Reducing the power consumption in integrated circuits will require the use of several techniques, many of which depends on accurate on-chip temperature measurement. Simultaneously, power consumption can be reduced by using smaller integration scales of System-on-Chip (SoC). This will require a comprehensive solution to the ensuing more frequent problems of reliability-related events. This paper introduces the use of an on-chip sensor network to monitor reliability-related parameter and to adapt local chip components to ensure continuing efficient operation with reduced power consumption. The sensor network design is constrained to present a negligible footprint in terms of the chip internal bandwidth use, power consumption and number and area of integrated components. In this context, this paper considers the problem of monitoring the time evolution of the complete chip thermal profile. Different distributed sensing and source compression schemes that leverage on the physical properties of heat propagation and networking of sensors are evaluated in terms of bandwidth and power consumption saving potential. Simulation results show the potential for these techniques to provide useful savings in on-chip communication bandwidth. Considering strict implementation complexity constraints, distributed source coding through binning is the evaluated technique that shows best performance.

Next Generation Wireless Systems (NGWS) include co-existence of current wireless technologies such as WLANs, WiMAX, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). The important and challenging issue in NGWS is seamless handoff during the mobility of mobile node between different integrated networks. In this article, we propose a received signal strength measurement based handoff technique to improve handoff probability. By calculating the speed of MN (Mobile Node) and signaling delay information we try to take the right decision of handoff initiation time. Our theoretical analysis and simulation results show that by taking the proper decision for handoff we can effectively reduce false handoff initiation probability and unnecessary traffic load causing packet loss and call blocking.

For a long time, life sciences were restricted to look at animal habitats only post-factum. Pervasive computing puts us in the novel position to gain live views. In this paper we present BurrowView, an application that tracks the movement of rats in their natural habitat and reconstructs the underground tunnel system. To make reliable statements, special consideration has been taken with regard to the information quality. Our system is able to reconstruct paths up to a resolution of 20 cm, the length of a rat without its tail.

Intrusion detection and response systems (IPSs) for protecting against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks will beneflit significantly if all the routers within each autonomous system (AS) are capable of detection and response in addition to sampling. However, DDoS detection and response will incur high storage and processing overhead if each router does redundant detection and response tasks. Many overlay communication protocols have been introduced in the literature to achieve coordination among the routers but they generally have high communication overheads. Furthermore, DDoS detection and response requires that all the flows intended to the same destination be analyzed together in order to efficiently capture the correlation between them. In order to do that, current approaches centrally collect all the sampled data and analyze them, which also increases the communication overhead. In this paper, we present a collaborative approach to distribute the sampling, detection, and response responsibilities among all the routers within the AS in such a way that each router can detect and respond to DDoS attacks. Our proposed approach achieves coordination among all the routers in the network to eliminate redundant sampling, detection, and response tasks without exploiting any specific communication protocol. We propose an optimal assignment of disjoint flows to each of the routers within the ASs in such a way that all the flows destined for the same host will be sampled, analyzed, and properly responded at the same router. Each router can thus capture the correlation between flows destined for a specific destination.

This paper is on failure detectors to solve the consensus problem in asynchronous systems made up of anonymous processes prone to crash and connected by asynchronous reliable channels. Anonymity means that any two processes cannot be distinguished one from the other: they have no name and execute the same code. The paper has several contributions. It first introduces two new classes of failures detectors, denoted AP and AΩ, and presents an AP-based algorithm and an AΩ-based algorithm that solve the consensus problem despite the three computational adversaries that are asynchrony, failures and anonymity. Then, the paper shows that, in crash-prone non-anonymous systems, (a) AP and the class of perfect failure detectors (denoted P) are equivalent, and (b) AΩ and the class of eventual leader failure detectors (denoted Ω) are also equivalent. Finally, the paper addresses the question of the weakest failure detector to solve consensus in an asynchronous crash-prone anonymous system. In non-anonymous systems, the class P of perfect failure detectors is strictly stronger than the class Ω of eventual leader failure detectors that has been shown to be the weakest failure detector class for consensus in asynchronous crashprone system. Quite surprisingly, the paper shows that their anonymous counterparts cannot be compared. Hence, while Ω is the weakest failure detector class to solve consensus in non-anonymous systems, it is possible that there are several (hence incomparable) classes of weakest failure detectors for this problem in anonymous systems.

