We consider the distributed setting of N autonomous mobile robots that operate in Look-Compute-Move cycles and communicate with other robots using colored lights (the robots with lights model). We study the fundamental problem of repositioning N autonomous robots on a plane so that each robot is visible to all others (the COMPLETE VISIBILITY problem) on this model. We consider obstructed visibility under which a robot cannot see another robot if a third robot is positioned between then on the straight line connecting them. The literature solves this problem on the robots with lights model for point robots. In this paper, we study this problem, for the very first time, on the robots with lights model for fat robots, i.e., the robots which have physical extents. In particular, we present and analyze an algorithm for the fat robots of unit disc size extents that solves COMPLETE VISIBILITY in O(N) time using 9 colors in the fully synchronous setting avoiding robot collisions.

Structured Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay networks based on distributed Hash Table (DHT) provide self-organization and fault tolerance along with good look-up efficiency. This makes them a perfect alternative for designing distributed applications where participating entities (peers) leave or join the system dynamically. However due to continuous churn of peers, periodic maintenance of overlay structure is required resulting in large amount of network traffic. This issue becomes more critical when logical overlay topology is different from actual physical network topology which is a common phenomenon in P2P overlay networks. In this paper, we present a novel approach of designing DHT based P2P overlays using Software Defined Networks (SDN) paradigm. SDN provides flexible ways to tune the policies and rules of underlying physical network dynamically according to the application. In our approach, we have used SDN concepts to bring the overlay topology closer to actual physical topology with an aim to reduce the maintenance traffic. We have implemented an improved SDN based DHT on a smaller scale as proof of concept. The experimental results suggest and establish the applicability of our approach.

Reliability of distributed storage is a key issue for storage of big data. This paper presents an evaluation mechanism for the popular distributed file system (HDFS). The evaluation mechanism (RST) is based on HDFS in unstable network environment. The RST can be divided into two parts, one part (NE) is that the NameNode evaluates the storage reliability of DataNode, the other part (CE) is that clients evaluate the communication quality between the client and DataNodes. This paper also proposes strategies of data redundancy and file reading and writing based on RST. The experimental results show that the strategy of data redundancy improves the availability of data and the process of data access improves the success rate of communication in unstable network environment.

Virtual Machine (VM) placement aims to efficiently deploy the dynamically arriving VM requests on active physical servers of a data center. It is one of the most challenging and NP-complete problem [9] while considering the large number of optimization criteria and multi-resource VM requirements. In this context, most of the existing works deal only with limited trade-off among types of resources, individual criteria of optimization and homogeneous computing environment, thus resulting unnecessary activation of servers and drastically increased energy consumptions. High energy consumption will not only lead to high operational cost but also maximize the CO2 emissions to the surroundings. In order to achieve the objectives of energy-efficiency, cloud is required to be analyzed with the perspective of balanced resource utilization. Thus, in this work we propose a distributed multi-coloring model for balanced VM placement and goes beyond the current state of the art by maximizing load balancing and efficient use of computing resources. The proposed solution is extensively evaluated through simulation. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of solution over the existing heuristics and show that it can minimize the number of running servers effectively while optimizing the performance metrics of energy saving, resource utilization and load balancing.

Network has become an indispensable part of people's lives. However, network insecurity still has negative impact on the development of network. Trust evaluation is becoming the core of network security enhancement. In distributed network, the node with the highest trust value is often selected as the subnet management node. The traditional distributed trust evaluation frameworks cannot achieve the best effect because of the ignorance of trust value stability of each node. To address this problem, this paper proposes a management node selection method based on cloud model. This method employs the cloud model to analyze the stability of network nodes, and selects the optimal node based on the three numerical features of cloud model. The experiment results show the effectiveness of our method.

The construction of telecommunication network is a complex engineering, requiring telecom operators to focus on the operational effects after construction, as well as summarize the construction experiences for further improvements. This paper innovatively proposes indicators framework of network construction and develops a post-evaluation model based on analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. Furthermore, the proposed post-evaluation model is used to analyze the network operation effect after construction in two cities, the result verifies that the proposed post-evaluation model has promising performance and practical effect for operators.

Peer-to-peer systems are difficult to manage due to their decentralized nature and the lack of a central controlling instance. Thus, establishing a quality of service is a challenging task. In the last decade, decentralized monitoring approaches have been proposed, which are either precise or fault-tolerant. Tree-based approaches, which belong to the former category, are prone to churn as the structure needs to reorganize itself on node failures. In this paper, we propose the monitoring approach Mr. Tree, a protocol that enhances the robustness of existing tree-based approaches by introducing multiple realities, through building up multiple trees, and smartly replicating and maintaining aggregated data. Three modes are proposed to fit individual scenarios and needs. The evaluation shows a significant decrease of the error in completeness of monitoring data while keeping the costs relatively low. The error of the extended protocol under heavy churn is in the magnitude of the original protocol under low churn conditions, which is 8%, whereby the error of the original protocol under heavy churn raises to a value above 22%. The superior precision cancels out the increased costs already in scenarios with moderate churn.

Over the past decade, much focus in the area of Technology has deviated towards two relatively new areas;"The Internet of Things" and "Machine Learning". Although completely separate technologies, they have one major factor in common, Data. The IoT paradigm relies on sensor devices to ingest data and gain valuable insight on their surrounding environment. Data is often considered the newest natural resource. Analysing data instantaneously can give companies a leading edge in their market. Machine learning algorithms are helping companies achieve this feat in the most efficient way possible. In this paper, we propose a governance architecture for dynamic distributed data mining, utilizing a flow based programming inspired model. We illustrate a collaborative protocol between edge devices and central controllers where computation and distribution may be driven by factors including hardware limitations, latency, or energy consumption. Our proposed architecture is evaluated in a connected vehicle use case. To demonstrate the feasibility of our work, we present two scenarios;local real-time prediction of driver alertness, and task/computation offloading based on CPU usage of the edge device.

One of the important objectives of service providers in the 5G network is to improve the use of network resources to provide multiple types of services with a good quality of service. In this context, the MEC (Mobile Edge computing) presents a new opportunity that allows hosting applications close to end users with a reduction of latency and performance improvement. In this article we will propose a new architecture that improves the fast and efficient delivery of new applications, based on the concept of MEC and the important role of machine learning algorithms. The proposed architecture will help network operators to better exploit network resources and improve their services. Indeed, it ensures the collection of radio information, the prediction of necessary needs and the dynamic and efficient sharing of network resources.

Smart grids are in their developing stages, but they are going to impact the world soon. The more they influence us, the more they have a threat of being misused. Industrial Internet of Things(IIoT) is being extensively used in various smart grid based applications. IIoT has been an area for cyber-attacks to drastically affect various industries and businesses. Existing technologies are just not enough to deal with cyber-physical systems. Blockchain can help in creating more efficient, secure and reliable IIoT systems. Such systems, which involve rapid, distributed and complex energy transactions and data exchanges often face integrity and trust related issues. Blockchain can provide a solution to such problems. Third-party interactions have been removed using blockchain based smart contracts, thereby facilitating the adoption of decentralization and establishing a global truth across all the nodes in the network. Efficiency can further be increased by logging only the most important events like faults in the system or injection of malicious data. This paper proposes an innovative collective decision algorithm using blockchain to build a resilient network of Phasor Measurement Units(PMUs) for Wide Area Measurement System(WAMS). The algorithm not only identifies “malicious” nodes in the system but also takes the correct decision, even in their presence, to perform further action. The proposed solution is validated on a hardware-in-loop platform with the hardware PMUs connected on an IEEE 9 bus system.
