More and more data centers are built using commodity TCP/IP and Ethernet networks because of their low cost and ease-of-use. But TCP would experience catastrophic throughput collapse in a communication pattern, termed "Incast", where multiple senders simultaneously send data to a receiver. This phenomenon potentially arises in many typical applications, such as distributed storage, Map Reduce and web search. However, solutions proposed by former research either are not easy to implement or high in cost. In this paper, we present a simple and cost-effective method - shrinking MTU - to mitigate TCP In cast throughput collapse. Through analysis and extensive simulations, decreasing MTU size can delay the onset of In cast.

We propose a Markov model for performance evaluation and capacity estimation of IEEE 802.11e-EDCA (Enhanced distributed Channel Access) WLAN. EDCA defines four traffic classes (voice, video, best effort and background) based on their quality of service requirements. With the help of the proposed Markov model, we derive analytically the service rate of access point and bandwidth utilization, and then validate our model by comparing analytical results with simulation experiments. We also show that there exists a trade-off between user satisfaction and bandwidth utilization.

Significant advances in mobile networks have taken place recently, specifically with regard to multi-hop wireless networks, including DTNs and sensor networks. A testing environment that is conducive to realistic evaluation of such networks and their protocols and services is critical. In our efforts toward realizing this goal, we propose a novel mobile testbed of two main components. The first consists of a network of robots with personality-mimicking, human-encounter behaviors, which is our focus for this work. The personality is built upon behavioral profiling of mobile users based on our extensive wireless-network analysis. The second component combines the testbed with human society using a new concept that we refer to as participatory testing utilizing crowd sourcing. We blend these two components in the design of our testbed to bridge the gap between controlled and uncontrolled environments. Our prototype testbed demonstrates a realistic mobile networking testbed that emulates human behavior based on profiles while providing a scalable and reproducible environment. In addition, we report on our initial actual implementation of the proposed testbed architecture using two iRobot Create, one HP iPAQ PDA and 9 Nokia tablet devices. Our initial results show that by incorporating personalities into the mobile nodes, they can use autonomous, distributed and efficient algorithms to identify communities based on profile similarity. Correlating such community identification with the mobility of the nodes can indeed result in behavior mimicking traced mobile communities in the real world. Our work is the first to investigate this direction and opens several promising opportunities for research in the area of mobile test beds with many variations in DTN evaluation and participatory networking.

Streaming service is becoming more popular for many users to access multimedia content. With different demand of clients and different service charge given, streaming servers must provide different levels of quality of service (QoS) and apply more effective resource management scheme. This paper proposes an enhanced model of harmonic proportional bandwidth allocation scheme to re-utilize the released bandwidth. Our proposed strategy uses one part (defined as β) of the released bandwidth to raise service quality of clients and increase total bandwidth utilization. The rest part (i.e., 1-β) of the released bandwidth reduces the delay time of clients by serving more clients who are not allowed to be served originally, where β is between 0 and 1. In the simulation, we discuss what the value of β is better when simultaneously considering the two factors including the total bandwidth utilization and the delay time of users, respectively. Furthermore, our proposed strategy is validated through the simulation that the high utilization and lower delay time properties for streaming servers can be obtained no matter whether the probability of clients that leave services is high or low even in different request scheduling policies.

Node compromise is a serious threat in wireless sensor networks. Once a node is compromised an adversary can inject false data into the network and drop the data by pinpointing to a particular route. In this paper a scheme based on virtual energy based encryption using RC4 encryption mechanism is presented. The key to the RC4 encryption mechanism dynamically changes as the function of the residual virtual energy of the sensor changes. This residual virtual energy gets depleted as the node traverses different functional states. Thus different keys are generated based on the current residual virtual energy of the sensor node for successive data transmission. The sensed data is encrypted using RC4 algorithm and propagates from source node to the cluster head using randomized multipath algorithm Due to the random propagation of data, even if the adversary pin points to a particular route he cannot collect all the data since, it takes different path for the same source node to the cluster head each time. The cluster head verifies the authenticity and integrity of the incoming data using the predicted value of the key generated by the sender's virtual energy and forwards the data to sink, thus preventing the need for any control messages for key exchange. The simulation result shows that the average end to end delay and packet loss probability remain constant for any number of nodes and for varying no of event regions.

