Mathematics is considered a fundamental component of engineering education, thus it is important to determine the mathematical competencies (MCs) attained by engineering undergraduate students so that they will be able to use these competencies to support their professional engineering work. The MCs were identified based on Niss's work, namely;thinking mathematically, reasoning, problem posing and solving, modeling, representing, communicating, symbolism and formalism, using aids and tool. This research was done to explore MCs in engineering mathematics curriculum by conducting two studies;a study on engineers' MCs requirements at the workplace and a study on the engineering students' MCs acquirements at the university. In the first phase, 22 engineers from various industries in Malaysia responded to a set of open-ended questionnaires followed by interview session with 10 selected engineers. In the second phase, 41 engineering undergraduate students participated by answering a set of questionnaires with open ended questions The data of the research were analyzed qualitatively using schema coding approach as well as appropriate statistical analysis. The findings from both phases gave indication the MCs required should be the focus of engineering mathematics curriculum. Particularly it highlighted which MCs were actually attained by the undergraduate engineering students as compared to the MCs that were needed based on the demands at the workplace. The results gave suggestion that mathematics curriculum should also focus on MCs as outcomes besides the development of mathematical concepts and skills.

this paper introduces a simple method of building a prototype cluster of the Raspberry Pi. The Pi cluster is a powerful-low -cost tool for teaching the complex concepts of parallel and distributed computing to undergraduate E&CS students. The performance of the presented Pi cluster is assessed using two different applications of face recognition and image encryption, which are computationally expensive. The paper explains how to compare the performance of the Pi cluster against a traditional high performance traditional cluster. The comparison is designed to help undergraduate students understand the state of the art of the clusters. The paper explains how the Pi clusters fit in the CS curriculum at Old Dominion University. The presented project-based learning is an effective teaching approach that helps the learning of struggling engineering/computer science students from minorities and women groups at ODU.

Some complex problems in the computational area are learning programming and algorithms. Authoring system is a subject that can be considered as complex as it integrates the use of scripting language like Action Script in Flash, Active Server Pages (ASP) and Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP). The normal problem that resides when it comes to programming is handling error as it is not an easy task and for those who are new, might find this very troublesome. Handling the error requires proper planning and skills in analyzing problem which students usually lack at. Reflection in learning is really helpful in helping students learn the Authoring System subject effectively as they are encourage to share ideas, experiences and perspective actively on the emerging issues of Action Script topic especially in discussing the concepts and errors. With the need for reflection in developing the required skills in learning Authoring System, how then do we ensure and measure the quality in student reflection journals and its contact in assessing the subject content and students' performance in learning? Quality is defined as " processes or outcomes" [1]. In the context of this research study, quality is determined by assessing the progression of reflective processes based on the interventions given. As an educator, we need to be aware on how new technologies act as the engagers and facilitators in the reflection purposes. Blog is one of the emerging technologies that can offer such pedagogical benefits as reflective tools and social affordances across disciplines provided that one can read and make comments that lead to meaningful discussion for common interests and individual differences [2]. Although blogging enable deep reflection in each individual blogs, somehow it failed to encourage peer feedback to each other blogs and collaboration among students to support reflective thinking as expected [3]. It has been observed that currently in institute of higher learning, Computer Aided Design systems have been taught in different disciplines with different focuses. Computer Aided Design software has been the prime tool to support Mechanical engineering courses in higher institution throughout the world. As the technology changes rapidly, instructors must also keep the focus on the curriculum of the particular knowledge and skills that are required by industries. In order to create a new paradigm in the product development process, knowledge embedded inside individual cognitive play an important role in the achievement of competencies in Three Dimensional Computer Aided Design modeling system. Contextual knowledge is one of the basic knowledge involved in the individual cognitive development and it has been identified as one of the key capabilities for engineering students. This paper presents a review of literature on the perspectives of fundamental contextual knowledge from different disciplines and its applicability in Three Dimensional Computer Aided Design modeling. The related perspectives then will be used to guide the researcher to propose a new framework of contextual knowledge in Three Dimensional Computer Aided Design modeling. The findings of this study may enhance the understanding of the conceptual framework and essential contextual knowledge elements in Three Dimensional Computer Aided Design modeling systems. This paper helps inform the engineering education community about the presence of contextual knowledge in the Three Dimensional Computer Aided Design modeling in order to assist students to become a capable engineer.

