In this paper, a distributed network coding (DNC) scheme based on improved online fountain codes is proposed for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Specifically we propose an improved online fountain codes with the objection of optimizing the build-up phase of the conventional online fountain codes. Then based upon this method, we develop a distributed network coding scheme for sensed data gathering over wireless sensor networks. We analyze the properties of the proposed DNC scheme and derive the upper coding overhead bound for it over binary erasure channels under belief propagation (BP) decoding. Simulation results show that the proposed DNC scheme can achieve a better performance with respect to both coding overhead and complexities.

With the recent advances in communication technology and the availability of powerful desktop computers, networking has gained popularity and many applications are being moved onto the Internet. To ease the development of distributed applications, software support to facilitate coordination and communication is needed. The paper describes an object oriented system for structured design and development of distributed applications. The basic system consists of a set of multithreaded servers, one server for each site in the network, which provide some basic communication facilities. The system has been developed using JAVA as the programming language. We use the software support provided by this basic system to define commonly used patterns of interaction in distributed applications. We also identify several different techniques for systematic composition of patterns to develop different applications. We illustrate the use of our system by defining some patterns and using them to build a sample application.

In this paper, we study the optimum transceiver design of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems with distributed antennas. The basestation in the system is equipped with multiple distributed antenna units (DAUs) spreading out at different locations in a service area, and they are connected to a central unit (CU) through high-throughput low-latency links such as optical fibers. In the downlink, signals for multiple users are first modulated and precoded at the CU, and are then forwarded to the DAUs, which broadcast the signals to all the users in the system. Each user extracts its own information with a linear filter. The beamforming precoder at the CU and the linear filters at the UEs are jointly designed to minimize the sum mean squared error (MSE) of all the users. The optimum designs are performed under two different power constraints: a constraint on the total power of all DAUs, and constraints on the power consumption of each DAU. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed system improve with the number of DAUs and the number of UEs under both power constraints.

Data security and availability for operational use are frequently seen as conflicting goals. Research on searchable encryption and homomorphic encryption are a start, but they typically build from encryption methods that, at best, provide protections based on problems assumed to be computationally hard. By contrast, data encoding methods such as secret sharing provide information-theoretic data protections. Archives that distribute data using secret sharing can provide data protections that are resilient to malicious insiders, compromised systems, and untrusted components. In this paper, we create the Serial Interpolation Filter, a method for storing and interacting with sets of data that are secured and distributed using secret sharing. We provide the ability to operate over set-oriented data distributed across multiple repositories without exposing the original data. Furthermore, we demonstrate the security of our method under various attacker models and provide protocol extensions to handle colluding attackers. The Serial Interpolation Filter provides information-theoretic protections from a single attacker and computationally hard protections from colluding attackers.

The rising demand for mobile computing has created a need for improved file system that supports mobile clients. Current file systems with support for mobility provide availability through file replicas that are cached at the client side. However, mobile clients may experience different obstacles in regard to the local cache, such as the limited network bandwidth, the intermittent connection, and serious conflicts when synchronizing back to the server, to mention a few. In this paper, we propose a novel fault tolerant and conflict free distributed file system for mobile clients, which provides high available and reliable storage for files and guarantees that file operations are executed in spite of concurrency and failures. The design is intended to fit mobile clients (e.g., PDAs and cell phones) that have limited storage space and can not store all data they need, yet they require to access these data at all times. We present our mobile file system model, describe its implementation, and report on its performance evaluation using an extensive set of simulation experiments. Our results indicate clearly that our model exhibits a significant degree of automation and conflict-free mobile file system.

Current generation of distributed real-time systems requires more flexibility and the ability of changing its behaviour at run time. This paper presents a model and an algorithm for QoS-aware service composition in distributed systems with real-time requirements. This model is applicable in application domains where temporal guarantees and flexibility are needed, such as remote monitoring, control or surveillance. Our approach combines concepts from the service oriented paradigm and distributed real-time systems. We propose a concrete system model based on a holistic time-triggered-based approach for design and configuration and two composition algorithms: an exhaustive one that computes the optimal service combination in terms of a figure of merit, suitable for off-line composition; and a distributed one, based on heuristics, that can be used for on-line distributed composition.

We present a process calculus, CCA, for the modelling and verification of mobile systems that are context-aware. This process calculus is built upon the calculus of mobile ambients and introduces new constructs to enable ambients and processes to be aware of the environment in which they are being executed. This results in a powerful calculus where mobility and context-awareness are first-class citizens. We present the syntax and a formal semantics of the calculus. We show that CCA can encode the pi-calculus, and illustrate the pragmatics of the calculus through a case study of a context-aware hospital bed.

In this paper we reinforce the benefits of a trust based approach in mobile multi-agent systems. Whilst we do not specify a trust model we provide a framework for property based trust, defining the observations which underpin many pre-existing trust models. This framework maintains subjectivity which should be the basis of any trust based system yet enables entities to communicate and collaborate trust information regardless of the trust model used for deliberation. We also introduce dasiatrust communitiespsila as a representation of property based trust information thus enabling the collaboration of reputation information.

Spatial Modulation (SM), conveying data bits via the antenna-activation process, is a novel modulation technique for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. SM can be combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to improve the reliability, quality and capacity of transmission. However, SM OFDM systems also inherit from OFDM systems the drawback of high sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO), especially in distributed MIMO environment where the CFOs of all transmit antennas are different. To overcome this problem, in this paper, the CFO characteristics of distributed SM OFDM systems are studied and a new iterative CFO compensation algorithm which exploits the interference effect caused by each antenna's CFO is proposed. Moreover, the information-conveying feature of SM system is applied to the proposed CFO compensation algorithm to reduce the computational complexity and provide fast compensation of CFOs. Simulation results show that the proposed CFO compensator achieves considerable performance improvement with low complexity.

Collaborative online encyclopedias such as Wikipedia and PlanetMath are becoming increasingly popular. In order to understand an article in a corpus a user must understand the related and underlying concepts through linked articles. In this paper, we introduce NNexus, a generalization of the automatic linking component of *** and the first system that automates the process of linking encyclopedia entries into a semantic network of concepts. We discuss the challenges, present the conceptual models as well as specific mechanisms of NNexus system, and discuss some of our ongoing and completed works
