Location-based routing intends to send packets toward geographic direction of destination. For this, source nodes needs to known about destination position via a location service. Whereas the main concept of ad hoc networking is being independent from an infrastructure, applying a distribution algorithm has been a key design principle for a location service. Destruction of single nodes shouldn't lead to disruption of location service. Moreover, scalability is a desirable characteristic for large networks. So, we offered a distributed and fault tolerant location service method (DFLS) for ad hoc networks in this paper. This method is a hierarchical and explicit Quorum-based location service method. In this method, location servers in each cluster have abstract information about other clusters. So, this method will have response time similar to flat methods. But, it is similar to hierarchical methods in terms of implementation complexity. Evaluation show that this method (DFLS), compared to the previous methods, decreased the response time to location queries and control overheads, also it increased fault tolerance and packet delivery rate.

In recent years network coding has attracted significant attention in telecommunication. The benefits of network coding to a communication network include the increased throughput as well as secure data transmission. The purpose of this work is to design secure linear network coding against wiretap attack. The problem is to maximize the transmission data rate of multiple unicast streams between a pair of source and destination nodes, under the condition of satisfying the weakly secure requirements. Different from most existing research on network coding that designs the network coding scheme based on a given network topology, we will consider the integrated network topology design and network coding design. Such an integrated approach has not been reported by other researchers. In this paper, we formally introduce the problem, prove the problem is computational intractable, and then develop efficient heuristic algorithms. We first try to find the transmission topology that is suitable for network coding. Based on the topology, we design linear network coding scheme that is weakly secure. We conduct simulations to show that the proposed algorithms can achieve good performance.

We consider the problem of optimally allocating a given total storage budget in a distributed storage system. A source has a data object which it can code and store over a set of storage nodes; it is allowed to store any amount of data in each storage node, subject to a given total storage budget constraint. A data collector subsequently attempts to recover the original data object by accessing a random fixed-size subset of these storage nodes. Successful recovery of the data object occurs when the total amount of coded data in this subset of storage nodes is at least the size of the original data object. The goal is to determine the amount of data to store in each storage node so that the probability of successful recovery is maximized. We solve this problem in the high recovery probability regime. Our results can be applied to a variety of distributed storage systems, including delay tolerant networks (DTNs), content delivery networks (CDNs), and sensor networks.

Structured overlay networks are widely used as platforms for distributed systems. However, in a high churn situation, it is highly costly to maintain the structure and service availability of an overlay network because there is a limitation in churn handling. Several cooperation mechanisms among overlay networks are proposed to improve service availability of overlay networks in a high-churn situation. Several cooperation mechanisms are proposed among overlay networks. The cooperation mechanisms can group structured overlay networks to simplify routing functions. However, the existing mechanisms do not consider managing churn information among overlay networks. In this paper, we propose a new framework that can share states of the nodes and spread churn information to neighbor nodes among different overlay networks. Using our framework, we are able to maintain each overlay network effectively and improve the reachability of messages under churn. We evaluate our framework with Chord, Kademlia, and Pastry. Our framework improves the detection time of churn by about 30% and decreases the stabilization messages by about 30-40%. We discuss combinatorial effects of the sharing state of the nodes among different overlay networks.

A novel sensor network configuration is introduced for traffic surveillance in Intelligent Transportation Systems. distributed sensor nodes based on passive acoustic transducers are non intrusively/obtrusively deployed at motorway road-side to provide real-time traffic data collection for dynamic queue/jam detection. The system is capable to provide a complete real-time picture of traffic flow at unprecedented time/space scale. The infrastructure is based on a stand-alone, install-and-forget architecture, featuring an energy efficient protocol for sensor networking and providing connectivity to back-end computing environment via TCP/IP over UMTS. Extensive experimental demonstration is given for long term operation on a motorway test site.

