As the volume of data generated is growing at an unprecedented rate, it becomes important to analyze this data in real-time. To handle the huge volume of data streaming at a high velocity, we not only require powerful machines but also means to distribute the computation involved on the multiple machines. There are several open-source distributed stream processing frameworks such as Apache {Storm, Flink, Spark} and Confluent Kafka for building real-time machine learning applications. Prior works benchmarked some of these platforms using low-level operations like filters, joins, windowed computations etc. Our work includes benchmarking these popular frameworks for their applicability to classical machine learning models: Online K-Means, Online Linear Regression and Online Logistic Regression. We study the following quantitative metrics of evaluation: throughput, latency, CPU, and memory usage. The experiments were conducted in both standalone and clusters setups to determine the scalability of the models. This study will help system designers choose the right model and the right framework, given a specific configuration on streaming data. © 2020 IEEE.

Data analytics, also referred to as big data, is a technique for analyzing massive amounts of information in both organized and unstructured forms in order to uncover relevant patterns and trends. It is necessary to design a proper framework for the use of sensitive data, as well as assurances that sensitive data will not be breached or altered, in order to protect big data privacy. Consequently, because big da-ta systems are substantially larger in terms of both scale and velocity than regular big data systems, the privacy rules for traditional database systems do not apply to big data systems, and vice versa. The delivery of new models and algorithms to large-scale data repositories that handle developing distributed contexts such as clouds, social networks, and other similar environments is essential for data privacy preservation and data security in big data environments. The current research is aimed towards achieving this goal. As a result of the usage of data for data analysis, businesses must develop a data-sharing plan that ensures data security while also protecting individual privacy. Data sharing governance is the term used to describe this process. Because of this research, the Chain-PPDM architecture for privacy-preserving massive data sets, which makes use of block chain technology and the Inter Planetary File System, has been developed and is now in use (IPFS). For the purpose of better understanding ChainPPDM, this research adopts a data mining scenario in which a large number of people are participating in examining and detecting patterns from vast volumes of data. We used data from healthcare organizations and online food delivery firms to test and validate our method.

Data-parallelism has become an established paradigm to train DNNs that lit inside GPU memory on large-scale HPC systems. However, model-parallelism is required to train out-of-core DNNs. In this paper, we deal with emerging requirements brought forward by very large DNNs being trained using high-resolution images common in digital pathology. To address these, we propose, design, and implement GEMS;a GPU-Enabled Memory-Aware Model-Parallelism System. We present several design schemes like GEMS-MAST, GEMS-MASTER, and GEMS-Hybrid that offer excellent speedups over state-of-the-art systems like Mesh-TensorFlow and FlexFlow. Furthermore, we combine model-parallelism and data-parallelism to train a 1000-layer ResNet-lk model using 1,024 Volta V100 *** with 97.32% scaling-efficiency. For the real-world histopathology whole-slide-image (WSI) of 100,000 x 100,000 pixels, we train custom ResNet-110-v2 on image tiles of size 1024 x 1024 and reduce the training time from seven hours to 28 minutes.

Recently, software-defined Industrial Internet of Things (SDIIoT), the integration of software-defined networking (SDN) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), has emerged. It is perceived as an effective way to manage IIoT dynamically. Aiming to improve scalability and flexibility of SDIIoT, multi-SDN has been applied to form a physically distributed control plane to handle the large amount of data generated by industrial devices. However, as the core of multi-SDN, reaching consensus among multiple SDN controllers is a thorny issue. To meet the required design principle, this paper proposes a blockchain-enabled distributed architecture with SDIIoT to synchronize local views between distinct SDN controllers and finally reach the consensus of global view. On the other hand, both the cryptographic operations of blockchain and the non-cryptographic computational tasks have access to the same computational resource pool of mobile edge cloud (MEC). In order to simultaneously optimize the throughput of blockchain and the energy consumption caused by computing, we adaptively allocate computational resources and the block size by jointly considering the trust features of SDN controllers and the resource requirements of non-cryptographic operations. To implement the truly distributed manner of blockchain, we describe our problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) and propose a novel deep recurrent Q-network (DRQN) approach to solve it. In the simulation results, we compare two different protocols of blockchain and show the effectiveness of our scheme in either of them.