The demand for the ubiquitous service is increasing due to the rapidly growing demand for increased data rates, mobile Internet and the diversity of wireless communication technologies. Also due to the challenges to interconnect heterogeneous network technologies and to offer ubiquitous services, telecommunications operators look after the best way to provide continuity of service during handover and how to give the mobile client the possibility to get the best connection anywhere and anytime. In this paper we propose an architecture and its implementation which guarantees the continuity of service during a communication in the context of heterogeneous access network technologies. The suggested solution named HaVe-2W3G (Handover Vertical WLAN WiMAX 3G) ensures a Vertical handover between heterogeneous access networks technologies: WLAN, WiMAX and 3G. A performance evaluation of such implementation is shown using a streaming application.

The success of online social networking and of mobile phone services has resulted in increased attention to mobile social networking. Matchmaking is a key component of mobile social networking. It notifies users of nearby people who fulfil some criteria, such as having shared interests, and who are therefore good candidates for being added to a user's social network. Unfortunately, the existing matchmaking approaches are troublesome from a privacy point of view. One approach has users' smartphones broadcast their owners' personal information to nearby devices. This approach reveals more personal information than necessary. The other approach requires a trusted server that participates in each matchmaking operation. Namely, the server knows the interests and current location of each user and performs matchmaking based on this information. This approach allows the server to track users. This paper proposes a privacy-preserving matchmaking protocol for mobile social networking that lets a potentially malicious user learn only the interests (or some other traits) that he has in common with a nearby user, but no other interests. In addition, the protocol is distributed and does not require a trusted server that can track users or that needs to be involved in each matchmaking operation. We present an implementation and evaluation of our protocol on Nexus One smartphones and demonstrate that the protocol is practical.

The idea of ID/Locator separation has been suggested to solve the routing scalability and mobility problems in the Internet. Some solutions have been proposed based on this idea, such as LISP and HIP. However these solutions are either bandwidth inefficient or difficult to deploy. In this paper, we propose a novel network architecture based on the idea of ID/Locator separation, which can easily integrate efficient mobility management mechanisms besides supporting the routing scalability, and introduce a new mobility management mechanism (MILS, Mobility management based on ID/Locator Separation) based on the architecture. The proposed architecture and the mechanism have three unique features. Firstly, the mapping system is distributed to the edge network which reduces the handoff delay. Secondly, the destination address overwritten reduces the bandwidth cost to transmit the packets. Thirdly, the routing information contained in the identifier of the MN provides good compatibility with the Internet. Performance analysis results show that MILS has low signaling cost and handoff delay.

Smartphones, PDA, Sensors, Actuators, Phidgets and Smart Objects (i.e. objects with processing and networking capabilities) are more and more present in everyday's life. Merging all these technologies with the Internet is often described as 'Internet of Things' (IoT). In the IoT vision, Things around us provide a pervasive network of interacting and interconnected devices. However building IoT applications is a long and arduous work, reserved for specialists, requiring specific knowledge's in terms of network protocols and programming languages. The lack of widespread and easy-to-configure solutions is an obstacle for the development of this area. A universal framework, offering simplification and standardization, could facilitate the emergence of this promising field in terms of applications and business. IoT needs a solid foundation for rapid, simple development and deployment of new services. In this paper, we present D-LITe, a universal framework for building IoT applications over heterogeneous sets of small devices. D-LITe offers solutions for deploying application's logic, and executing it on Smart Objects despite their heterogeneity. An implementation of D-LITe on tiny devices, such as TelosB motes, allows to show that our framework is realistic even with the constraints of such devices.
