The rapidly increasing number of instances and types of services, especially microservices, and the growing complexity of systems create uncertainty if the existing algorithms and solutions for such problems as service discovery or load balancing are still the case. Building a huge infrastructure for the verification purposes is often too costly and impractical in the production environment therefore it is necessary to find other ways to test architectural approaches and algorithms. One of them is simulators. For simulating very big systems like a telecommunications radio access network the simulator should have certain features: capability of simulating a huge number of services, possibility to model heterogenic and vast network, facility to add a new type of services and logic. This paper presents a concept of such a simulator of services.

Internet measurement and analysis is increasingly challenging as the Internet evolves, primarily due to changing-trends, speed increments or new protocols and ciphers. As such, ad-hoc monitoring equipment comes in handy, albeit cost-effectiveness impedes deployment at a very large scale. As an alternative, big data-based distributed architectures are being proposed for network monitoring and analysis. However, in light of the high throughput currently offered by 100 Gbit/s links, it turns out that state-of-the-art big data solutions fall short of capacity, unless a huge amount of computers are used. In order to effectively tackle that issue, we have created Wormhole: a streaming engine that circumvents existing limitations by distributing the input messages/packets coherently among different off-the-shelf analysis equipment, thus reducing costs and equipment. Should the incoming data rate be larger than the system throughput, a distributed file system can be used for temporary data storage, for subsequent filtering and in-depth analysis. The proposed solution provides on-line real-time monitoring metrics with the ability to gain further insights when required. The prototyped architecture is able to deal with 100 Gbit/s networks and can be easily scaled up to higher rates by just adding more computing nodes and/or by trimming encrypted packet payloads. © 2019 IEEE.

In the past few years, data continuously increase and in various forms called Big Data. Besides, data analytics play an important role more and more in most organizations. From these reasons, many efficiently distributed messaging systems have been introducing to handle Big Data in real-time. However, choosing the appropriate and efficient methods and tools to transfer Big Data is still challenging. Therefore, this paper purposes of comparing the architecture, performance, and resource utilization between Apache Kafka which is one of the favorite tools for Big Data and Apache Pulsar which is similar to Kafka and become one of the latest tools for big data. After we implemented both systems in the same environment, the results show that Pulsar outperforms in throughput, latency, and average resource utilization especially when the size of messages is small (such as 1 KB and 1MB).

To support the rapid development of multimedia services under the Internet of Things (IoT), fog radio access network (F-RAN) has become an emerging architecture in the 5G era. In this paper, content caching in a cloud and fog heterogeneous cooperative manner for F-RAN is investigated. More specifically, we jointly consider cache placement and file transmission in F-RAN, where fog access points (F-APs) serving as collaborative caching agents to provide caching for popular files, thus reducing the traffic from cloud and improving content delivery efficiency. A file download latency minimization problem subject to the storage capacities of F-APs is formulated. A distributed learning algorithm based on a swarm collaboration framework, i.e., stigmergy which enables an F-AP to expand its influence to other F-APs is proposed to improve caching resource utilization. In addition, a double-masking protocol is proposed to guarantee the security of F-APs' locations during stigmergy learning. Extensive simulations are conducted to show the effectiveness and reliability of our proposed scheme.

With the advent of social networks, problems related to information veracity and people trustworthiness naturally arise and become more acute as the numbers of participants and the volumes of exchanged information grow. Predicting and recommending trust (and distrust) levels is essential for a healthier online presence. Although many research efforts are being devoted to these tasks, most studies that have been undertaken in this area are constrained by two facts. 1) Distrust, contrary to trust, is not necessarily propagative, thus is harder to infer using propagative approaches. 2) Most publicly available datasets fail to capture the essence of trust for they ignore one of its most important aspects: its context. In this paper, we propose a multidimensional trust model that allows us to describe some social traits that affect trust, and which could not be described with a unidimensional model. We, then, use these traits to propose a straightforward trust prediction approach that does not rely on trust propagation. Our work aims to provide a usable foundation and to ignite more advanced researches on trust and its applications. © 2019 Association for computing Machinery.

