Radio frequency spectrum is a finite and scarce resource. However, past research efforts usually assume orthogonal channels of fixed bandwidth, prohibiting the effective use of the spectrum. Recently some work began to explore dynamic channel width adaptation. In this paper, by reducing the optimal channel width adaptation into the "elastic packing" problem, we devise distributed algorithms based on graph multi-interval coloring and max-coloring. We then integrate our algorithms into the multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks. Simulation results show that our schemes can improve network performance significantly.

Support Vector Machine (SVM) is an efficient data mining approach for data classification. However, SVM algorithm requires very large memory requirement and computational time to deal with very large dataset. To reduce the computational time during the process of training the SVM, a combination of distributed and parallel computing method, CoDLib have been proposed. Instead of using a single machine for parallel computing, multiple machines in a cluster are used. Message Passing Interface (MPI) is used in the communication between machines in the cluster. The original dataset is split and distributed to the respective machines. Experiments results shows a great speed up on the training of the MNIST dataset where training time has been significantly reduced compared with standard LIBSVM without affecting the quality of the SVM.

The test activities performed during the life cycle of the telecommunication service development ensure the service quality and stability so necessary to achieve the maximum availability and reliability. The paper presents authors' contribution to remote and distributed testing for mobile communications services based on cloud computing assets and paradigms. The access solutions to the test methods were implemented for the GSM and GSM-R (Global System for Mobile - Railways) related Intelligent Networks services. The scalability and flexibility of the architecture allows to the proposed solution to be used, for both the production and the educational environments, to access the resources located on the different sites for the tests purpose. The concept of the remote test solution and the practical examples based on the remote tests with real equipments are presented in this paper.

Cognitive Radio (CR) is a next-generation wireless communication system that exploits underutilized licensed spectrum to optimize the utilization of the overall radio spectrum. A distributed Cognitive Radio Network (DCRN) is a distributed wireless network established by a number of CR hosts in the absence of fixed network infrastructure. Context awareness and intelligence are key characteristics of CR networks that enable the CR hosts to be aware of their operating environment in order to make an optimal joint action. This research aims to achieve context awareness and intelligence in DCRN using our novel Locally-Confined Payoff Propagation (LCPP), which is an important feature in Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL). The LCPP mechanism is suitable to be applied in most applications in DCRN that require context awareness and intelligence such as scheduling, congestion control, as well as Dynamic Channel Selection (DCS), which is the focus of this paper. Simulation results show that the LCPP mechanism is a promising approach. The LCPP mechanism converges to an optimal joint action including networks with cyclic topology. Fast convergence is possible. The investigation in this paper serve as an important foundation for future work in this research field.

Due to the fact that each sensor node of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is usually powered by batteries which cannot be recharged in most cases, there exist a contradiction between the limited energy supply and the demand of a long network lifetime. The emerging compressed sensing (CS) theory provides a promising scheme to alleviate this contradiction. The existing methods based on both CS and sparse random projections may save energy to some extent, they still result in some unnecessary energy consumption. In order to further save the energy, this paper proposes an alternate data gathering method based on sparse random projections. In the proposed method, we adopt an alternate strategy, that is, the sensor nodes are randomly divided into two groups, one group monitors the data and the other keeps silence in a period, and they switch the duty in the next period. In addition, the ill-posed problem of signal recovery may be solved because monitoring data may be viewed as compressible signal in general. So the proposed method can save the energy and guarantee the balanced load. Experimental results show that the proposed method consumes less energy to obtain almost same reconstruction quality of the signal, compared with the existing methods based on random projections.

