The anticipated uptake of Cloud computing, built on well-established research in Web Services, networks, utility computing, distributedcomputing and virtualisation, will bring many advantages in cost, flexibility and availability for service users. These benefits are expected to further drive the demand for Cloud services, increasing both the Cloud's customer base and the scale of Cloud installations. This has implications for many technical issues in Service Oriented Architectures and Internet of Services (IoS)-type applications; including fault tolerance, high availability and scalability. Central to these issues is the establishment of effective load balancing techniques. It is clear the scale and complexity of these systems makes centralized assignment of jobs to specific servers infeasible; requiring an effective distributed solution. This paper investigates three possible distributed solutions proposed for load balancing; approaches inspired by Honeybee Foraging Behaviour, Biased Random Sampling and Active Clustering.

Information on the ratings of several features of items can be deployed to improve the quality of recommendations in recommender systems by incorporating them into similarity calculation between any two users or two items. However, the incremental information of these features has important impacts on recommender systems. For example, the complexity of similarity calculation is increased and more resources are consumed during the process for generating recommendations. In this paper, we propose several techniques by using this information to provide relevant recommendations and to reduce the complexity in similarity computation by directly matching between preferences of user and the strength of item features.

Efficient IT tools are required for synchronizing decision makers, developer teams and production planners. In this paper we present the design and evaluation of our virtual workspace for supporting the collaboration of team members in geographically distributed locations. Our contribution focuses on the support for real-time collaboration in the design and engineering field but addresses also some aspects of offline collaboration.

In Internet applications, Web object prefetching is a commonly used and quite effective algorithmic approach to reduce user perceived delays. While a separate concept, prefetching is closely related to caching and they are often blended together in Web algorithms. In this paper, we give a review of Web prefetching models and algorithms, categorize them into groups based on their design principles, and compare their functionalities and performance. We then proposed a new prefetching algorithm that is based on the Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) of neural networks. The new model uses the bottom-up and top-down weights of the cluster-URL connections obtained from a modified ART1 algorithm to make prefecthing decisions.

Most classification studies are done by using all the objects data. It is expected to classify objects by using some subsets data in the total data. A rough set based reduct is a minimal subset of features, which has almost the same discernible power as the entire conditional features. Here, we propose a greedy algorithm to compute a set of rough set reducts which is followed by the k-nearest neighbor to classify documents. To improve the classification performance, reducts-kNN with confidence was developed. These proposed rough set reduct based methods are compared with the classification by AdaBoost and SVM(Support Vector Machine) methods. Experiments have been conducted on some benchmark datasets from the Reuters 21578 data set.

In this paper we propose the BASAD (Business And Software Architecture co-Design) method to facilitate alleviating the difficulty of software architecture design and achieving the high-level business goals. Pervasive systems are increasingly being designed using a service-oriented approach where services are distributed across wireless devices of varying capabilities. Service orchestration is a simple and popular method to coordinate web-based services but introduces a single point of failure and lacks the flexibility to cope with the greater variability of pervasive environments. Choreography in contrast advocates explicitly modelling systems as interacting peers that conform to rules of interaction. Choreography offers greater reliability and flexibility but leads to systems that are much harder to validate. In this paper we describe a novel intermediate approach, where given a logically centralised service orchestration, we automatically generate a distributed implementation that correctly enforces the orchestration behaviour. Our system handles all the synchronisation and consensus issues and ensures correctness. The system also incorporates a number of abstractions for grouping pervasive peers and coordinating pervasive peer-to-peer interactions.

Many believe that Cloud will reshape the entire ICT industry as a revolution. In this paper, we aim to pinpoint the challenges and issues of Cloud computing. We first discuss two related computing paradigms - Service-Oriented computing and Grid computing, and their relationships with Cloud computing. We then identify several challenges from the Cloud computing adoption perspective. Last, we will highlight the Cloud interoperability issue that deserves substantial further research and development.
