This paper proposes a distributed fault detection and diagnosis method based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in a whole plant monitoring scheme. The method is based on the decomposition of the plant into multiple blocks using plant topology. A local PCA based fault detection method is applied in each block and the results are sent to the central node to fuse the information and to detect and diagnose faults in the global plant. This method is compared with the centralized PCA method and some distributed principal component analysis (DPCA) methods in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The objective is to check which of the distributed methods implemented is the best one in terms of detecting faults and minimizing the communication cost between the blocks. Empirical results on the WWTP show that the DPCA method based on local models has very good results.

The optimal control problem with stopping for a discrete time linear stochastic system is investigated in this paper. Sometimes, in order to optimally realise the aim we need to know how long the system will be controlled. The traditional solutions with fixed terminal time are not enough to control the system optimally. The general aim of optimal control and stopping consists in minimization of a composite cost function. The paper presents two methods of solving this problem. A numerical example is included to illustrate the optimal control with stopping.

This paper presents a new theoretical control approach for the feedback stabilization of a class of mechanical systems with impulse effects that is based on using Lyapunov conditions of asymptotic stability as kinematic affine constraints [8] where the corresponding constraint force is the control force. We prove that the condition of existence and uniqueness lead to a system of partial differential equations whose solution is the required Lyapunov function, as a result we apply this approach to design a controller to stabilize limit cycles of a compass-gait biped.

This article introduces automatic speech recognition based on Electro-Magnetic Articulography (EMA). Movements of the tongue, lips, and jaw are tracked by an EMA device, which are used as features to create Hidden Markov models (HMM) and recognize speech only from articulation, that is, without any audio information. Also, automatic phoneme recognition experiments are conducted to examine the contribution of the EMA parameters to robust speech recognition. Using feature fusion, multistream HMM fusion, and late fusion methods, noisy audio speech has been integrated with EMA speech and recognition experiments have been conducted. The achieved results show that the integration of the EMA parameters significantly increases an audio speech recognizer's accuracy, in noisy environments.

Modelling and simulating manufacturing systems often involves several different organisational units. This can make data collection difficult and it can be hard to obtain data that allows for the model to be built with a consistent level of detail. To investigate the impact of a varying level of detail, a manufacturing system was modelled using different levels of detail. The first model was modelled at a high level of detail containing all elements in the system. The second model was an aggregation of some of the processes in the system and the third model consisted only of the main processes. The experiments performed with the models, aimed at finding differences between models' outputs that originated from the choice of the level of detail. The results show that there are significant differences between the models. The simulation models used for this paper are made in collaboration with a company in the mobile communications industry and deals with supply chain problems. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.