With rapid increase in the number of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in the electric grid, massive volumes of monitoring data are expected to overwhelm the data preprocessors at centralized computing facilities. This, along with the requirements of lower latency and increased resilience to data anomalies advocates for distributed architectures for data conditioning and processing. To that end, in this paper, we present a fog-computing-based hierarchical approach for distributed detection and correction of anomalies in PMU data. In our proposed approach, each fog node, responsible for real-time data preprocessing, is dynamically assigned a smaller group of PMU signals with similar modal observabilities using software-defined-networking (SDN). The SDN controller residing at a central node feeds on the modeshapes estimated from the signals recovered at each fog node, for running the PMU-grouping algorithm. Grouping ensures adequate denseness of each signal set and guarantees data recovery under corruption. Also, the grouping is soft-real-time, infrequent, and triggered only upon a change in operating condition and therefore, heavily relieves the computational burden off the central node. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated using simulated data from the IEEE 5-area 16-machine test system.

With the full arrival of the digital era, fueled by both information technology and business marketing, rumors are produced and spread endlessly on social networks. During the recent novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, online rumors have continued to flourish. Most existing studies on traditional rumor detection rely on a large number of features in practical applications. However, the current severe epidemic scenarios have limited rumor information features, and it remains a challenging problem to detect epidemic rumors with high accuracy using only limited information. As a result, we propose a novel Few-shot Rumor Detection model (FRD) for the novel coronavirus pneumonia, which is combined with meta-learning to be able to accurately identify rumors as soon as possible in crises. Specifically, we started by using the BERT+BiLSTM combination for rumor text feature extraction and representation to generate the historical rumor sample-wise vector and epidemic rumor sample-wise vector; secondly, the prototypical network was introduced to summarize the historical rumor data, and the feature vectors of samples belonging to the same category were averaged to obtain the prototype representation of historical rumor category; finally, we utilize the modified cosine similarity measure function to calculate the distance between the class-wise vector of historical rumor text and the sample-wise vector of epidemic rumor, and complete the rumor detection according to the nearest neighbor method. Our experimental results on English datasets show that the FRD rumor detection model proposed in this paper is superior to other baseline algorithms in terms of accuracy, precision, recall and macro F1 value. From the comparison of experimental results, the FRD model can effectively improve conventional rumor detection methods, and better realize the early detection of sudden epidemic rumors.

Information-Centric networking (ICN) has been widely regarded as a new, promising networking paradigm for smart grids. Accordingly, content security becomes the most critical security goal, because the content is now decoupled from its location in ICN. As existing security approaches are mainly designed for traditional IP-based smart grids, how to achieve content security in ICN-based smart grid remains unexplored. In this work, we first propose a two-layer ICN architecture to move from host-centric communication to receiver-driven data retrieval. Then, we design a pseudo-identity signcryption scheme based on receiver-driven communication patterns to achieve mutual authentication and various other security goals, assuring content security in an ICN-based smart grid. Experiments and comparison results show the superiority of our proposed scheme.

Neutron flux distribution inside the core of large size nuclear reactors is a function of space and time. An online Flux Mapping System (FMS) is needed to monitor the core during the reactor operation. FMS estimates the core flux distribution from the measurements of few in-core detectors using an appropriate algorithm. Here, a distributed Artificial Neural Network (D-ANN) model is developed using parallel-forward multi-layer perceptron architecture to capture the spatial core flux variation in a nuclear reactor. The proposed D-ANN model is tested with simulated test case data of Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR) for multiple operating conditions of the reactor. The model estimates the neutron flux in all horizontal mesh locations (2-D) from the multiple networks distributed spatially across AHWR core. Estimation error using the proposed D-ANN model is found to be significantly lower than that with lumped ANN model. Validation exercises establish that this D-ANN model could effectively capture the spatial variations in the reactor core and therefore could be utilized for efficient flux mapping. The real time implementation of D-ANN based flux mapping method is also proposed. © 2020 IEEE.

Traditionally, I/O systems have been developed within the confines of a centralized OS kernel. This led to monolithic and rigid storage systems that are limited by low development speed, expressiveness, and performance. Various assumptions are imposed including reliance on the UNIX-file abstraction, the POSIX standard, and a narrow set of I/O policies. However, this monolithic design philosophy makes it difficult to develop and deploy new I/O approaches to satisfy the rapidly-evolving I/O requirements of modern scientific applications. To this end, we propose LabStor: a modular and extensible platform for developing high-performance, customized I/O stacks. Single-purpose I/O modules (e.g, I/O schedulers) can be developed in the comfort of userspace and released as plug-ins, while end-users can compose these modules to form workload- and hardware-specific I/O stacks. Evaluations show that by switching to a fully modular design, tailored I/O stacks can yield performance improvements of up to 60% in various applications.
