The purpose of distributed generation in improving voltage profile, abating losses, slashing fuel cost and boosting efficiency is becoming important in modern power system operation. This paper summarizes an unconventional optimization technique based on the elephant herd optimization for distributed generation integration in the power system which is inspired by the herding behavior of elephant group. This article elaborates a multi objective optimization problem considering two objectives to reduce the total real power losses of the system and to minimize the overall voltage deviation by placing the distributed generation at suitable location. The objectives are collaborated into a scalar objective optimization problem by using weighted sum method. The proposed elephant herd optimization based methodology is compared with the particle swarm optimization approach for IEEE 14 bus system. The comparative results relating to voltage profile, real power losses and convergence characteristics indicate the superiority of elephant herd optimization over the particle swarm optimization.

Now a days distributed systems are backbone of majority of the networked applications. It has multiple entities working collaboratively. This collaboration needs to be coordinated by an entity among the member entities. The selection of such coordinator entity is critical in distributed systems. The process of coordinator selection is to be performed by member entities. This is termed as coordinator election in distributed systems. Member nodes need to communicate for electing the coordinator entity. The communication over a network makes the process of coordinator election vulnerable to faults, failures and security attacks. These vulnerabilities may lead to the threats like deletion or modification of election data and fake voting. As a result of the same the election algorithm may not terminate or the wrong entity may be elected as coordinator. Hence it is important to discover such vulnerabilities and threats. Existing coordinator election algorithms sparsely address the vulnerabilities. In this work, the vulnerabilities of the coordinator election algorithm are identified and a taxonomy for the same is proposed. The solution approaches for dealing with these vulnerabilities are discussed.

The idea of leveraging Software Defined networking (SDN) in vehicular networks has drawn a lot of attention in the last years. SDN flexibility and programmability brought promising solutions for VANET challenges, namely Quality of Services (QoS) and scalability which are the main characteristics of Internet of Vehicles (IoV). Such networks are characterized by fast topological changes due to their variable dynamicity and density. In fact, SDN decouples control plane and data plane, providing programmability to configure the network. However, based on a single controller, SDN is criticized for not supporting scalability and for decreasing the overall network Quality of service. Using multiple controllers becomes the tendency of recent works to meet the need of large networks. Throughout this paper, we survey the proposed SDN-based architectures for vehicular networks. Considering the control plane impact, centralized or distributed, the QoS improvements brought by theses architectures are studied and criticized in order to derive the suitability of each proposal to resolve the IoV challenges and meet its requirements for the various applications.

The rapidly increasing number of instances and types of services, especially microservices, and the growing complexity of systems create uncertainty if the existing algorithms and solutions for such problems as service discovery or load balancing are still the case. Building a huge infrastructure for the verification purposes is often too costly and impractical in the production environment therefore it is necessary to find other ways to test architectural approaches and algorithms. One of them is simulators. For simulating very big systems like a telecommunications radio access network the simulator should have certain features: capability of simulating a huge number of services, possibility to model heterogenic and vast network, facility to add a new type of services and logic. This paper presents a concept of such a simulator of services.

National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) are digital infrastructures that are essential for innovation in higher education. More and more, it seems obvious to improve Quality of Research and Education through REN Services. Historically, the organization of resources in the NRENs is approached centrally with a data center shared between the universities forming the NREN. This does not reflect the reality because universities also have computing infrastructures and even some laboratories in the university could also have their own servers. In this paper, we propose a new hierarchical scheme for dynamic job execution for NREN Datacenters system. This proposal is based on a three-tier architecture, representing the three levels of a NREN: laboratory, university, NREN.

The next generation military environment requires a delay-tolerant network for sharing data and resources using an interoperable computerized, Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a new distributed SDN (Software-Defined Networks) architecture for tactical environments based on distributed cloudlets. The objective is to reduce the end-to-end delay of tactical traffic flow, and improve management capabilities, allowing flexible control and network resource allocation. The proposed SDN architecture is implemented over three layers: decentralized cloudlets layer where each cloudlet has its SDRN (Software-Defined Radio networking) controller, decentralized MEC (Mobile Edge computing) layer with an SDN controller for each MEC, and a centralized private cloud as a trusted third-part authority controlled by a centralized SDN controller. The experimental validations are done via relevant and realistic tactical scenarios based on strategic traffics loads, i.e., Tactical SMS (Short Message Service), UVs (Unmanned Vehicle) patrol deployment and high bite rate ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) video.

Eventual consistency is a popular consistency model for geo-replicated data stores. Although eventual consistency provides high performance and availability, it can cause anomalies that make programming complex for application developers. Session guarantees can remove some of these anomalies while causing much lower overhead compared with stronger consistency models. In this paper, we provide a protocol for providing session guarantees for NuKV, a key-value store developed for services with very high availability and performance requirements at eBay. NuKV relies on the Raft protocol for replication inside datacenters, and uses eventual consistency for replication among datacenters. We provide modified versions of conventional session guarantees to avoid the problem of slowdown cascades in systems with large numbers of partitions. We also use Hybrid Logical Clocks to eliminate the need for delaying write operations to satisfy session guarantees. Our experiments show that our protocol provides session guarantees with a negligible overhead when compared with eventual consistency.