Energy efficient multicast routing is one of the fundamental problems in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Previous work has shown that when the goal is to find multicast trees with minimum transmission cost, the problem becomes NP-complete. In this work, we present a heuristic distributed minimum transmission multicast routing protocol (MTMRP) for WSNs. By introducing the biased backoff scheme and taking advantage of the broadcast nature of wireless communication, MTMRP chooses the forwarding routes which can connect more multicast receivers. Moreover, MTMRP introduces a path handover scheme, which can prune redundant routes for multicast routing. As a result, the multicast transmission cost is reduced in a distributed manner. We conduct extensive evaluations to study the performance of the proposed MTMRP compared with existing protocols. Simulation results demonstrate that our scheme effectively improves the multicast routing energy efficiency.

Cognitive radio is an emerging technique to improve the utilization of the scarce radio frequency spectrum, which is characterized by the dynamic spectrum access of the secondary users coexisting with the primary users. In cognitive radio network, secondary users strive for temporally unused spectrum access opportunities offered by primary services; as a result, the opportunistic nature of the spectrum utilization among secondary users leads to great threats to primary users. Considering the fact that the cognitive ability of secondary users in cognitive radio network are similar to the intelligent behaviors of ant colonies in biological environment. Therefore, in this paper, the dynamic spectrum access problem is modeled as an adaptive task assignment in ant colonies. Furthermore, we propose to use the ACO algorithm to assign a set of secondary users to a given number of available spectrum bands owned by a special primary service subject to minimal cost constraint. So the basic idea of the ACO algorithm is to let each secondary user distributively select a spectrum band with a good enough quality and without interfering with the primary users, meanwhile minimize spectrum cost of the primary service. Performance evaluation has also been conducted and the results recorded after 100 runs have shown the optimal spectrum assignment.

Advances in Cloud computing opens up many new possibilities for Internet applications developers. Previously, a main concern of Internet applications developers was deployment and hosting of applications, because it required acquisition of a server with a fixed capacity able to handle the expected application peak demand and the installation and maintenance of the whole software infrastructure of the platform supporting the application. Furthermore, server was underutilized because peak traffic happens only at specific times. With the advent of the Cloud, deployment and hosting became cheaper and easier with the use of pay-peruse flexible elastic infrastructure services offered by Cloud providers. Because several Cloud providers are available, each one offering different pricing models and located in different geographic regions, a new concern of application developers is selecting providers and data center locations for applications. However, there is a lack of tools that enable developers to evaluate requirements of large-scale Cloud applications in terms of geographic distribution of both computing servers and user workloads. To fill this gap in tools for evaluation and modeling of Cloud environments and applications, we propose CloudAnalyst. It was developed to simulate large-scale Cloud applications with the purpose of studying the behavior of such applications under various deployment configurations. CloudAnalyst helps developers with insights in how to distribute applications among Cloud infrastructures and value added services such as optimization of applications performance and providers incoming with the use of Service Brokers.

Data streaming has become an important paradigm for the real-time processing of continuous data flows in domains such as finance, telecommunications, networking. Some applications in these domains require to process massive data flows that current technology is unable to manage, that is, streams that, even for a single query operator, require the capacity of potentially many machines. Research efforts on data streaming have mainly focused on scaling in the number of queries or query operators, but overlooked the scalability issue with respect to the stream volume. In this paper, we present StreamCloud a large scale data streaming system for processing large data stream volumes. We focus on how to parallelize continuous queries to obtain a highly scalable data streaming infrastructure. StreamCloud goes beyond the state of the art by using a novel parallelization technique that splits queries into subqueries that are allocated to independent sets of nodes in a way that minimizes the distribution overhead. StreamCloud is implemented as a middleware and is highly independent of the underlying data streaming engine. We explore and evaluate different strategies to parallelize data streaming and tackle with the main bottlenecks and overheads to achieve scalability. The paper presents the system design, implementation and a thorough evaluation of the scalability of the fully implemented system.
