Deploying V2X services has become a challenging task. This is mainly due to the fact that such services have strict latency requirements. To meet these requirements, one potential solution is adopting mobile edge computing (MEC). However, this presents new challenges including how to find a cost efficient placement that meets other requirements such as latency. In this work, the problem of cost-optimal V2X service placement (CO-VSP) in a distributed cloud/edge environment is formulated. Additionally, a cost-focused delay-aware V2X service placement (DA-VSP) heuristic algorithm is proposed. Simulation results show that both CO-VSP model and DA-VSP algorithm guarantee the QoS requirements of all such services and illustrates the trade-off between latency and deployment cost.

Mobile Social Network (MSN), built on inter-connected mobile devices, enables the flexibility of information exchanges of individuals within a virtual community. MSN may be self-organized and/or infrastructure-less, and the communication links may frequently fluctuate. When link qualities degrade, it remains critical to maintain the connections of important social pairs when supporting all social pairs is impossible. To achieve this goal, we propose to proactively place some reliable links (e.g., satellite links or UAV links) into the underlying communication network, so as to improve the service quality of the important social pairs, referred to as the Maintaining Social Connections (MSC) problem. We formulate the MSC problem and prove it is NP-hard. As such, we first study a special case of MSC, which is submodular and solvable with high approximation-ratio. Since the general MSC problem is not submodular, we propose an efficient approximation algorithm. Specially, by carefully choosing two submodular functions to lower/upper bound the MSC problem, we are able to prove the high approximation ratio of the proposed algorithm using these selected submodular functions. We further develop evolutionary algorithms to iteratively adjust the link placement via different exploration strategies, which also yield guaranteed approximation-ratio. Extensive evaluations based on both synthetic and real-world social network traces demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is about connecting dynamically billion of devices to the Internet. This large-scale and dynamic topology is very challenging for IoT deployment and management. Software-Defined networking (SDN) has been applied more and more in recent years as a solution for IoT challenges. The SDN concept of decoupling the control plane from the data plane promotes logically centralized visibility of the entire network and enables the applications to innovate through network programmability. At the same time, there are still some open issues, such as scalability in large IoT environments that include several devices. To face scalability challenges, SDN proposes distributed controllers as a solution to decentralize the control plane while maintaining the logically centralized network view. However, SDN-based architecture, that provides the flexibility and scalability, still lacks the smart or intelligent management to self-adapt to possible dynamic network topology changes. To over-come such issues, we propose a framework that answers automatically the business demands and makes the network self-adaptive. The topology deployment decision is made based on information that the controller gives. So for making sure that our proposed framework gives the best results, we have to study first the topology discovery mechanism in a distributed controller. In this paper, we introduce a self-adaptive management framework of SDN controllers for highly dynamic IoT networks. We evaluate performances of the two most popular distributed SDN controllers (i.e. ONOS and ODL) in a realistic scenario where the network topology changes dynamically. Results show the outperforming of ONOS compared to ODL in discovering the highly dynamic IoT network.

The botnet problem of launching distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on other networks mainly arises from the rapid growth in the number of insecure Internet of Things (IoT) devices distributed across these networks. The focus of this work is to defend such an IoT network and its associated resources from attacks, and to prevent such networks from becoming a part of botnet launching DDoS attacks on other networks and resources. To achieve these objectives, this research emphases designing of a botnet prevention model for Internet of Things using emerging technologies such as Blockchain, Smart Contract, and Software Defined networking (SDN). Blockchain is decentralized structure which fits with the decentralized nature of IoT. For securing IoT network, the proposed solution presented in this research based on building above the IoT network a Blockchain network and on top of it to use Smart Contracts that embedded the SDN rules.

In distributed sharing network, limited by short transmission distance, users need to utilize device-to-device (D2D) communication technology to select idle relay users to support communication transmission and realize resource sharing. D2D communication technology is the core technology to realize resource sharing and information interaction in wireless communication system. This paper proposes a new relay selection strategy based on social-trust and power-efficient for device-to-device underlaying distributed shared network. It mainly involves two network architectures: physical transmission layer and social network layer. According to their own physical location information, users with strong social trust are selected as candidate relay users to prepare for subsequent relay communication. In addition, the optimal relay selection is achieved by considering the factors of quality of service (QoS) and power consumption. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has the lowest average power consumption compared to the existing methods.

This paper addresses the problem of non-optimal performance of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) over Wi-Fi networks. TCP considers packet loss as a signal for congestion leading to reduced sending rate. This idea works well for the wired networks where majority of the packet losses are due to congestion. However, in wireless networks, packets are mostly lost because of transmission errors and mobility of the end hosts. Also, when packets are lost due to disassociation of the receiver from the network during mobility, sender remains idle for a significant period even after the receiver is re-associated. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of Software Defined Network (SDN) assisted TCP for wireless networks. In our approach, mobility induced packet losses are tackled smartly to avoid reduction in sending rate. Further, the data transfer starts immediately as soon as the receiver is re-associated to the network during mobility. Unlike existing solutions, our SDN assisted TCP does not violate the end-to-end semantics and no modification is required in the TCP protocol running at the end hosts. We have implemented and evaluated our approach using Mininet Wi-fi emulation platform. The results establish the applicability of our approach.

It is proposed by combining autonomous data centers using a software-defined networking to create an infrastructure of a single distributed cloud data center with centralized management of distributed resources, the formation of such a system is carried out by successively solving the problems of building a K-connected network topology, creating and placing virtual resources and providing resources using the directed method random search, modeling shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The skyrocketing growth in types and number of heterogeneous applications dramatically increases the amount of energy consumed by distributed green data centers (DGDCs). The spatial and temporal variations in prices of power grid and availability of renewable energy make it highly challenging to minimize the energy cost by intelligently scheduling arriving tasks of heterogeneous applications among green data centers while meeting their expected delay bound constraints. Unlike existing studies, this work proposes a Spatio-Temporal Task Scheduling (STTS) algorithm to minimize the energy cost by cost-effectively scheduling all arriving tasks to meet their delay bound constraints. It well uses spatial and temporal variations to achieve DGDC cost reduction and throughput improvement. In each time slot, the energy cost minimization problem for DGDC providers is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization one, and addressed with the proposed Genetic Simulated-annealing-based Particle swarm optimization. Trace-driven experiments show that STTS achieves larger throughput and lower energy cost than several typical task scheduling approaches while strictly meeting all tasks' delay bound constraints.
