In this paper we first point out that the result of reductions of soft sets in [P.K. Maji et al., 2002] is incorrect and the definition of reduct-soft-set in [P.K. Maji et al., 2002] is not reasonable which can be illustrated by an example. Then we propose a reasonable definition of parameterization reduction of soft sets by employing the idea of knowledge reduction in rough set theory. At the end of this paper we improve the application of soft sets in a decision making problem as mentioned in [P.K. Maji et al., 2002].

In this paper, a novel method for palmprint recognition is proposed. In this method, each pixel of a palmprint image is considered as a coordinate in a high-dimensional image space. A linear projection based on Fisher's linear discriminant (FLD) is used to project palmprints from this high-dimensional space to a significantly lower dimensional feature space, in which the ratio of the determinant of the between-class scatter to that of the within-class scatter is maximized. High accuracies of 99% and 99.2% have been obtained in one-to-one matching and one-to-300 matching test respectively and the speed of this method is rapid enough for real-time palmprint recognition.

Terminal-pair (node-pair) reliability is the probability that at least one path exists between a specified pair of nodes in a network. The NPR/T (node-pair reliability-Torrieri) method is used to compensate for unreliable nodes in network reliability computations. This method transforms the original undirected network into a directed network wherein each undirected link is replaced by two directed anti-parallel links. However, such transformation generates s-dependent events in reliability computation and yields incorrect results for some undirected networks. A modified combined method that evaluates reliability in a network with unreliable nodes is proposed in this paper. The proposed method solves the problem caused by the NPR/T method.

Negotiation support system has become increasingly important since the advent of electronic commerce. But the existing NSS cannot conveniently, timely and effectively help negotiators make decisions in the real-time bargaining. Since immune algorithms have the advantages of converging global search space fast, intrinsic parallelism and resolving the optimization problems with simulating the immune system, in this paper we attempt to apply artificial immune algorithm to providing solution supporting in the electronic commerce oriented NSS in order to offer optimal or near-optimal solutions for negotiators. We verify the feasibility and special superiority of this method through theory analysis and experiments.

Distributed control system (DCS) has been widely employed in power plants to control and monitor field instruments of plants. The compatibility and a high speed communication between DCS and the existing computer systems such as remote terminal unit (RTU) and management information system (MIS) are problems when employing a DCS. In order to realize a direct communication between computers of RTU and DCS, the structure of the WDPF type DCS made by the Westinghouse Company of American is analyzed in detail in this paper. By analyzing its inner agreement on communication, a port between the WDPF type DCS and the computers of RTU is designed, which includes the hardware layout and correlative software disposal.

One of the main aims of TREC (text retrieval conference) Web track has been to answer the question if link-based methods are better than keyword-based methods for Web search, but most of the participations including us find that the hyperlink structure cannot improve search effectiveness as some commercial search engine claimed. This paper tries to find the reason by investigating the WT10G, the .GOV dataset, the answer-sets and the TREC evaluation measure. We propose our assumption about the link-based methods and prove its correction in these two datasets. How to get a better result by the link-based methods was found in TREC datasets by some experiments. Some suggestions for the TREC datasets collection and evaluation measure are also given this paper.

There are two ways by which the research on automatic summarization is carried out. One is based on statistics, and the other is based on message understanding. The former has nothing to do with domain, but its accuracy is lower. On the contrary, the latter depends on domain, but its accuracy is higher. In this paper, an algorithm, which summarizes a document by extracting subtopics from the sentences, is based on statistics and partially understanding message, in order to get better summarization and get rid of the dependence on domain. Besides, since it is difficult to determine the length of a summary manually, the algorithm also strives to obtain a better summary with proper length. To this end, a new module of mutual dependence is put forward too and applied to segmentation, which can select accuracy features for the summarizing algorithm. And then new rules are brought forward to evaluate sentences for the summarizing algorithm. Furthermore, a new task based algorithm to evaluating summarization is impersonally offered.

Distributed heterogeneous integrates asset of autonomous database systems to provide global database functions. The client/server-based distributed heterogeneous database system has a limited concurrency and scalability. In this paper, we proposed a new distributed heterogeneous database system model based on intelligent agent approach. In this model, we implement the functions of the system using agent approach. We defined several agents, such as, UIagent, Transagent, GIagent, parti-agent, coord-agent, etc. We discussed the transaction processing process and discussed the ACID properties of the transaction. This model can farthest develop the concurrency of the transaction and it is suitable for the large scale distributed heterogeneous database system.

In mobile database, in order to reduce the contention of limited network bandwidth by mobile computers and improve availability of local data, frequently, and used data are cached locally. How to effectively maintain cache consistency is a hot research topic. In this paper, we propose strategies to maintain cache data consistency, which are, based on updating frequency of data items, to broadcast dynamically using variant period, to broadcast updating messages instead of invalidation messages, to use substitution strategy based on semantically cached data units, to maintain cache consistent based on historical report after mobile computer reconnects. Finally we analyze performance of the strategies.

The discovery of frequent itemsets is a very computational and I/O intensive task, and beyond a certain database size, it is crucial to leverage and the combined computational power of multiple processors for fast response and scalability. In this paper we present new scalable algorithm for maximal frequent itemset mining. It decomposes the search space by prefix-based equivalence classes, distributes work among the processors and selectively duplicates databases in such a way that each processor can compute the maximal frequent itemsets independently. It utilizes multiple level backtrack pruning strategy, along with vertical database format, counting frequency by simple tid-list intersection operation. These techniques eliminate the need for synchronization, drastically cutting down the communication cost. The analysis and experimental results demonstrate that our approach is well scalable in speedup and sizeup.
