The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based data transmission is highlighted for next-generation communication system by both academia and industry. The UAV, which is dynamically associated with mobile users, can take a role of base station (BS) as service provider (SP), for various types of scenarios. For this sake, it is important that the UAV-BS should be hovered in the air with obeying optimal trajectory for minimizing delay, which is caused by enormous computation of data transmission, and the trajectory can be controlled by centralized macro base station (MBS). In this paper, we propose deep reinforcement learning approach for computing optimal trajectories of distributed UAV-BS with low-latency overhead to enable efficient UAV communication in next generation wireless system.

Blockchain is an immutable database which is decentralized and distributed. This blockchain is shared by all the nodes in the network and every node has the same state. The transactions in this open distributed ledger are verified and confirmed with the help of consensus algorithms. The transactions, once executed and entered, can never be changed or erased. Bitcoin, the first usecase of blockchain, as a digital money, is based on Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus protocol. PoW has worked tremendously well and can be useful for many industries. The opportunities are high in this innovative technology, and evolution in this area is just a beginning. This paper has described blockchain technology, the underlying concepts of blockchain and the implementation of Proof-of-Work consensus algorithm along with its performance analysis.

In the era of cloud computing and big data analysis, how to efficiently share and utilize medical information scattered across various care providers has become a critical problem. This paper proposes a new framework for sharing medical data in a secure and privacy-preserving way. This framework holistically integrates multi-authority attribute based encryption, blockchain and smart contract, as well as software defined networking to define and enforce sharing policies. Specifically in our framework, patients' medical records are encrypted and stored in hospital databases, where strict access controls are enforced with attribute based encryption coupled with privacy level classification. Our framework leverages blockchain technology to connect scattered private databases from participating hospitals for efficient and secure data provision, smart contracts to enable the business logic of clinical data usage, and software defined networking to revoke sharing privileges. The performance evaluation of our prototype demonstrates that the associated computation costs are reasonable in practice.

With the number of IoT devices expected to exceed 50 billion in 2023, edge and fog computing paradigms are beginning to attract attention as a way to process the massive amounts of raw data being generated. However, these paradigms do not consider the processing capabilities of the existing commodity IoT devices in the wild. In order to solve this challenge, we are developing a new middleware platform called IFoT, which processes various sensor data while considering Quality of Service (QoS) by utilizing the computational resources of heterogeneous IoT devices within an area. This allows smart services to be created and processed in parallel by various IoT devices. In this paper, we show the effectiveness of the IFoT based approach of constructing services. We designed and implemented a workspace context recognition service, utilizing environmental sensor data processed in a distributed manner according to the IFoT framework. We evaluate the QoS of IFoT middle-ware and its feasibility when used on commodity devices such as the Raspberry Pi, through the service.

Software systems are often built by composing services distributed over the network. Choreographies are a form of decentralized composition that models the external interaction of the services by specifying peer-to-peer message exchanges from a global perspective. When third-party services are involved, usually black-box services to be reused, actually realizing choreographies calls for exogenous coordination of their interaction. Nowadays, very few approaches address the problem of actually realizing choreographies in an automatic way. These approaches are rather static and are poorly suited to the need of tactical domains, which are highly-dynamic networking environments that bring together services and sensors over military radio networks. In this paper, we describe a method to employ service choreographies in tactical environments, and apply it to a case study in the military domain. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this paper, we investigate the impact of network load on the Direct Acyclic Graph (DAG) consensus process for the blockchain enabled Internet of Things. Specifically, Markov chain model has been adopted to illustrate the dynamics in the consensus process for DAG based blockchain networks. The key performance metrics including cumulative weight and transaction confirmation delay are analysed under the unsteady state caused by the fluctuation of transaction arrival rate. The analysis is based on one of the most typical DAGs, Tangle, and the results show that the performance will be affected when the transaction arrival rate fluctuates widely.

Longer range, in rural/urban IoT networks, allow a large geographical coverage with only a few base-stations, making their deployment and operation economical. In this paper we explore the 150-174 MHz spectrum for long range IoT networks comprising unlicensed MURS and licensed VHF narrowbands. Range in these bands is boosted by the lower RF frequencies as well as higher transmit powers allowed by the FCC. Through a 400 sq km wide area deployment study, we show that, these spectrum bands can provide > 20x the geographical coverage than that in the 900 MHz ISM band LoRa. Increased range translates to greater uplink IoT device traffic. The key contribution of this paper is a novel technique - Blind distributed MU-MIMO, that allows capacity to scale with the number of antennas (base-stations) while not requiring any coordinated channel measurements between the devices and IoT base-stations. This requirement is crucial since in IoT networks power constrained IoT devices typically sleep and wake up to transmit short messages in response to unpredictable events without any coordination with the base-stations. We demonstrate the efficacy of Blind distributed MU-MIMO through a real wide area deployment.

In the past years, trust management systems have been proven suitable for solving the authorization problem in distributed systems, such as peer to peer systems, social networks, cloud, mobile ad-hoc networks, and Internet of things. Trust management systems could be either managed by a central authority or decentralized. In both cases the entity or, respectively, the set of entities managing the system need to be trusted for all users. To overcome this limitation, this paper brings blockchain technology into trust management systems, proposing a novel implementation of the Role-based Trust management framework (RT) on blockchain. The approach relies on smart contracts to represent user trust networks and to infer new trust relations through the chain discovery algorithm. We evaluated a prototype implemented on Ethereum on a representative set of policies related to different scenarios.

Network emulation is an intermediate solution for supporting experimentation on new protocols and services which falls between the high fidelity of fully implemented networks and running simulation models executed. Lightweight emulation environments emulate entire networks on a single machine, thus enabling experiments that are much realistic and easy to use, at a fraction of cost and complexity when compared to real system. Scalability of a network emulation environment is very relevant when the experimentation scenario involves large amounts of networking devices, services, and protocols. In this paper we evaluate the scalability of some lightweight and distributed emulation environments. Experiments show the consumption of resources for each environment including memory, number of processes created, disk utilization, and the time required to instantiate models. Our analysis can be useful for experimenters to decide on which environment to use. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

We consider disaster situations where communication infrastructure is partially or totally destroyed. We explore alternatives for enabling fast and efficient service discovery and querying which allow rescuers get access to information produced by available various things such health sensors, wireless cameras, smartwatches and any other relevant devices or sensors helping in the rescue operation. We propose to make use of available users’ smartphones for efficiently relaying discovery/querying messages. We make use of LTE Device-to-Device Proximity Services (LTE D2D ProSe) technology to build a distributed D2D broadcast backbone which allows efficient and robust message dissemination avoiding transmission redundancy and resulting in higher energy savings while achieving high coverage. Our solution, Efficient D2D Broadcast (ED2DB) has been implemented on NS-3 by extending the LTE D2D ProSe module provided by NIST. Obtained results show that significant improvements in terms of energy consumption, end-to-end delay, and packet delivery ratio can be obtained by using ED2DB with LTE D2D ProSe over other technologies such as WiFi. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
