Advances in Cloud computing opens up many new possibilities for Internet applications developers. Previously, a main concern of Internet applications developers was deployment and hosting of applications, because it required acquisition of a server with a fixed capacity able to handle the expected application peak demand and the installation and maintenance of the whole software infrastructure of the platform supporting the application. Furthermore, server was underutilized because peak traffic happens only at specific times. With the advent of the Cloud, deployment and hosting became cheaper and easier with the use of pay-peruse flexible elastic infrastructure services offered by Cloud providers. Because several Cloud providers are available, each one offering different pricing models and located in different geographic regions, a new concern of application developers is selecting providers and data center locations for applications. However, there is a lack of tools that enable developers to evaluate requirements of large-scale Cloud applications in terms of geographic distribution of both computing servers and user workloads. To fill this gap in tools for evaluation and modeling of Cloud environments and applications, we propose CloudAnalyst. It was developed to simulate large-scale Cloud applications with the purpose of studying the behavior of such applications under various deployment configurations. CloudAnalyst helps developers with insights in how to distribute applications among Cloud infrastructures and value added services such as optimization of applications performance and providers incoming with the use of Service Brokers.

Cloud computing environments facilitate applications by providing virtualized resources that can be provisioned dynamically. However, users are charged on a pay-per-use basis. User applications may incur large data retrieval and execution costs when they are scheduled taking into account only the 'execution time'. In addition to optimizing execution time, the cost arising from data transfers between resources as well as execution costs must also be taken into account. In this paper, we present a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based heuristic to schedule applications to cloud resources that takes into account both computation cost and data transmission cost. We experiment with a workflow application by varying its computation and communication costs. We compare the cost savings when using PSO and existing 'Best Resource Selection' (BRS) algorithm. Our results show that PSO can achieve: a) as much as 3 times cost savings as compared to BRS, and b) good distribution of workload onto resources.

The anticipated uptake of Cloud computing, built on well-established research in Web Services, networks, utility computing, distributed computing and virtualisation, will bring many advantages in cost, flexibility and availability for service users. These benefits are expected to further drive the demand for Cloud services, increasing both the Cloud's customer base and the scale of Cloud installations. This has implications for many technical issues in Service Oriented Architectures and Internet of Services (IoS)-type applications;including fault tolerance, high availability and scalability. Central to these issues is the establishment of effective load balancing techniques. It is clear the scale and complexity of these systems makes centralized assignment of jobs to specific servers infeasible;requiring an effective distributed solution. This paper investigates three possible distributed solutions proposed for load balancing;approaches inspired by Honeybee Foraging Behaviour, Biased Random Sampling and Active Clustering. copy;2010 IEEE.

In this paper, it presents an effective caching algorithm based on random access with the finite storage size in distributed server architecture for networked video services. Under the general video traffic condition, it is observed that the storage size and total popular contents of edge video server affect the performance of the total video sever system, and channel bandwidth between edge video servers and central video servers also is the key factor. To consider this fact, we design an effective edge caching algorithm to select the positions of content based on user random access in distributed server's architecture. Finally, experimental results are provided to show the superior performance of the proposed algorithm.

In recent years network coding has attracted significant attention in telecommunication. The benefits of network coding to a communication network include the increased throughput as well as secure data transmission. The purpose of this work is to design secure linear network coding against wiretap attack. The problem is to maximize the transmission data rate of multiple unicast streams between a pair of source and destination nodes, under the condition of satisfying the weakly secure requirements. Different from most existing research on network coding that designs the network coding scheme based on a given network topology, we will consider the integrated network topology design and network coding design. Such an integrated approach has not been reported by other researchers. In this paper, we formally introduce the problem, prove the problem is computational intractable, and then develop efficient heuristic algorithms. We first try to find the transmission topology that is suitable for network coding. Based on the topology, we design linear network coding scheme that is weakly secure. We conduct simulations to show that the proposed algorithms can achieve good performance.