During the transition to professional universities, it is normal that students bring preconceptions with them from many domains of knowledge as well as misconceptions and numerous other idiosyncrasies based on their previous learning experiences. Knowing how our students think will help us to understand their mathematical thinking skills, to make sense of their errors and to improve our instruction as a result. In this paper, we assert that even good students struggled as they encounter prior mathematical ideas and concepts in a new setting and faced various inhibitions in invoking their thinking powers. A study is carried out among fresh engineering undergraduates taking the first engineering mathematics course. They were assigned to do some tasks designed to make their thinking explicit, uncovering their conceptual appreciation and understanding of the basic concept of functions as they work collectively in class before the instruction on the course began. Their knowledge and thinking being observed in several aspects, namely their performance, awareness, mathematical sense making, and attitudes. The findings of this research revealed that the students' preconceptions are inconsistent;illuminating their current understandings about the concepts they have learned previously;what they attended to and how they attended these in a mathematical manner are of concern. Understanding the human innate abilities, knowing the students' current knowledge state and their prior experiences in 'functions' informed us that even with high achievers, initiatives for conceptual accommodation to assimilate new concepts into existing knowledge are required.

Acquisition of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is essential for mechanical engineering students as Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) may not adequately prepare them for their innovative and flexible role as future engineers. HOTS require the ability to apply knowledge and skills they have learned. Most of the students find it a difficult and complex cognitive task. UG programme in mechanical engg. is typically a theory based model with limited exposure to real world problems. Project Based learning is a teaching method in which student's gains knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to solve complex and real time problems. In this paper, we describe the design, implementation and evaluate the usability of an Automobile Project Implementation Template (APIT) for PBL approach. APIT is an instructional design template. The objective of the designing APIT was to assist a faculty advisor in implementing PBL for design and manufacture of an automobile. Our study reports the usability of APIT for novice faculty in mechanical engg. Also the findings for migrations form LOTS to HOTS for automobile PBL using APIT for (N=25). It reveals that APIT allowed the faculty advisor to conduct the design and manufacture of an automobile in stage wise manner and also evaluate the students learning in a systematic manner for all levels of blooms taxonomy mapping the migrations from LOTS to HOTS. Analysis showed 24% students in LOTS phase from medium strata Starburst to high strata in HOTS phase while 76% remained Aligned to medium strata. 90 % of the novice faculty felt APIT will be useful for them in planning an automobile project using PBL. The automobile PBL activity implemented using APIT has revealed high levels of student's engagement.

engineering education impacts very much in the country development in various facets like productivity, services and skilled personnel. It is the engineering institutes responsibility to provide the interactive environment for the all-round development of the students. The students who joins for the engineering education would be differed in their attitudes, back ground knowledge, intellectual levels, learning approaches. To improve the students learning capabilities and in turn make them more employable it is necessary to consider the individual properties of students in choosing the type of instruction and teaching methods. To develop the creative and critical thinking skill of students it is necessary to make them to participate in social and working environments. To facilitate the students with different learning approaches, curriculum is to be reviewed and redesigned. In this paper we reviewed four different learning models and we proposed a new integrated learning model which integrates five learning approaches.

This study identified the pedagogical and andragogical learning orientations preferred by non-major Computer Science students in one of the higher education institutions in Malaysia. The pedagogical and andragogical learning orientation model differs in six assumptions about learners, which are: the learner's need to know, self-concept, existing experience, readiness to learn, orientation to learning, and motivation [1]. Questionnaires were developed and distributed among 262 undergraduate students in non-major Computer Science Faculty who took the Introduction to Programming Language course. Descriptive analyses have also been conducted (alpha 0.958), and the results showed that a majority of the sample in this study (246 respondents or 93.9%) stay under Stage 2 in the four stages of learning development. This means that the respondents had a high preference for pedagogical as well as andragogical learning orientations. Data collected shows that non-major Computer Science students in the age range of 18 to 24 are able to work independently since their self-concept had progressed to the self-directed learning phase. However, they still need guidance from their lecturers. These findings were used to develop a prototype of an individualized online learning environment based on the pedagogy and andragogy as its foundational model. Learners in Stage 2 need goal-setting, learning strategies, and evaluation to be set by the teacher. The online learning environment allowed the student to explore her learning modules from easy to hard levels. However, students were allowed to continue to the next module even though their performance was not yet at the passing level. This is based on andragogical theory;that they are dependent learners with a moderate level of self-directedness. Additional learning materials were also provided that could be freely explored by learners at their own pace. It is based on questionnaires and interviews with students and staff in a post-1992 university, on a final-year module in analogue electronics. Both staff and students highlight the importance of coherence, continuity and connectedness in teaching and learning over the course of the degree.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the approach undertaken for a number of years at two different universities, by the use of continuous assessment, to require as well as to encourage student motivation and improve learning throughout the units. The additional aim was to improve attendance that normally leads to better results for the students, which was achieved, at least partially, on the three study units considered in this paper. There is a need also to reduce the "strain" on the students as they approach the period of the majority of multiple assessments, often all at the end of the semester or the year, each of these being critical to the students passing the particular units.