We have proposed a distributed storage system which autonomously migrates a data block into a suitable storage node. In our storage system, heavily accessing data blocks will be migrated autonomously to a higher performance storage node (i.e. an upper storage tier), and rarely accessed data blocks will be migrated to a lower performance storage node (i.e. a lower storage tier). Our investigation shows that it may need several migrations in order to locate a data block onto the most suitable storage node when the destination storage tier has a lot of storage nodes. In this paper, we propose a method to enhance data migration efficiency to improve I/O performance of the whole system. Our simulation results show that the proposed method can greatly reduce I/O execution time than the previous one. The execution time was reduced about one-fifth at the maximum in a system with several hundred scale nodes.

To model the behavior of nonlinear dynamical systems using wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the development of computation and energy efficient distributed modeling techniques is of crucial importance. In this work, Volterra model is considered for the modeling of nonlinear systems because of its significant modeling capability and generalized nonlinear structure. For real-time estimation of the Volterra model parameters, a simple distributed algorithm is designed for a particular framework of WSNs having predefined bridge sensor nodes. The pertinent cost function is expressed as an unconstrained minimization problem using a decomposable augmented Lagrangian form. To facilitate the distributed convex optimization, the augmented Lagrangian form is minimized using alternating direction method of multipliers. The communication and computational complexities involved in the proposed methodology are provided to show its effectiveness in the real-time applications over centralized and non-cooperative solutions. The convergence analysis is provided to guarantee the mean stability of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results obtained under the noisy environment are plotted to demonstrate the effective performance of the proposed algorithm.

Screen content is partly driven by the rapid development of screen applications such as wireless display, screen sharing, cloud computing and gaming, etc. Different from camera-captured content, screen content has relatively bad continuity in spatiotemporal domain and severe movements or sudden changes may occur in continuous pictures. Owing to the special characteristics of screen content, conventional coding tools including High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard are unsuitable for screen content coding (SCC). A SCC extension to HEVC was brought out and developed to meet the demand of screen content coding. This paper provides a brief survey on the main coding tools in the HEVC-SCC extension. Screen content sequences also pose challenges on transmission due to its discontinuity. The alternate presentation of moving and stationary pictures makes the exploitation of bandwidth a technical difficulty. This paper introduces the improvements of SCC rate control in HEVC with better transmission performance and more efficient bandwidth utilization.

distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks continue to escalate in size and impact despite efforts to control and limit exposures that enable them to be successful. This proposal takes a novel approach to the DDoS problem, by combining separate existing information security technologies in a collaborative system. Devices used to gather evidence on attack methods and provide for reverse engineering malware are 'honeypots'. These devices provide researchers with critically important information for analysis and eventually allow for development of detection and response mechanisms to malicious attacks. Intrusion prevention systems (IPS) can take action to alert administrators to potential misuse of computing assets, and in many cases execute predetermined response to malicious activity. This work tests operational communication between distributed honeypots and IPS devices to detect and actively respond to denial of service attacks at near machine speed.

In cloud storage systems a certain degree of data redundancy is important for data availability. Timely regeneration of corrupted or lost data shares is desired to meet the MTTR (mean time to recovery) reliability requirements as usually defined in Service Level Agreements (SLA). Current data regeneration techniques usually assume uniform and/or unlimited network capacity while ignoring the impacts of background traffics and cloud network architecture in practice. This paper proposes a more realistic regeneration strategy by taking these impacts into consideration. Specifically, our approach first extracts an information flow graph from BCube network architecture based on which the real-time network status is predicted using a Markov Chain model. The optimal code regeneration strategy is then formulated as a linear programming (LP) problem which minimizes the sub-flow rate on bottleneck links subject to the constraint of real-time network dynamics. Finally, a distributed multi-commodity flow dynamic routing (MFDR) approximation algorithm is proposed to solve the code regeneration LP. Simulation results indicate that the proposed distributed algorithm on average saves 16.5% data regeneration time of RCTREE and 45.3% of HDFS.
