A recently proposed public key cryptosystem based on Chebyshev polynomials suggests a new approach to data encryption. The sequence of Chebyshev polynomial is proved to be periodically, but its symmetry properties have not been investigated in depth. In this paper, a new representation of Chebyshev polynomial is introduced to study these properties, and their impacts on the cryptosystem. It is shown that the factual private key space of the cryptosystem is only half or quarter of the period of Chebyshev polynomial sequence. Proper parameters should be chosen to ensure the security of the cryptosystem.

Spatial Modulation (SM), conveying data bits via the antenna-activation process, is a novel modulation technique for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. SM can be combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to improve the reliability, quality and capacity of transmission. However, SM OFDM systems also inherit from OFDM systems the drawback of high sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO), especially in distributed MIMO environment where the CFOs of all transmit antennas are different. To overcome this problem, in this paper, the CFO characteristics of distributed SM OFDM systems are studied and a new iterative CFO compensation algorithm which exploits the interference effect caused by each antenna's CFO is proposed. Moreover, the information-conveying feature of SM system is applied to the proposed CFO compensation algorithm to reduce the computational complexity and provide fast compensation of CFOs. Simulation results show that the proposed CFO compensator achieves considerable performance improvement with low complexity.

A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is becoming a practical platform for pervasive social networking. People chat with each other via MANET for instant social activities. How to help mobile users to build up trust in such an environment is becoming an important issue. We develop a reputation system for pervasive social networking. We implement it by applying Nokia N900 smartphones as MANET nodes based on a distributed energy-efficient social networking platform. Our system can indicate each user's local reputation during chatting. It also provides detailed reputation information and supports on-chat voting and afterwards voting. This demo paper introduces the system design and its principal functionalities.

In this paper, we consider the peer-to-peer (P2P) model as a fully distributed, scalable system different from centralized coordinated systems like Cloud computing systems. A P2P system is composed of peer processes (peers). Here, applications are realized in activities and cooperation of a group of multiple peers. Since there is no centralized coordination in P2P systems, each peer has to obtain information about others by itself. In group cooperation activities, each member peer has to be trustworthy so that malicious actions of a peer cannot affect overall outcome of the whole group. It is important to consider the trustworthiness of each peer as a base of cooperation in the distributed environment. The goal of a group and the way to archive the goal are decided by the member peers. During the cooperation, opinions of each group member have to be considered. Malicious and unexpected opinions of member peers can negatively affect the output of a group. Hence, it is significant to discuss how to compose a group only by including more trustworthy peers and making less trustworthy pees not affect other peers. In this paper, by taking advantage of the trustworthiness concept of each peer, we propose a novel approach to composing a trustworthy group in the distributed agreement protocols.

Context-based communication allows for the dissemination of messages to mobile users with a specified context, i.e. at a location and with certain attribute values. This enables, e.g., a message to students on campus attending a certain class, with information about a study group for an upcoming exam. An overlay network of context-aware routers efficiently disseminate the messages to all matching receivers. Directed forwarding of such messages requires that the routers maintain knowledge about the contexts of connected users. Global knowledge, i.e., each router knowing about every user, scales poorly, though, because of the necessary updates.

A secured Hierarchically distributed Peer-to-Peer (HDP2PC) architecture and Clustering algorithm is used to overcome the scalability problem in structured peer to peer networks. It is possible to incorporate any number of layers of nodes. The architecture is based on a multilayer overlay network of peer neighbourhoods. Supernodes, which act as representatives of neighbourhoods, are iteratively grouped to form higher level neighbourhoods. Within a certain level of the hierarchy, peers cooperate within their respective neighbourhoods to perform P2P clustering. A novel approach is proposed while indexing the documents in to various nodes arranged in hierarchy. A hashing mechanism is used to index the documents. A number of filters are applied as parameters thereby reducing the number of comparisons required to extract keyphrases. distributed key phrase extraction algorithm is used to extract patterns by interpreting clusters stored in the neighbour workstations. The query can be applied for loosely structured format also. Speedup is provided by manipulating the neighbourhood size and height parameters. Privacy is also provided to data inside the peers. No data is shared between the peer nodes. Security can be enforced in the peers while clustering is performed.

Nodes in mobile networks are usually unevenly distributed over space. Several dense clusters of nodes are interconnected by a few nodes in sparsely occupied areas. Removing vital nodes along such bridges would partition the network and severely reduce the overall connectivity. Consequently, detecting and protecting those few vital nodes is crucial for keeping the network operational. In order to achieve this task, we present our novel approach: BridgeFinder. Most importantly, BridgeFinder allows us to calculate good estimates for global graph measures, while operating as a fully distributed algorithm and causing only very little messaging overhead. It is based on an extended gossiping protocol and is significantly faster and more precise than existing mechanisms. The results of our extensive evaluation show that BridgeFinder is indeed very effective in detecting the few crucial for the network operation nodes.

Providers such as YouTube offer easy access to multimedia content to millions, generating high bandwidth and storage demand on the Content Delivery Networks they rely upon. More and more, the diffusion of this content happens on online social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, where social cascades can be observed when users increasingly repost links they have received from others. In this paper we describe how geographic information extracted from social cascades can be exploited to improve caching of multimedia files in a Content Delivery Network. We take advantage of the fact that social cascades can propagate in a geographically limited area to discern whether an item is spreading locally or globally. This informs cache replacement policies, which utilize this information to ensure that content relevant to a cascade is kept close to the users who may be interested in it. We validate our approach by using a novel dataset which combines social interaction data with geographic information: we track social cascades of YouTube links over Twitter and build a proof-of-concept geographic model of a realistic distributed Content Delivery Network. Our performance evaluation shows that we are able to improve cache hits with respect to cache policies without geographic and social information. It is becoming increasingly challenging for the contemporary Internet to satisfy the explosion in networking services and applications with their widely diverse and dynamic QoS requirements and resource demands. For smarter networking management and operations, we hypothesize that next generation networks should be endowed with “memory”-like (i.e., functionally similar to human memory) capabilities and should explicitly manage their resources and services. In this paper, we introduce SmartNet, a new memory-enabled autonomic network architecture that is scalable, resilient and adaptable at runtime. SmartNet's memory, we term NetMem, manages data related to multiple networking concerns, namely application, communication, and resource concerns. SmartNet's NetMem maintains “knowledge” - the fourth networking concern in our networking model - in a distributed knowledge plane that can be rapidly accessed in a simple and systematic way by SmartCells (SmartNet's basic building block) and the services they implement. Each SmartCell has intrinsic monitoring, control and analysis capabilities and can acquire resources on demand. For scalability and to facilitate inter-communications and services' support between SmartCells, regions, termed CellDomains, may be dynamically formed. CellDomains would incorporate favored services or resources. Our simulation results demonstrate an improvement in networking operations with our memory-enabled network management.

The concept of "Microgrid" is one of the most promising architectures expected to support the transition from present to future Electricity Grids by integrating large amounts of Renewable Energy Sources. The numerous benefits of microgrids have attracted attention and during the last decade several projects and researches have focused on this field. Within different European projects the pilot microgrid located at Gaidouromantra, in Kythnos island was constructed in order to electrify a number of vacation houses. In this paper, a simulation model for this microgrid together with some simple guidelines for modeling such systems are presented. The model was developed for testing the system performance under different operating conditions as a subtask of the FP6 EU project More-Microgrids. Specifically, the selected mathematical models and assumptions are presented. In addition, simulation results and discussion of them are given compared also with real data measurements which validate the model accuracy. © Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2011.
