The automotive industry has seen enormous growth in the size and complexity of electrical and electronic system architectures. As complexity increases the problem of diagnosing faults in a vehicle's electrical and electronic systems is becoming increasingly difficult. Many faults are as a result of system-level disturbances or interactions that are difficult to interpret and diagnose using existing component-level diagnostics which have been traditionally focused on mechanical system diagnostics. The problem of rising complexity is exacerbated by increasing in-service warranty periods with some automotive OEMs now offering 5 or 7 year, or even `life-time' warranties. This paper discusses the need for a new system-level approach to the management of faults in a vehicle's networked electronic systems and how this might be achieved by using the data that flows over a vehicle's data networks. This paper compares different industry approaches to system-level health monitoring of complex distributed computing environments and presents a proposal for the application of health monitoring to an automotive electrical and electronic architecture.

To extend the life time of a wireless sensor network, sensor nodes usually switch between dormant and active states according to a duty cycling scheme. In randomized schemes, sensors use only partial or no information about their neighbors, and rely on randomness to generate working schedules. Duty cycling schemes are often evaluated in terms of the connection delay, i.e., the time until two neighboring nodes are simultaneously active, and the connection duration, i.e., the time until at least one of them switches to the dormant state. In this paper, we argue that duty cycling time (energy) efficiency, i.e., the ratio of time (energy) employed in ancillary operations when switching from and into deep sleep mode, is an important performance metric too. We present experimental results using Sun SPOT sensors that support our claim and highlight the performance trade-off between connection delay and time (energy) efficiency for a traditional scheme based on independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables. We propose a novel randomized duty cycling scheme based on Markov chains with the goal of (i) reducing the connection delay, while maintaining a given time (energy) efficiency, or (ii) keeping a constant connection delay, while increasing the time (energy) efficiency. The proposed scheme is analyzed mathematically by deriving the time efficiency, connection delay and duration in terms of the time slot length, duty cycle, and cost of set up and tear down operations. Analytical results demonstrate that the Markov chain-based scheme can improve the performance in terms of connection delay without affecting the time efficiency, or vice versa, as opposed to the trade-off observed in traditional schemes. Experimental results using Sun SPOT sensor nodes with the minimum number of operations during transitions from and into deep sleep mode confirm the mathematical analysis of the proposed Markov chain-based randomized scheme.

FPGA accelerators are capable of improving computation and energy efficiency of many applications targeting a cluster of machines. In this work, we focus on an FPGA accelerated cluster system coupled with a wireless network. Comparing with conventional Ethernet based approaches, the proposed system with wireless network enables a light-weight and efficient method for the FPGA devices to exchange information directly. Customisable monitoring facilities are developed to support changing a distributed application dynamically at run time. The N-Body simulation application is used to demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of the proposed system. Experiments show that this approach can achieve up to 4.2 times improvement in latency. By applying the proposed inter-FPGA wireless network to the N-Body application, we achieve enhanced power efficiency while fulfilling thermal constraints in all nodes.

The chemical task in internal combustion engine simulations concerns with the solution of a non-linear stiff system of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) per each cell of a discretization grid representing engine geometry. The computational cost of the above task, when a detailed kinetic scheme is used, is dominating in engine simulations. Due to local physical-chemical conditions, each system of ODEs is characterized by local numerical properties (such as stiffness), therefore local adaptive solvers are usually employed for its efficient solution. We developed an MPI-based combustion parallel solver for efficient solution of the chemical task in engine simulations within parallel environment. In this context, we propose a cell distribution based on a dynamic load balancing algorithm, using a strategy which preserves contiguousness of the computational grid cells. Efficiency of our approach is shown for parallel simulations of realistic Diesel engines, when different sizes of the discretization grid and different operative conditions of the engine are used.

We are witnessing a rapid evolution of HPC node architectures and on-chip parallelism as power and cooling constraints limit increases in microprocessor clock speeds. In this work, we demonstrate a hierarchical approach towards effectively extracting performance for a variety of emerging multicore-based supercomputing platforms. Our examined application is a structured grid-based Lattice Boltzmann computation that simulates homogeneous isotropic turbulence in magnetohydrodynamics. First, we examine sophisticated sequential auto-tuning techniques including loop transformations, virtual vectorization, and use of ISA-specific intrinsics. Next, we present a variety of parallel optimization approaches including programming model exploration (flat MPI, MPI/OpenMP, and MPI/Pthreads), as well as data and thread decomposition strategies designed to mitigate communication bottlenecks. Finally, we evaluate the impact of our hierarchical tuning techniques using a variety of problem sizes via large-scale simulations on state-of-the-art Cray XT4, Cray XE6, and IBM BlueGene/P platforms. Results show that our unique tuning approach improves performance and energy requirements by up to 3.4x using 49,152 cores, while providing a portable optimization methodology for a variety of numerical methods on forthcoming HPC systems.

GTP tunnels are used to transport user data packets in LTE networks over the mobile backhaul between the base stations and core network elements. Maintaining the tunnel as the user equipment moves requires heavy signaling. Moreover, the protocol stack effectively adds headers and thus introduces overhead. In this paper, we design and analyze an LTE architecture and mobility management solution that is based on layer-2 switching. We remove the GTP tunnel and its associated IP/UDP tunnel, and embed user IP packets directly in Ethernet frames within the mobile backhaul. Mobility management within an access network is distributed. We show that the design is very efficient and would simplify the future LTE evolution.

Grids can be considered as dominant platforms for large-scale parallel/distributed computing in science and engineering. Clouds allow users to acquire and release resources on-demand. Next generation computing environments will benefit from the combination of Grid and Cloud paradigms providing frameworks that integrate traditional Grid services with on-demand Cloud services. Nowadays, workflows are the preferred means for the combination of services into added value service chains representing functional business processes or complex scientific experiments. A promising way to manage effectively services composition in a dynamic and heterogenous environment is to make the workflow management framework able to self-adapt at runtime to changes in its environment and provide an uniform resource access mechanism over Grid and Cloud infrastructures. Autonomic workflow management systems can support the runtime modification of workflows with the aim of improving their performance and recover from faults determining and provisioning the appropriate mix of Grid/Cloud services with requested QoS. This paper describes Sunflower an innovative P2P agent-based framework for configuring, enacting, managing and adapting workflows on hybrid Grid-Cloud infrastructures. To orchestrate Grid and Cloud services, Sunflower uses a bio-inspired autonomic choreography model and integrates the scheduling algorithm with a provisioning component that can dynamically launch virtual machines in a Cloud infrastructure to provide on-demand services in peak-load situations.

Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) for sensor network applications aims at providing composable sensor network services supporting functionality within a specific application domain together with tools for service composition, so more complex functionalities can be composed of component services. In a distributed environment, such a scheme works by having a given component service choose other components that provide the data that it needs to perform its service. In this paper, we propose to use real options theory for selecting component services. Real options are designed to reduce the risk associated with an investment by delaying the investment decision for a certain period of time or by allowing for the substitutions of initial investment. Thus, they enhance managerial flexibility and add to the overall value of a project but at the same time they incur certain costs. It is natural to think about activated services as investments, and we apply the switch options subset of the real options methodology to manage the risks of high cost that may result from the low reliability of sensors and sensor networks. Furthermore, we compare our approach with several service selection methods and show the advantage of the option-based methodology.
