Hand gesture is one of a powerful means of communication among human. Sign language is an essential and natural expressive mean of communication especially for the deaf people. The article proposes a technique for the recognition of Lao alphabet sign language. The technique of image processing, that is Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), is applied in order to extract characteristics of the hand images performing individual alphabet of Lao sign language. The extracted features are then sent to the template matching process. The similarity between the extracted features and the prototype features are measured by using correlation technique. The totals of 54 Lao alphabets are used in the experiments. Four subjects are asked to perform each alphabet of Lao sign language in which each subject had performed totally 540 gestures. The recognition rate of the proposed technique at about 79 % is achieved.

The researches in the area of search engines and semantic search are mostly concentrated on data storage and further analysis. The majority of search engines use the huge amounts of previously accumulated user requests for predicting the search output without taking in attention this user intention by qualitative processing the request. In this paper we explore the idea of usage the semantic cognitive spaces for extracting the exact user intentions by analysis the naturallanguage input requests. Detecting and countering potential terrorist threats requires a synergistic conjunction of intelligent technologies. The paper describes an Intelligent Universal Situation Awareness (USA) System and in particular discusses a naturallanguage front-end interface that is designed to reduce the impedance mismatch between the human and the machine. The effective translation of naturallanguage semantics is critically dependent on an accelerated capability for learning. Hence, a conversational naturallanguage is mapped onto a set of procedures, which effect directed mining and linking operations on a relational database. These procedures are written in a very high-level extensible language (VHLL), which serves to facilitate knowledge expression and maintenance operations. The VHLL is underpinned by expert compiler technology. Objects for directed mining and linking are invoked as rule consequents in a blackboard architecture. Using information hiding, objects can be visually displayed in the form of a tree to facilitate acquisition and maintenance operations. Finally, projected and restricted database views can be analyzed by a distinct high-level knowledge base to generate naturallanguage reports. Most importantly, these reports provide the analyst with immediate feedback, which serves to catalyze the generation of subsequent queries.

This paper presents results of an experiment in which we used machine learning (ML) techniques to classify sentences in Dutch legislation. These results are compared to the results of a pattern-based classifier. Overall, the ML classifier performs as accurate (>90%) as the pattern based one, but seems to generalize worse to new laws. Given these results, the pattern based approach is to be preferred since its reasons for classification are clear and can be used for further modelling of the content of the sentences.
