Efficient load balancing is essential for distributed systems to have outstanding performance and scalability. This study compares the load balancing strategies of two popular distributed application frameworks, gRPC and Apache Thrift. The features of each algorithm are examined, along with their advantages and disadvantages. To give a helpful evaluation, the performance of these algorithms is tested using key factors like throughput, latency, resource utilisation, and scalability. The comparison looks at the trade-offs involved in selecting different algorithms for distributed system load balancing and identifies the scenarios in which one method might be more suitable.

The tradeoff between scalability and consistency has been addressed by deploying distributed applications in the cloud. However, cloud-based applications penalize performance with the unavoidable latency and jitter resulting from the geographical distance between clients and application servers. Fog computing architectures mitigate this impact by deploying state fragments and computing power on surrogate servers at the network edge. To improve performance, one must deploy each fragment of the application state at the most convenient surrogate and maintain an efficient coordination when manipulating state stored in multiple locations. This paper formalizes a two-tier view synchronous group communication model for Fog computing to improve performance of large scale mobile distributed applications and evaluates it using data derived from a real dataset.

Multi-access Edge computing (MEC) is a central piece of 5G telecommunication systems and is essential to satisfy the challenging low-latency demands of future applications. MEC provides a cloud computing platform at the edge of the radio access network that developers can utilize for their applications. In [1] we argued that edge computing should be transparent to clients and introduced a solution to that end. This paper presents how to efficiently implement such a transparent approach, leveraging Software-Defined networking. For high performance and scalability, our architecture focuses on three aspects: (i) a modular architecture that can easily be distributed onto multiple switches/controllers, (ii) multiple filter stages to avoid screening traffic not intended for the edge, and (iii) several strategies to keep the number of flows low to make the best use of the precious flow table memory in hardware switches. A performance evaluation is shown, with results from a real edge/fog testbed.

distributed radar systems are becoming increasingly important, and the accuracy of time synchronization between multiple radar sites plays a crucial role. The measurement accuracy of clock deviation and clock drift directly affects the synchronization accuracy between local and remote clocks, thereby influencing the accuracy of time signal transmission in fiber-optic time transfer. In order to improve the timing accuracy of the fiber-optic time synchronization bidirectional comparison method, this paper mathematically models the entire process using the Kalman filtering algorithm. It takes into account the clock deviation, clock drift, and clock drift rate between the remote and local ends, and assigns different weights to the observed values and predicted values to obtain a more accurate clock deviation. The model is continuously iterated and corrected. Both predictive and observational models were established and simulation experiments were conducted. Through simulation design experiments, the effectiveness of the Kalman filtering algorithm in fiber-optic time transfer was verified, optimizing the clock deviation from 1.5 ns to a maximum of not exceeding 0.5 ns. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

When all the qubits needed for solving a problem are not located in a single quantum computer, qubits from different quantum computers can be collectively utilized. In this case, quantum communication is needed for the multiple quantum computers to communicate with each other. Several studies address the problem of minimizing the number of quantum communications when evaluating a general quantum circuit. The solutions proposed typically involve solving some intractable problems. In this paper, we show that we can obtain much better solutions when we focus on solving specific problems (instead of seeking solutions for generic circuits). Specifically, we consider several fundamental quantum circuits and identify communication protocols that need a much smaller number of communication steps than those offered by generic solutions. Our work is in line with traditional parallel and distributed computing research where typically scientists focus on solving specific problems (such as sorting, matrix multiplication, network flow, etc.) in a parallel or distributed setting.

In this paper, data structures for reducing redundancy of routing information on the distributed key-value store based on order preserving linear hashing and Skip Graph with the load balancing method are proposed and evaluated. In this system, data are divided by order preserving linear hashing and Skip Graph is used for overlay network. For load balancing, by storing many Skip Graph nodes in one physical node, any highest-load Skip Graph can be divided. By this method, load balancing can be done. But the number of Skip Graph nodes becomes very many and redundant routing information exists. But this redundant routing information has regularity. In this paper, two types of data structure for reducing redundant routing elements are proposed. They are tree structure and array structure. By calculating space for them and searching time, the proposed data structures are experimentally evaluated. © 2022 IEEE.

