This paper introduces a two-stage Linear Logic based program synthesis approach to automatic RESTful web service composition. The Linear Logic theorem proof is applied at both resource and service invocation method levels, which greatly improves the searching efficiency and guarantees the correctness and completeness of the service composition. Furthermore, the process calculus is used as formalism for the composition process, which enables the approach to be executable at the business management level. The process calculus is attached to the Linear Logic inference rules in the style of type theory, so the process model is extracted directly from the complete proof. An example is given to show the extraction of a process model from a Linear Logic proof search.

As the size of data set in cloud increases rapidly, how to process large amount of data efficiently has become a critical issue. MapReduce provides a framework for large data processing and is shown to be scalable and fault-tolerant on commondity machines. However, it has higher learning curve than SQL-like language and the codes are hard to maintain and reuse. On the other hand, traditional SQL-based data processing is familiar to user but is limited in scalability. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach to fill the gap between SQL-based and MapReduce data processing. We develop a data management system for cloud, named SQLMR. SQLMR complies SQL-like queries to a sequence of MapReduce jobs. Existing SQL-based applications are compatible seamlessly with SQLMR and users can manage Tera to PataByte scale of data with SQL-like queries instead of writing MapReduce codes. We also devise a number of optimization techniques to improve the performance of SQLMR. The experiment results demonstrate both performance and scalability advantage of SQLMR compared to MySQL and two NoSQL data processing systems, Hive and HadoopDB.

The question facing us now is to determine what kinds of programmability to place on next generation systems/devices. Research and development on many applications has shown that different kinds of hardware and software programmability succeed for different application classes: powerful, singlethread-optimized CPUs continue to do very well for many applications; the General Purpose GPU is carving a niche in high throughput, parallel floating point codes in addition to its home turf of graphics; the FPGA is particularly good at variable bit-size computations and data steering, as well as parallel distributed control of networks. Future systems may well need all three types of these types of engines, and perhaps interesting mixtures of them. This is particularly true when we deal with the combined goals of optimizing cost, performance and *** this workshop, we will look to the future of the FPGA within these types of 'converged' programmable computing engines, and reflectively ask ourselves: What role can the FPGA play? What future applications in areas such as networking, mobile, and artificial intelligence can be driven by FPGAs? How do FPGAs fit into the architecture realm of CPUs, general purpose GPUs, and DSPs? How should the designer/programme express their intent in the most effective way possible? What are the requirements for a compilation and optimization environment that allow FPGAs to intermix within a heterogeneous and converged future?The intent of this workshop is to open a discussion on these questions. There will be a series of short, invited talks interspersed with free and open discussion.

Monitoring pest insect population is currently a key issue in crop protection. At farm level it is routinely operated by repeated surveys by a human operator of adhesive traps, disseminated through the field, where insects remain stuck when attracted. This is a labor- and time-consuming activity, and it would be of great advantage for farmers to have an affordable system doing this task automatically. This paper illustrates a system based on a distributed imaging device operated through a wireless sensor network that is able to automatically acquire and transmit images of the trapping area to a remote host station. The station evaluates the insect density evolution at different farm sites and produces an alarm when insect density goes over threshold. The network architecture consists of a master node hosted in a PC and a set of client nodes, spread in the fields, that act as monitoring stations. The master node coordinates the network and retrieves from the client nodes the captured images. Zigbee transmission protocol guarantees a low power consumption. Results from real data acquired on a small scale system deployed inside a greenhouse hall hosting a set of Vinca Catharantus roseus plants are shown. During a monitoring period of four weeks the network operated regularly, producing a pest insects population curve fairly correlated to daily counts obtained by visual observations of the trap and therefore demonstrating the feasibility of this approach.