In 2006, Jun et al presented a novel non-interactive verifiable secret sharing scheme constructed by Shamir's secret sharing scheme for secure multi-party communication protocol in distributed networks. In their scheme, the Dealer only publishes one commitment for verification. The efficiency of verification for each share doesn't fall as the augment of the threshold and the security of the verifiable secret sharing scheme is based on the intractability of computing discrete logarithm. So they demonstrated that their scheme can efficiently withstand not only the deceptive behavior between the Dealer and participants but among participants. In this paper, we analysis the security of their scheme and point out that their scheme couldn't resist the deceptive behavior like they claimed.

As recent experiments have shown, current Grid infrastructures are highly vulnerable against root exploits. In these attacks legitimate Grid user credentials were used to compromise vulnerable Grid head and worker nodes. Any such attack against a distributed working environment is critical. However, in the Grid it is particularly devastating, attacks against the head node affect unencrypted Grid proxy certificates. Using these, an attacker can act with the permissions of the original owner, undermining the Grid security concept. Even after the original attack has been detected and the affected systems have been sanitized, the attacker is still in possession of the stolen proxy. In previous work we introduced an auditing infrastructure that gives Grid users a way to reconstruct usage of their delegated credentials and detect their possibly abuse . We achieve this by including an X.509 certificate extension in a proxy credential signed by the Grid user – making the users request to track credential usage tamper-proof. In this paper, we extend the auditing infrastructure by a novel encryption aware watchdog, which can detect proxy certificate misuse even in the face of complete root compromise of all accessible Grid resources. It correlates network communication in the Grid with the auditing infrastructure and can thus detect proxy certificate misuse and tampering with the auditing framework.

Summary form only given: Networked sensors and actuators are increasingly pervasive in our daily lives, from tracking inventory in warehouses to monitoring movement of environmental pollutants and helping elderly living a more independent life. The data collected by the sensors needs to be distilled into higher level information and knowledge that must be promptly acted upon by autonomous controllers or humans. The scale of these systems-sometimes called Internet of Things (IOT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), or Sensor Networks (Sensornet)-dwarfs the Internet as we know today. In addition to the challenges of making the sensors small, affordable, and energy efficient, and networking them into a reliable ensemble, the more arduous task is the timely processing of voluminous and streaming sensor data subject to energy and network constraints and uncertainties. To address these challenges, we must leverage the advances in disciplines such as devices, wireless communication, control and decision theory, machine learning, and database, to name a few. Cloud computing provides new opportunities in aggregating sensor data and exploiting the aggregates for greater coverage and relevancy, and yet at the same time exacerbates the issue of privacy and security. A multi-disciplinary, holistic approach is needed.

This paper presents a framework for context-driven policy-based QoS control and end-to-end resource management in converged next generation networks. The Converged Networks QoS Framework (CNQF) is being developed within the IU-ATC project, and comprises distributed functional entities whose instances co-ordinate the converged network infrastructure to facilitate scalable and efficient end-to-end QoS management. The CNQF design leverages aspects of TISPAN, IETF and 3GPP policy-based management architectures whilst also introducing important innovative extensions to support context-aware QoS control in converged networks. The framework architecture is presented and its functionalities and operation in specific application scenarios are described.

Ad hoc networking allows portable mobile devices to establish communication path without having any central infrastructure. As there is no centralized infrastructure and the mobile devices are moving randomly, this gives rise to various kinds of problems such as routing and detecting faulty mobile nodes in the network. In this paper, the problem of fault diagnosis in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is considered. In fact, fault-diagnosis becomes important building block to establish dependability in MANET. An important problem in MANET is the distributed system-level diagnosis problem whose purpose is to have each fault-free mobile node to determine the state of all the mobile nodes assuming a MANET composed of N nodes that can be faulty or fault-free. This paper uses a hierarchical clustering approach proposed by authors Durate and Nanya for diagnosing nodes in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The proposed diagnosis algorithm is linearly scalable under the assumption that the mobiles may be: (i) crash faulty due to out of range or physical damage and (ii) value faulty due to sending erroneous messages while operating in the field. The generic parameters such as diagnostic latency and message complexity are used for evaluating the proposed diagnosis algorithm. The result shows that diagnosis latency and message complexity is reduced as compared to non-clustering distributed diagnosis algorithm Forward Heartbeat.
