Software engineering education has been recognized as an important challenge in computer science undergraduate programs. Instruction in such area requires not only to deliver theoretical knowledge, but also to perform practical experiences that allow students to assimilate and apply such knowledge. This paper introduces a computer-supported Collaborative and distributed Learning Activity (CODILA) that has been used to allow undergraduate students to acquire not only particular knowledge on software engineering, but also specific competencies or skills to collaborate in a distributed development team. The article also presents two experiences in which CODILA was applied. Such experiences involved students and instructors from five Latin American Universities. The obtained results were satisfactory and indicate this collaborative learning activity could be appropriate to address the instructional process in other disciplines.

Context-aware services need to acquire context information from heterogeneous context sources. The diversity of service requirements posts challenges on context provisioning systems as well as their programming models. This paper proposes COPAL (COntext Provisioning for ALl) - an adaptive approach to context provisioning. COPAL is at first a runtime middleware, which provides loose-coupling between context and its processing. The component architecture of COPAL ensures that new context processing functions can be added dynamically. A set of context processing patterns are proposed to customize context attributes and compose context provisioning schemes. The COPAL components and models are reflected in a Domain Specific Language (DSL), which can further reduce the development efforts of context provisioning using automatic code generation. A motivating scenario is used throughout the paper to illustrate COPAL approach.

Topology control tries to provide more spatial reuse and power conservation while keeping network connectivity. Some topology control algorithms try to provide more energy conservation by sleeping the redundant nodes. This paper presents a learning automata based algorithm to determine whether the node has to sleep or not. Just few efforts have focused on the issue of topology control with mobility. We have simulated our proposed algorithm in both of the static and dynamic networks. Our results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms CEC, which is a well known algorithm.

In order to integrate chemical process operation system effectively, a web service based system information integration approach is presented in this paper. The application technologies of web service are introduced for chemical process information integration. Besides, the reality steps of information integration are introduced according to the proposed approach functions. Compared to the traditional distributed integration technology, the advances and features of the approach are discussed. A case study of a mini chemical operation platform is used to verify the practicability and validity of proposed information integration approach.

In the past few years, many locality-based approaches have been proposed to reduce cross-ISPs traffic caused by BitTorrent (BT). However, most of these approaches have taken such an assumption that there are always plenty of peers in client's neighborhood, which results in inefficiently reducing cross-ISPs traffic. In this paper, we study the characteristics of geographical distribution of peers in BT swarms. By measuring and analyzing more than 2 000 .torrent file swarms of BT in 5-month, the geographical distributions of peers is found to follow Zipf-like law both in country level and AS level. More specifically, the distributions of peers exhibit a non-Zipf head, but Zipf tail. Our work shows that the characteristics of geographical distributions of peers can be used to better understand and answer questions related to traffic optimization of BT.

Various promising distributing computing paradigms such as Grids, P2P and Clouds have emerged over Internet. How to build the trust relationship among principals in such an open computing environment has become an important issue. Automated trust negotiation (ATN) approach aims to gradually build trust relationship between strangers through the interactively disclosing of credentials and security policies. In this paper, we propose a hybrid tree model which can embed both policies and credential sets in the tree nodes, and is able to describe fine-grained security policy with attributes or negotiation context information. Based on the hybrid tree model, we design a negotiation tree building algorithm. We have designed a HiTrust System and experimental results demonstrate that the HiTrust service has a good scalability.

Due to the geographical distribution, different cognitive capacity, and different domain competency of workers or learners, many misunderstandings can occur during distributed remote collaboration, leading to inefficient discussions and undesired results. To make remote collaboration more efficient and dependable, enriching cyberspace through adaptively utilizing is proposed and evaluated. This assesses situations of remote users through information fusion of multiple biological sensors and the related contexts such as user profiles. Transmitting and using such information, the system adaptively supports the distributed remote collaboration by stressing, warning, and presenting keywords/summaries in multimedia. Effects of presenting keywords/summaries adaptively depending on situations and cognitive profiles of remote members are evaluated as to the decrease of not-/misunderstanding possibilities during the explanation on the Cyberspace. The evaluation demonstrates the feasibility and usefulness of the proposed method.

In distributed WiMAX Mesh Networks (DWMN), a joint solution with FEBA (Fair End-to-end Bandwidth Allocation) and DRR (Deficit Round Robin) can be used to achieve high end-to-end throughput fairness. Even then, the higher the number of hops a traffic flow traverses, the longer becomes the end-to-end delay of the traffic flow. This will result in serious unfairness of service quality among real-time traffic flows with different path length since they are delay-sensitive. In this paper, an improved fair scheduling mechanism based on the previous joint solution is proposed to deal with the above-mentioned problem by assigning a greater scheduling weight to the relayed traffic flows. Moreover, a new fairness index is defined to evaluate the service quality fairness of traffic flows. The proposed mechanism is compared with the previous joint solution by simulation. The results indicate that our proposed mechanism can provide better service quality fairness among real-time traffic flows without decreasing their throughput fairness. And it is also effective to improve the service quality fairness and throughput fairness of non-real-time traffic flows when the network is under a certain load.

A major problem in mobile computing is the optimal replication and location of data files in the Grid sites, in order to improve and maintain over time a high overall throughput of Grid jobs that access files. Therefore, a Grid optimization service should be able to dynamically modify the geographic distribution of data files, triggering file replication and location, according to the variation over time of the sites where data is highly requested. In this document we propose a new decentralized replica location method based on Huffman encode in mobile Grids. In this method replica location index information are spread on index nodes according to the locality of the index nodes or the frequency of being accessed of the index nodes based on Huffman encode. Meanwhile it employs replica location nodes to support local query for local replicas. This method is simple to use and it has locality.

The lack of license management schemes in distributed environments is becoming a major obstacle for the commercial adoption of Grid or Cloud infrastructures. In this paper, we present a complete license management architecture that enables a pay-per-use license management which can be deployed together with an on-demand computing scenario. Our architecture enables authenticated access to a remote license server. The license management architecture can be deployed in any distributed environment. It supports existing client/server based software license management tools (for example FlexNet Publisher). This allows an easy transition from current software license business models which support only a local license management towards business models which support license management in distributed environments.
