Prefetching is an important technique used in distributed file system for improving performance. In this paper, we have proposed a novel frequent access pattern-based prefetching algorithm for distributed file system that is implemented in an environment in which multiple types of storage devices such as hard disk, solid state drives and main memory are used. We have also proposed a new placement algorithm for file blocks which move file blocks from one level of memory to other levels of memory by considering the support of the file block access patterns. The combination of frequent access pattern-based prefetching and judicious placement of file blocks in the multiple memory devices in a static manner will reduce the average read access time of the distributed file system. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm can improve the performance of the distributed file system by considering average read access time and cache hits. For the performance comparison study purpose, we have considered the support-based prefetching algorithm.

In the area of network monitoring and measurement a number of good tools are already available. However, most mature tools do not account for changes in network management brought about through Software Defined networking (SDN). New tools developed to address the SDN paradigm often lack both observation scope and performance scale to support distributed management of accelerated measurement devices, high-throughput network processing, and distributed network function monitoring. In this paper we present an approach to distributed network monitoring and management using an agent-based edge computing framework. In addition, we provide a number of real-world examples where this system has been put into practice.

Cloud computing provides a distributed Internet based platform for data and application hosting such as Internet of Things (IoT), cloud applications and social applications. Despite increased use of cloud computing, there are serious issues due to inherent problems such as lukewarm reliability, low-granularity location-awareness, and global view of the network and also dependency on the communication infrastructure for mobility support. Fog computing is a network based computing paradigm that allows essential parts of the computing processes to be moved to a point near the user, and hence emulating a locally provided service improving users quality of experience (QoE) in many dimensions such as response time and availability. The duty of fog networks is to connect each component of the fog architecture seamlessly. However, managing such a complex network, maintaining connectivity and providing on-demand services, particularly in large-scale applications of the Internet of Things (IoT), is so convoluted. Therefore, a new architecture is needed to deal with predicting and maintaining the connectivity graph of network, design distributed SDN system that meet the harsh requirement of fog computing, implement and manage VNFCs through the network, and orchestrate these components together. Hence, an integrated end-to-end SDN/NFV reference architecture by means of orchestration of integrated Cloud, Fog, and network resources has been proposed.

Emergency analysis for social networking sites have gained increased attention. In order to detect emergencies in University Forums, we present an emergency analysis method based on affective computing. The method detects the emergency and calculates the scores in real-time based on affective computing and the University Public Opinion Ontology (UPO_Ontology) established manually. The method is evaluated on two test datasets. The results show that the UPO_Ontology and affective computing greatly improved the accuracy, recall and F-measure. The method proposed in this paper meets the requirement of real-time detection. What's more, It gain of 1.24% in F-measure over the "event-specific detection" proposed by Laylavi et al. and outperforms emergency detect using contextual semantics by nearly 7.1% in F-measure. The analysis of the emergencies in University Forums will help Universities deal with emergencies more effectively and provide students with better service. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Cloud computing has added new dimensions to the world of computing technology. However, it has various security and privacy concerns. The major threats are Denial of service (DoS) and distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks to the cloud technology in recent years. In this paper, we design an efficient security framework which is protocol specific Multithreaded Network Intrusion Detection System (PM-NIDS) aiming at detecting DoS/DDoS attacks in the cloud. Here, the incoming packets are separated according to the protocol and queued for further processing. Each queue is handled by a framework thread which extracts the relevant features and applies protocol specific classifiers for each packet in the queue. Finally, it generates the alerts for the detected intrusions. We have performed different experiments for the feasibility analysis and validation of the proposed framework

A cost-effective backup resource allocation model for cloud computing systems based on a probabilistic protection guarantee was presented. This paper implements the backup resource allocation model and tests its failure recovery performance. A prototype cloud system is implemented by using the existing capabilities of OpenStack framework. We observe that a failed virtual machine is successfully recovered by using a shared backup machine in single- and multi-site environments.

In IoT, a flexible and trustworthy access control framework is of significance to ensure the security of lightweight IoT devices. The conventional centralized access control framework is no longer fit for the open and large-scale IoT environments. In this paper, we propose an attribute-based distributed access control framework (ADAC) for IoT using blockchain technology. The attributes, such as manufacturer and object-specified attribute, are considered in the proposed ADAC for more fine-grained access control in the open and lightweight IoT devices. Particularly, we design a smart contract system, which includes a subject contract (SC), an object contract (OC), an access control contract (ACC) and multiple policy contracts (PCs), to manage and access attributes of IoT devices for distributed and trustworthy access control (DTAC). SC and OC are responsible for managing subject attribute and object attribute information, respectively. PCs are used to manage access control policies. ACC performs authorization judgment by accessing attributes and policies. Finally, a case study is performed to demonstrate the workflow and show that ADAC could achieve fine-grained and flexible access control for IoT.

Smart Grid is considered entirely indispensable in the next generation of electricity networks since shifting from the conventional to the cyber-physical power grids; relying on the Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMIs) where a bidirectional communication with the utility provider supports improved reliability and satisfaction of customers' needs. Moreover, Smart Grid promises self-healing, i.e., automatic and quick detection and analysis of faults and failures. Unfortunately, the new grid turns into an information system and as such, it becomes vulnerable to cyber-risks and cyber-threats so that specific cyber-attacks can be directed to either Smart Grids or Microgrids (small-scale form of grids that contain distributed generators and power-storage units). In this new scenario, it is highly required to be cyber-resilient and to detect anomalies in the Smart Grid such as misusage, system faults or cyber-security incidents. Although anomalies could be detected in a holistic approach over a Cloud computing infrastructure, this research paper proposes Fog computing model to detect the anomalous patterns in the electricity consumption data by means of collaboration of distributed devices at the edge of Smart Grid network enough in advance (reducing communication latencies). The implementation of the proposed solution follows the Open-Fog Reference Architecture (RA) and a Microgrid on premises of the university of Vigo for a preliminary result as a proof of concept.

There has been a great focus on services across the Internet. Freelancing is one such service that is thought to be in the middle of a dramatic change. Here, the online freelancing platforms have created global opportunities for people to outsource their works, and seek employment slots, like a job. Online freelancing platforms have transformed how, when, and where the work is to be performed. However, these platforms also carry risks. These platforms lack credibility, security, and flexibility d ue to centralized nature. Designing n ew approach, that overcomes these issues, is very important for growth of freelancing. This paper proposes Boomerang, a decentralized freelance administration paradigm on Hyperledger Fabric. Hyperledger Fabric is a distributed operating system for permissioned blockchains. The Boomerang integrates blockchain-based distributed ledger, consensus protocol, and a fine-grained access control. The design includes demonstration of Boomerang and a detailed description of Boomerang architecture. The prototype implementation, based on the Boomerang architecture, is detailed next. The implementation of database and application logic are illustrated for better understanding. In addition, the tools chosen and assumptions made in prototype development are mentioned. This research would help the coming and existing startups to secure grow fast with requisite security.

In the last decade blockchain technology become mainstream research topic because of its decentralized, peer to peer transaction, distributed consensus, and anonymity properties. The blockchain technology overshadows regulatory problem and technical challenges. A smart contract is a set of programs which are self-verifying, self-executing and tamper resistant. Smart contract with the integration of blockchain technology capable of doing a task in real time with low cost and provide a greater degree of security. This paper firstly, explains the various components and working principle of smart contract. Secondly, identify and analyse the various use cases of smart contract along with the advantage of using smart contract in blockchain application. Lastly, the paper concludes with challenges lie in implementing smart contract the future real-life scenario.