Vehicular ad hoc networks provide vehicle-to-vehicle communications and safety-related applications to enhance the road safety. However, safety-related applications, like Local Danger Warning, need a high trust level in received messages. Indeed, decisions are made depending on these messages. To increase the trustworthiness, a consensus mechanism is used. With consensus, vehicles need to receive at least X times the same warning before making a decision. Because the consensus should meet real-time constraints of safety applications, a main issue is to set parameter X. In this paper, we investigate the problem of consensus and propose a generic model to define decision method involved in consensus. Then, we propose to dynamically set the consensus parameter according to the neighborhood density and the warning criticalness. The proposed mechanism enhances the “majority of freshest X with threshold” decision method [1] and is analytically modeled. This context-aware and data-centric security mechanism ensures a quick and correct decision. We present some simulation results that validate our model.

Mobile communication companies at present are looking for a 4G technology that aims at better reliability. This aim can be achieved by using Multiple Inputs Multiple Outputs (MIMO) system which is difficult to implement for the mobile terminals due to the limitations of the complexity, size and cost. So, these companies have been looking for a system which emulates a MIMO system. The cooperative relaying system has been proposed as a solution to be used to take the advantages of MIMO. The cooperative relaying system enables single antenna mobiles in a multi user environment to share their antennas and generate a virtual multiple antenna transmitters. In this paper, we investigate a single relay system that aims for a reliable communication. The main goal of this paper is to study the feasibility of the proposed single relay cooperative transmission in the mobile environment, and evaluate it with respect to the direct link transmission. Both systems are presented and a comparison in terms of bit error rate (BER) reveals that the single relay system performs better. The proposed single relay system needs an efficient coding technique to improve the performance in terms of reliability. Therefore, STBC as a coding technique is used, and the results proved that this technique decreases the BER.

Nowadays cloud computing can be considered as a key element of modern ICT systems, changing the technological and architectural aspects that these systems are designed and managed. The number and variety of applications, exploiting the advantages of this new computing paradigm, is increasing, emerging a new market of services and resources. Modern applications, from enterprise software to mobile and social networking apps are adapted and become available through the Cloud, allowing wider adoption and advanced functionality. Besides the numerous technical and technological advancements, cloud computing also leverages new business models and value networks. To this direction more entities are involved in the service delivery process and marketplaces are created to ease the development of applications through reusability and aggregation of services and resources. In this paper we present an innovative mechanism for the resolution of the customers' requirements which enhances the process of selecting cloud services from the business point of view.

Resource scheduling is crucial to data centers. However, most existing resource scheduling algorithms focus only on one-dimensional resource models, ignoring the fact that multiple resources (e.g. CPU, memory, storage, and network bandwidth) are consumed simultaneously. Competition for multiple resources has become increasingly severe as cloud computing allows uncoordinated and heterogeneous users to share a data center. In this paper, we map such a resource scheduling problem to a bounded multi-dimensional scheduling problem (B-MDKP), taking into account the requirement dependency among multi-dimensional resources. Due to the NP hardness of B-MDKP, we present Multi-dimensional Resource Integrated Scheduling (MRIS), a novel heuristic algorithm to obtain the approximate optimal solution. To demonstrate the advantage of our scheduling scheme, we have implemented MRIS in Haizea, a resource management architecture and made a detailed comparison with existing studies. Our evaluation results show that MRIS achieves high efficiency and high performance for a diverse set of workloads.

P2P video streaming is a cost effective and scalable alternative for client-server based video delivery over the Internet. In P2P video streaming schemes, the Internet peers contribute their bandwidth for data dissemination in a multicast group. Since the performance of a P2P streaming system is dependent on contribution of the group members, free riders is one of the main challenges of such systems. Free riders are some selfish peers that do not upload any data to the other peers while downloading from the network. Therefore, designing incentive mechanisms for P2P streaming systems is essential. In this paper we designed and proposed an incentive mechanism for mesh based P2P video streaming. The proposed approach includes two parts. In the first part, the contribution of the peers in the network is measured and maintained in a distributed fashion, and in the second part, differentiated service is provided for the peers based on their contribution. We simulated the proposed approach and the results show the efficiency of the proposed mechanism in improving the overall quality of the perceived video in the group.
