a hands-on session where the teacher explains the concepts with demonstration and students simultaneously practice and also modify the fields to observe the change. After the end of chapter the students learning is verified by giving the structured enquiry category assignments and are evaluated. At the end of delivery of course that is one month before the term end the collective learning is verified through the course project. Two course projects are carried out by the students as a team of two. One is the intranet project, where student understands how to connect and work in a local area network and the other is internet project, where student learns how to host a website globally. In both the projects students used LINUX platform with LAMP as a framework and developed web apps using HTML5, CSS 3, JQuery, PHP and SQL. The experiential learning enhanced the student's domain knowledge of Linux architecture, computer networks, and web and database servers applying in real time scenarios. Finally, we conclude such practical/programming oriented courses should be designed as hands-on lab course to attain the best outcomes.

In learning to program, there is a complex interplay between the learning of practice (what to write, how to read compiler messages, etc.) and the learning of theory (what programming constructs are good for, how they "work", how the programme executes etc.). Our on-going project focuses on this interplay - normally not directly visible for the learners themselves - and offers insights about the complexity of the learning process. From a micro-level analysis of video films of students' collaboration in lab sessions, we follow how the students attention moves from one aspect to another (theoretical or practical), and then further, until, in good cases, we can document that a meaningful learning has taken place. Theoretically the project takes its point of departure in a framework, inspired by the roots of phenomenography and variation theory. Theory and practice are here interpreted from a pragmatic perspective, close to the students' (and, as we believe, most programmers) intuitive understanding and use of the terms. The ultimate aim of the project is to support teachers and teaching institutions to teach programming in such ways that students better learn how to program. That is, the project takes its point of departure in the disciplinary learning - the learning of programming - and aims to propose possible improvements in our teaching, by building on the insights gained by the micro-analyses of the students' learning. In this paper we illustrate, from an example, how the research process leads us from micro-level observations on how the students attentions move from different aspects (both theoretical and practical) of the half-ready computer program they aim to finalize, over our analysis of the lab sessions, to some insights in the complex interplay between theory and practice in programming students' learning process.

Literature has evidence showing that the active learning strategies used in classroom increase students' conceptual understanding well beyond the traditional classroom teaching. Active learning strategies become even more useful for teaching-learning of courses such as 'Data Structures and Algorithms', as such courses require to create time and space efficient algorithms using appropriate data structures to solve any ill-structured problem. Think-Pair-Share (TPS) is a classroom active learning strategy in which students work on individual activity, discuss with peers and share their newly discovered knowledge with class. In this paper, TPS is used with a goal to study its effectiveness on conceptual understanding and students' engagement in Data Structures and Algorithms course of second year engineering undergraduate. The field study was conducted using mixed-methods research design to study the effectiveness of TPS intervention. Pre-post test scores, observation protocol and student and instructor perception is used to measure the conceptual understanding, engagement and motivation respectively. The results show significantly high level of engagement during TPS activities as compared to traditional lectures. The posttest and pretest scores show that the learning gain is higher for the topics taught using TPS as compared to the topics taught without TPS. The qualitative data obtained from students and the instructor show desirable positive effect of TPS in affective, behavioral and cognitive dimensions on students.