Considering the requirement to build space and ground integrated training, mission command and decision-making space flight simulator, with the development of manned space engineering, a standards-based HLA astronaut training, command and decision-making integrated space and ground simulator distributed architecture was presented. Firstly the system structure composed of the spacecraft, telemetry stations, command and control centers and ground-based training simulator is introduced. space and ground data link nodes and the data conversion process were elaborated. Then the distributed interactive implementation strategies between simulation data and flight data under three modes of space and ground online, offline and mixed-mode are analyzed. The causes and solutions of difficulties in application of the system are analyzed, discussed and tested. The system will further improve the existing simulator architecture, based on real flight data, the super-real-time flight missions is forecasted and fit, also can provide an important guarantee for collaborative mission training and real-time command and decision-making. © 2010 IEEE.

Social networks such as Facebook and Secondlife are popular. Wireless devices abound from affluent countries to developing countries. Social networks need wide area Internet support. Wireless interfaces offer ad hoc networking capability, without the need for infrastructure support. Web on Demand (WoD) aims to bridge the gap between ad hoc social networks (people in close proximity with shared interests) and ad hoc networking. A key requirement for WoD is transparent connection management. This paper makes three contributions: First, an abstraction called VirtualConnection for transparent connection creation and migration, with socket-like API;second, an implementation on iPAQs (Windows Mobile) as a user level library, and proof of efficacy of using this abstraction for realizing WoD;third, evaluations to establish the performance of this abstraction. In particular, we show the performance degradation due to virtualizing the connection is negligible.

The management of the magnanimous spatial data needs the distributed cooperative GIS platform. This paper proposed the Peer To Peer and Cooperating computing Hybrid Discovering Model of distributed Geospatial Information. Based on the (Spatial Resource Discovery Agent (SRDA) and ordinary neighbor node, Combined with Spatial data model of MAPGIS7.0, this article brings up the geographic structure query language in P2P network (P2PGSQL), and has designed the interpreter of P2PGSQL. In the Peer To Peer and Cooperating computing Hybrid Discovering Model, this paper has designed the algorithms that construct the distributed hash table and decrease the delay. By discovering and performing the potential swaps that are beneficial to the match between overlay and physical network, it can reduce the average latency and improve the performance of the system. Based on the P2P Cooperating computing Hybrid Discovering Model, this article has given the method of the P2PGSQL in grid environment and built the mapping model of the global spatial query sentence to the local query sentence. With constituting a global spatial data resource catalog to record the distributing information of all spatial database on each node, P2PGSQL has backed up effective expression of spatial database management mission in grid environment. Hence, P2PGSQL can sustain the query of distribute spatial data in grid environment. This article has extended the grid spatial relation operation (Intersection, Union, Difference) and synthesized operation (Length, Buffer, intersecting region) and so on. The P2PGSQL can reduce the quantity of spatial data transmitting among nodes and enhance the capacity of parallel operation. At the same time, P2PGSQL can also sustain multi-spatial data model by the extension of structure data on the data type. At the end, an experimental instance of P2PGSQL has been carried out based on mapgis7.0 platform.

Demands for efficient and effective utilization of computing resources have derived distributed computing systems of the large scaled such as Grid for scientific computing and Cloud for utility computing. In these distributed computing systems the total capacity of consolidated storages should expand as the amount of user data grows. The user's data are necessarily kept in the distributed computing system such as the Grid and the Cloud, which some users don't allow the system to. In this work, an auxiliary storage subsystem is proposed to provide external storages to the distributed computing system. The storage subsystem lets the iSCSI devices be connected to the distributed computing system as needed. As iSCSI is a recent, standard, and widely deployed protocol for storage networking, the subsystem is able to accommodate many types of storages outside of the distributed computing system. The proposed subsystem could transmit data by streams attaining high bit rate of the network capacity in the experiment.

This paper proposes distributed data acquisition system based on Personal Digital Assistant that can process data by calling the Web Service. The system implements distributed data processing by calling the Web Service. Lots of experiments are conducted on it in several wildlife monitoring sites in Zhejiang Province, the result shows that it is effective and can meet the needs of data collection in the wild. © 2010 IEEE.
