Using tools and techniques from Riemannian geometry, we develop a novel distributed algorithm for optimizing the input signal distribution (and, in particular, its covariance matrix) in Gaussian multiple-input, multiple-output multiple access channels. To account for the problem's semidefiniteness constraints, we endow the space of positive-definitie matrices with a non-Euclidean spectral metric which becomes singular when the signal spectrum itself becomes singular. Quite remarkably, viewing the unit simplex as a subspace of the space of semidefinite matrices (corresponding to diagonal ones), we show that this metric generalizes the well-known Shahshahani metric on the simplex and extends the replicator dynamics of evolutionary game theory;in fact, gradient ascent trajectories defined with respect to this metric are shown to be equivalent to a Gibbs-based exponential learning process. In this way, we show that the resulting optimization algorithm converges to the optimum signal distribution exponentially fast: users attain an epsilon-neighborhood of the system's optimum configuration in time which is at most O(log(1/epsilon)) (and, in practice, within only a few iterations, even for large numbers of users).

We are interested in this paper by the competition between MNO and MVNO on a population of heterogeneous customers, with different perceptions of operators offer. The MVNO buys resources from MNO at the wholesale price and offers an added value supposed to be better and at a lower price compared to the incumbent operator. In such a scenario, the rational customer behavior is to choose the virtual operator offer. However, we consider that the market is segmented into two different populations: the first segment is defined by customers attracted by the brand appeal of the MNO as the incumbent operator and the second segment of customers more sensitive to the added value proposed by the MVNO. Thus, the choice of customers will rather depend on their preferences and retail operators offers. We model this problem considering game theory tools and we distinguish three possible situations depending on customers' preferences. For each situation, we calculate the market share of each of the operators and the Nash equilibrium given by the MNO's wholesale price and the MVNO's margin.

Route selection is one of the key problems to be treated in telecommunication management and control. We are interested in finding the routes which are balanced from the congestion or cost point of view. The 'classical' load balancing concerns an entire route, from its source node to its destination, which is selected according to its cost. This approach requires therefore the analysis of all existing routes whose number in a graph is exponential in function of the network size. This phenomenon makes a game on path level (macroscopic level) unrealistic. Our goal is to propose an algorithm which can find Nash equilibria by examining a polynomial number of graph network elements. Our main idea consists in choosing an outgoing arc in each node in exception of the destination (microscopic level) instead of an entire path. We achive this by proposing a distributed algorithm which performs this selection in network nodes. We provide the analysis which proves that our algorithm converges weakly to Nash equilibria. The computation results are encouraging to continue the purely numerical work on the algorithm implementation.

Most techniques designed for the multi-input single-output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC) require accurate current channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). A different approach has been proposed by Maddah-Ali and Tse (MAT), in which significant increase of the multiplexing gain can be obtained by solely relying on perfect but outdated CSIT. This approach is proven to yield the optimal multiplexing gain when the curent channel state is completely independent of the fed back channel state. Recent work focused on an intermediate case: channels exhibiting some temporal correlation, or equivalently in the block fading model, feedback delays being smaller than the coherence time. We propose modified versions of different schemes for the MISO BC with delayed CSIT in which the number of users to serve is optimized in order to maximize the multiplexing gain when accounting for (CSI acquisition) overhead. Indeed, as the coherence time decreases, CSI acquisition overhead starts to dominate and a reduced number of active users (and hence active Base Station antennas) leads to a better compromise. We consider the MAT scheme, the traditional Zero Forcing (ZF) beamforming scheme, and combinations such as MAT-ZF and TDMA-ZF. © 2012 Univ of Avignon.

Welcome to netgcoop 2012, the 6th international conference on network games, control and optimization, held this year in the beautiful medieval city of Avignon, during November 28–30, 2012. netgcoop has returned to Avignon, five years after the first conference took place there. The conference thus comes back to its geographical roots, with a slight change in the name from NetCoop to netgcoop reflecting the ever growing importance of game theoretic principles and tools for understanding the interaction among elements in many networking domains, including communication, computer, social and transportation networks. Nowadays, 802.11 networks have been deployed in a scale similar to that of Ethernet networks in the 90's. Devices willing to connect to a single access point should discover it before attempting a connection. The discovery process has been proved to be highest delay sub-process during the initial discovery or a handover for seamless connectivity. In this article we present a detailed description of the scanning process in a Linux kernel, and analyze metrics of two different scenarios to characterize spontaneous deployments.

We consider a problem where several agents need to achieve a common control objective. The motivation for this problem is control of power generation in a wind farm under weak-grid conditions, with the individual turbine-generators acting as agents. The control objective is a nonlinear function of the state of the agents. Furthermore, this nonlinear function depends on the parameters of the network connecting the agents, and these parameters are unknown. Based on a newly developed nonlinear adaptive control methodology, a process is designed that simultaneously learns the network parameters and, using individual controllers, drives the agents to their respective steady-state solutions. We also compare the performance of this design to an empirical control design that requires less communication.

This paper considers a model for the optimal dynamic energy management in a wireless sensor network (WSN) with M homogeneous sensors tracking N ≥ M heterogeneous targets. The WSN feeds on a limited, shared energy pool provided by an energy-harvesting station. Sensors can be operated in multiple modes, subject to a peak global energy consumption constraint. An approach is developed to construct a tractable heuristic scheduling policy based on marginal productivity indices (MPIs) defined separately for each target. Sufficient conditions are given which ensure both the existence of such an index and point towards an approach for its evaluation.

We consider a communication system in which two sources communicate with a destination with the help of a common relay. We assume that the relay operates in half-duplex mode; and concentrate on the symmetric-rate case. We study and analyse the performance of a simple strategy in which the relay simply amplifies its output and retransmits it. However, unlike standard amplify-and-forward, the destination recovers the sent messages by computing and inverting two appropriate linear combinations of the sources' messages, obtained using what it gets from the sources and the relay. We discuss the design criteria and establish the sum-rate allowed by this strategy. Also, we consider, and solve, the problem of maximizing the sum-rate by properly optimizing the power values and the integer-valued coefficients of the recovered linear combinations. It should be emphasized that although the coding strategy described in this paper performs only as good as standard amplify-and-forward, it has the advantage of utilizing simpler linear codes; and, so, is more relevant in practical collaborative systems.

We consider two transmitter-receiver pairs (links) operating on protected and shared frequency bands. Each link has a frequency band to use exclusively without any interference from the other link. A frequency band is shared between the two links. We study the power allocation problem of the two transmitters in the available bands using models from microeconomic theory. We model the setting as a competitive market in which the links are the consumers and transmission power are goods which can be bought by the consumers at specific prices. We assume there exists an authority, the arbitrator, which determines the prices of the goods and forwards them to the consumers. The Walrasian equilibrium in this model is Pareto optimal and corresponds to the prices that equate the demand to the supply of goods. We show that the Walrasian equilibrium always exists in our setting. We provide sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the Walrasian equilibrium and also for the global stability of the price adjustment process to reach the equilibrium.
