Software Defined Systems (SDS) abstract the actual hardware at different layers with software components, layers such as networking, Storage, Security, Servers, Data Centers, Clouds etc. This abstraction facilitates construction, integration / composition and management of complex systems effectively and sustainably. Microservices architecture is increasingly being used for designing and deploying large-scale application systems in both cloud-based and enterprise infrastructures where relatively small, loosely coupled microservices communicate with each other using lightweight communication protocols and abstract complex software application(s). We propose a sustainable SDS architecture to manage microservices of a distributed edge computing system which reduces dependency on any data centre / cloud infrastructure.

distributed Quantum computing (DQC) enables the execution of quantum circuits across multiple interconnected quantum processing units (QPUs), but requiring efficient qubit allocation and network topology design to optimize computational performance. Proper qubit allocation minimizes entanglement costs across QPUs, balances computational workload, and ensures efficient execution of quantum computing tasks. Meanwhile, network topology plays a crucial role in reducing entanglement routing complexity and communication overhead for remote quantum gate operations. In this paper, we propose a joint optimization framework for network topology design and qubit allocation in DQC to minimize the communication overhead. We formulate the problem as a tractable integer nonlinear programming model that explicitly incorporates entanglement routing, thereby ensuring a more tractable optimization process. To further improve computational efficiency, we present a partially linearized version of the problem, making it solvable using any classical optimization solver. Extensive simulations on both random and real-world quantum circuits validate the effectiveness of our proposed approach, demonstrating its capability to handle complex quantum circuits while reducing communication costs in DQC.

A communication network is a graph in which each node has only local information about the graph and nodes communicate by passing messages along its edges. Here, we consider the geometric communication network where the nodes also occupy points in space and the distance between points is the Euclidean distance. Our goal is to understand the communication cost needed to solve several fundamental geometry problems, including Convex Hull, Diameter, Closest Pair, and approximations of these problems, in the asynchronous CONGEST KT1 model. This extends the 2011 result of Rajsbaum and Urrutia for finding a convex hull of a planar geometric communication network to networks of arbitrary topology.

distributed applications rely on Certification Authorities (CAs) entities associated with a few institutions around the world. There are countless trusted institutions on the networks, e.g., universities, governments, banks, making effective use of CAs. Although largely used, the decentralized management of CAs is an administrative challenge. In this context, the joint emergence of digital ledgers and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) compose a new opportunity to effectively decentralize single assets safely. Towards distributed Certification Authority with Non-Fungible Token (DCANon) is a distributed Certification Authority (CA) built to trusted institutions and supported by Non-Fungible Token (NFT) concepts. DCANon changes the way revocation may be find, permitting that all consortium member crawler the blockchain for revoked certificates, independently from which CA this revocation occurs. A proof-of-concept prototype was implemented with Hyperledger Fabric demonstrating the benefits of DCANon. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Scientific research increasingly relies on distributed computational resources, storage systems, networks, and instruments, ranging from HPC and cloud systems to edge devices. Event-driven architecture (EDA) benefits applications targeting distributed research infrastructures by enabling the organization, communication, processing, reliability, and security of events generated from many sources. To support the development of scientific EDA, we introduce Octopus, a hybrid, cloud-to-edge event fabric designed to link many local event producers and consumers with cloud-hosted brokers, and to provide a fabric for developing resilient applications. Octopus can be scaled to meet demand, permits the deployment of highly available Triggers for automatic event processing, and enforces fine-grained access control. We identify requirements in self-driving laboratories, scientific data automation, online task scheduling, epidemic modeling, and dynamic workflow management use cases, and present results demonstrating Octopus’ ability to meet those requirements. Octopus supports producing and consuming events at a rate of over 4.2 M and 9.6 M events per second, respectively, from distributed clients.

Consider distributed transactional memory systems where transactions residing at nodes of a communication graph operate on shared, mobile objects. A transaction requests the objects it needs, executes once those objects have been assembled, and then forwards those objects to other waiting transactions. We study the predefined order scheduling problem of committing transactions according to their priorities. This problem naturally arises in areas, such as loop parallelization and state-machine-based computing, where producing executions equivalent to a priority order is needed to satisfy certain properties. Specifically, we study predefined order scheduling considering two performance metrics fundamental to any distributed system: (i) execution time - total time to commit all the transactions and (ii) communication cost - the total distance messages travel. We design scheduling algorithms that are simultaneously efficient for both the metrics and rigorously evaluate them through several benchmarks on random and grid graphs, validating their efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of predefined order scheduling in distributed systems.

In the realm of private permissioned blockchain platforms, increasing throughput is a pivotal objective. This paper focuses on the optimization of throughput in Hyperledger Fabric, a private permissioned leading blockchain framework tailored for enterprise applications. The paper proposes a novel approach to enhancing the platform’s performance by reevaluating the endorsement policy. By implementing a Less-Than-Half endorsement policy, the paper aims to streamline transaction validation processes and bridge the gap between Fabric’s throughput and the demands of large-scale industrial applications. The proposed method objects to boost transaction throughput without compromising security or reliability. The paper provides an overview of Hyperledger Fabric architecture, discusses the pre-verification mechanism, and presents the proposed method for optimizing throughput. The performance of the system is analyzed using Hyperledger Caliper and Prometheus. Simulation results show increase in the throughput of the Less-Than-Half of the endorsement policy as compared to the majority and it also demonstrates the significant reduction in the latency of the Less-Than-Half endorsement policy.

This paper proposes a unique approach to refining self-sufficient network retailers inside distributed and cooperative networks. A dispensed reinforcement gaining knowledge of community (DRLN) architecture is proposed to refine a prototype autonomous agent in a distributed cooperative community. The DRLN consists of a set of unbiased getting-to-know sellers that together form a disbursed reinforcement gaining knowledge of the device. Each agent is accountable for refining an unmarried agent in the network, and the dealers cooperate and trade revel with each other. This paper examines the effect of the usage of multiple dealers to refine the independent agents and evaluates its efficacy. Effects display that the proposed DRLN appreciably advanced the selection-making and coordination of the autonomous agents in comparison to the unrefined model. Moreover, the DRLN was located to be sturdy to small modifications in the community structure and substantially better the reliability of the community’s autonomous behavior.

Modern businesses and Governments rely on Cloud computing for offering Internet based services to their users as the cloud offers a Reliable and Secure hosting platform complying with the CIA triad of Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability. distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is a threat to the availability pillar of the CIA triad which floods the infrastructure, network resources or websites with high volume of artificial traffic to overwhelm the Cloud resources preventing legitimate users from accessing the services leading to loss of revenue and reputation. As the attacks are distributed, the incoming flood of traffic appears to originate from numerous sources, making it practically impossible to deter the attacks by conventional methods of blocking source IPs. This article provides an overview of the impact and Taxonomy of DDoS attacks in the Cloud computing environment followed by various approaches for the identification of DDoS attacks and devising effective countermeasures for proactive mitigation of application layer attacks to secure the production environment from potential loss incurred towards service downtime.

Data I/O poses a significant bottleneck for distributed deep learning applications. Utilizing computing-node attached storage as a cache has become a prevalent solution to this problem. Given the large size of training datasets and the limited capacity of a single-node local storage, training samples are loaded in shards across computing nodes, requiring a deep learning job on one node to access samples from neighboring nodes. Compared to local node access, these neighboring accesses are highly inefficient for small samples. To mitigate this issue, we propose a node-aware prefetch algorithm that greedily fetches samples from neighboring nodes. Evaluation results show that our approach improves neighboring access performance by 60x for small samples of 64B size. For large samples of 1MB size, our approach still exhibits a 26% improvement.