In E-Health care, one of the primary requirements is the Electronic transmission of medical images. This transmission must and should not be liable to the hackers to manipulate the whole medical image by modifying only one part of it. For this purpose we use the watermarking techniques. In this manuscript represented two dissimilar watermark algorithms for medical images. Image hiding is designed for safety application particularly to defend an unauthorized person's secret message. Due to the immense growth and use of the Internet, the problem of Internet security is growing. Under this situation, it needs more safety to convert the data commencing the source to the recipient. Academic research has also suggested the use of a compression algorithm and cryptography in an effective medical images watermarking method inside E-healthcare applications. Only trust and reliability are guaranteed by the system. To solve this, the author recommended a biometrics system that produces an authentication, confidentiality and reliability systems base on an effective medical images watermark in the E-healthcare applications. The classification suggested includes the verification biometric fingerprint, privacy crypto to graphing and reversible integrity watermarking. The projected method consists essentially of two phases, for example (i) watermarking embedded procedure and (ii) watermarking extraction method. The test was conducted with electronic health records for the different medical pictures and the efficiency of the projected algorithms is analyze using a peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and standardized correlation. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This work represents an approach that uses the Black Widow Optimization (BWOA) method, a powerful encryption technique, to improve the security of iris biometric data. As it is dependable and distinctive. Nowadays, iris recognition became much popular in biometric identification systems. But still, to keep the confidentiality and privacy of iris images is a significant obstacle. By using traditional security techniques, it can be difficult to afford protection to confidential biometric data from attacks and intrusions. In this approach, we proposed a distinctive encryption technique that joins the features of Black Widow Optimization algorithm with the benefits of iris image cryptography. This recommended method is a multi-phase encryption strategy that includes feature extraction, encryption and decryption phases. The BWOA maximize the encryption settings, accelerating the encryption operation security and strength. The black widow spiders with their hunting behavior stimulates it. Researches on common iris image database shows how effective and strong the proposed method is. A complete evaluation of performance criterion, such as encryption/decryption speed, key sensitivity, and strength to frequent attacks, shows the superiority of BWOA-based Encryption over traditional security techniques. The outcomes show that iris image encryption has significantly improved efficiency and security, making it more resilient to security risks. Additionally, comparisons with current encryption methods demonstrate the advantages and potential of the suggested approach for protecting private iris biometric data. This research advances biometric data security by providing a strong encryption framework that uses the Black Widow Optimization algorithm. It has promising implications for secure iris image authentication systems in various applications that demand elevated security and privacy measures. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Software engineering (SE) education presents many challenges, especially related to hands-on activities that aim to improve practical skills and competencies to solve real-world problems. Some new learning Approaches, such as Flipped Classroom (FC), emerged and can improve learning processes in this scenario. This doctoral work explores the Flipped Classrooms ideas, identifies challenges, and proposes a tool for reducing them, thus contributing to improved software engineering teaching research. Furthermore, the study aims to combine Adaptive learning and Flipped Classroom approaches to offer study guides personalization and positively impact SE students' learning during outside classroom studies.

In this era of rapid development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), online collaborative and social learning has been seen as one of the ways to encourage students' critical thinking skills. Past studies have proven that students' critical thinking skills were shown significantly when it is done socially and collaboratively amongst peers. Previous researches also stated that cooperative teams achieve at higher levels of thought and preserve information longer than learners who work quietly as individuals. In addition, working in a collaborative environment also involves processes of evidence and argumentation. Argumentation refers to making convincing claims backed up by sound evidence and broad understanding of various aspects of an issue. Argumentation learning activities can serve as an effective mechanism of spreading of knowledge through a network of exchanges in small groups. However, argumentative knowledge construction (AKC) in social collaborative learning environments is often insubstantial. So, does an argumentative learning activity in social collaborative learning environment truly result in enhancing students' higher order thinking skills (HOTs) and knowledge construction? Thus, the purpose of this paper is to discuss a meta-analysis on thinking skills that lead to the need for social collaborative learning and argumentative knowledge construction process towards enhancing students' HOTs.

The aim of this study is to assess the use of culturally relevant games in order to introduce computer science education to school students. The paper discusses how game educators can utilize to empower and encourage pupils to learn computer science concepts at schools within a Maori cultural context. The goal of this study is to motivate and establish a culturally relevant learning climate in which school children from underrepresented populations are intrinsically encouraged to engage in a discipline where they historically are underrepresented. We aim to utilize the learners cultural referents as a medium to develop the e-learning tools to ensure school children gain access to study coding while maintaining their cultural integrity