Modern embedded systems-autonomous vehicle-to-vehicle communication, smart cities, and military Joint All-Domain Operations-feature increasingly heterogeneous distributed components. As a result, existing communication methods, tightly coupled with specific networking layers and individual applications, can no longer balance the flexibility of modern data distribution with the traditional constraints of embedded systems. To address this problem, this paper presents a domain-specific language, designed around the Representational State Transfer (REST) architecture, most famously used on the web. Our language, called the Communication Language for Embedded Systems (CLES), supports both traditional point-to-point data communication and allocation of decentralized distributed tasks. To meet the traditional constraints of embedded execution, CLES's novel runtime allocates decentralized distributed tasks across a heterogeneous network of embedded devices, overcoming limitations of centralized management and limited operating system integration. We evaluated CLES with performance micro-benchmarks, implementation of distributed stochastic gradient descent, and by applying it to design versatile stateless services for vehicle-to-vehicle communication and military Joint All-Domain Command and Control, thus meeting the data distribution needs of realistic cyber-physical embedded systems.

Tremendous research efforts have been made in conceptualizing 6G mobile wireless networks to support unprecedented scenarios with extremely diverse and challenging delay and error-rate bounded quality-of-services (QoS) requirements for ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC), especially for cell-edge users. However, QoS performance is greatly limited by the computation capacity and finite battery capacity. To address this issue, mobile edge computing (MEC) has been developed by enabling mobile users to offload partial or complete computation-intensive tasks to MEC servers for computing. In addition, leveraging the significant improvements in coverage rate and spectral efficiency, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) integrated MEC systems, which smartly reconfigure and design wireless propagation environments by bypassing blockage of line-of-sight (LOS) communications, can avoid service starvation of cell-edge users while supporting QoS for URLLC. However, how to statistically upper-bound both delay and error rate for URLLC in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-UAV/IRS-based MEC systems still remains a challenging problem, especially when considering short-packet communications, such as finite blocklength coding (FBC). To overcome these difficulties, in this paper we propose FBC-based joint beamforming and UAV trajectory optimization schemes to support statistical delay and error-rate bounded QoS for URLLC with MEC. First, we develop MIMO-UAV/IRS-based 3D wireless channel models using FBC. Second, we formulate and solve the e-effective energy-efficiency maximization problems by converting non-convex problems into convex problems in both single-user and multiple-user scenarios. Finally, the obtained numerical analyses validate and evaluate our developed MIMO-UAV/IRS-based schemes.

Software-Defined networking (SDN) is a networking paradigm that has the potential to revolutionize the way we develop and operate network infrastructures. SDN enables network engineers to quickly monitor networks, centrally manage networks, and quickly and accurately detect malicious traffic and link failures. In addition to its flexibility, SDN is also susceptible to various attacks like distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) that can bring down the entire network. In recent years, Deep Learning (DL) approaches have been applied for reliable and highly accurate traffic anomaly detection. Therefore, this paper proposes a method based on DL to classify the benign traffic from the DDoS attack traffic. The major contribution of this paper is to propose a novel hybrid DL method to perform the classification. In addition, we compare different deep learning methods using attack severity, which is integrated into the standard metrics to differentiate the quality of the results of DL methods. The attack severity will be calculated using an appropriate weighting of undiscovered intrusions (FN and FP) discovered during the testing phase. Besides, various DDoS attack detection research projects employ public datasets that are not specific to the SDN environment. We propose a method to determine the adequacy of a selected dataset using two proposed metrics based on quality and quantity conformity evaluation.

Programmable networks have received tremendous attention recently. Apart from exciting network innovations, in-network computing has been explored as a means to accelerate a variety of distributed systems concerns, by leveraging programmable network devices. In this paper, we extend in-network computing to an important class of applications called deep neural network (DNN) serving. In particular, we propose to run DNN inferences in the network data plane in a distributed fashion and make our programmable network a powerful accelerator for DNN serving. We demonstrate the feasibility of this idea through a case study with a real-world DNN on a typical data center network architecture.
