The papers in this special section focus on softwarized networking for next generation industrial cyber-physical systems (CPSs). With the emergence of embedded and ubiquitous cyberphysical applications, the rationale of blending the physical and the virtual worlds has become ever promising. These papers examine several topics that are recently concerned in the community, including the software defined architectures and implementations, advanced machine learning and data analytics solutions, blockchain-based network services and applications, network function allocation, dependable and trustable solutions, energy efficient networks and services, and other enabling technologies for integrating softwarized networks into CPSs.

The Internet, a key participant (world wide web) in worldwide information exchange and media sharing, has experienced cumulative upgrades, developments, and given up consequent product IOT, making technology affordable and practical for all uses. Research development includes smart sensors, a communication channel and protocols for exchanging data, and peripherals like an Arduino, a Texas Instruments MSP430G2553, a Weather-proof Tx. Rx. Kit (for exchanging data), a Data Receptor and Decoder Shield for Lab View Kit (for exchanging data), an addressing and de-addressing data module, a communication shield, etc. It is now possible to communicate from a desktop computer or an Android smartphone to a portable device that has an embedded device, such as a microcontroller, a microprocessor, or a sensor. In other words, IOT combines always-on networking, always-on computation, and always-on intelligence. The Internet of Things facilitates communication between the central hub (fitted with a Lab-View interface) and the distributed modules (found in places like parks, subways, and highways) that control the lights. The Internet of Things is also useful for keeping the overall cost of setup and maintenance within reasonable economic bounds. The planned development takes into account IoT on two main scales: city-wide automation (also known as smart city) and home-level automation (also known as covering up).

Should you decide to launch a nano-satellite today in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), the cost of renting ground station communication infrastructure is likely to significantly exceed your launch costs. While space launch costs have lowered significantly with innovative launch vehicles, private players, and smaller payloads, access to ground infrastructure remains a luxury. This is especially true for smaller LEO satellites that are only visible at any location for a few tens of minutes a day and whose signals are extremely weak, necessitating bulky and expensive ground station infrastructure. In this paper, we present a community-driven distributed reception paradigm for LEO satellite signals where signals received on many tiny handheld receivers (not necessarily deployed on rooftops but also indoors) are coherently combined to recover the desired signal. This is made possible by employing new synchronization and receiver orientation techniques that study satellite trajectories and leverage the presence of other ambient signals. We compare our results with a large commercial receiver deployed on a rooftop and show a 8 dB SNR increase both indoors and outdoors using 8 receivers, costing $38 per RF frontend.

Quorum systems are a key abstraction in distributed fault-tolerant computing for capturing trust assumptions. They can be found at the core of many algorithms for implementing reliable broadcasts, shared memory, consensus and other problems. This talk introduces asymmetric Byzantine quorum systems that model subjective trust. Every process is free to choose which combinations of other processes it trusts and which ones it considers faulty. Asymmetric quorum systems strictly generalize standard Byzantine quorum systems, which have only one global trust assumption for all processes. The talk presents also several protocols that tolerate Byzantine faults with asymmetric trust, such as shared-register implementations and reliable Byzantine broadcasts. Consensus is arguably one of the most important notions in distributed computing and also relevant for practical systems. We also show how to realize consensus protocols with asymmetric trust, illustrating our approach for protocols in partially synchronous systems and for asynchronous protocols that use randomization with asymmetric trust. Asymmetric quorum systems offer a way to understand some ideas behind the Ripple and Stellar blockchain protocols, which aim at relaxing symmetric trust assumptions and permit flexible trust. The presentation is based on joint work with Björn Tackmann and Luca Zanolini [1, 2].

The rapid expansion of data in the modern era is primarily due to the emergence of social networks and information. Because of the number and diversity of data available, researchers are more likely to employ big data analysis to make business judgments. Additionally, this has contributed to the data science sector’s explosive growth. Many problems still need to be resolved, notably those involving data security and privacy. Concerns for data security and confidentiality arise at every stage of the data science sector, ranging from data extraction, gathering, preparation, and dissemination. The underlying reasons for risk are closely intertwined. Because of its distributed structure, privacy, protection, and other features, blockchain technology is highly regarded and acknowledged. This could alter the way the information is obtained and distributed. Even though experts think blockchain technology will assist data science in advancing and conquering some of its current obstacles, there may be some unintended consequences. Therefore, it is essential to investigate how blockchain technology and data science are related. Then examine blockchain technology challenges and its benefits that will be of great importance to data science. This discussion and its drawbacks will open up the future research direction in blockchain technology when it merges with data science.

One of the most groundbreaking approaches to the processing and analysis of large datasets has been created as a result of the combination of MapReduce techniques and machine learning algorithms within the framework of big data analytics. The problems of traditional data processing in terms of handling the volume, velocity, and variety of big data are addressed by the distributed computing architecture introduced by MapReduce. This research investigates the ways in which MapReduce may be used to simplify the process of machine learning, with a particular focus on the capabilities of the framework to manage enormous volumes of data and to parallelize operations. By contrasting the performance of MapReduce with that of more traditional methods, the study solves the problems of scalability and computing efficiency that are brought about by massive amounts of data. Through an in-depth analysis, the paper highlights the optimization potential of MapReduce as well as its implications for next-generation machine learning applications across a variety of industries.

Computer networks are veins of modern distributed systems. Array DBMS (Data Base Management Systems) operate on big data which is naturally modeled as arrays, e.g. Earth remote sensing data and numerical simulation. Big data makes array DBMS to be distributed and highly utilize computer networks. The R&D area of array DBMS is relatively young and machine learning is just paving its way to array DBMS. Hence, existing work is this area is rather sparse and is just emerging. This paper considers distributed, large matrix multiplication (LMM) executed directly inside array DBMS. LMM is the core operation for many machine learning techniques on big data. LMM directly inside array DBMS is not well studied and optimized. We present novel LMM approaches for array DBMS and analyze the intricacies of LMM in array DBMS including execution plan construction and network utilization. We carry out performance evaluation in Microsoft Azure Cloud on a network cluster of virtual machines, report insights derived from the experiments, and present our vision for the future machine learning R&D directions based on LMM directly inside array DBMS.

Applications of Information-Centric networking (ICN) technology to future internet of things (IoT) and distributed edge/fog computing are widely discussed in various research committees. In this paper, we demonstrate a real-time video streaming scenario using CeforeSim, an NS-3 based ICN simulator. CeforeSim is based on Cefore, an open-source implementation of ICN, which is compliant with the CCNx packet format standardized by the IRTF ICN Research Group (ICNRG). The virtual interfaces provisioned in CeforeSim expedite seamless interaction between the simulated nodes and physical nodes that run the Cefore applications, thereby affording performance evaluations in various scenarios, such as handover of mobile nodes, large-scale sensor networks, and distributed edge/fog computing with the real environments.

In recent years, the interest in the study of seas and oceans has dramatically increased as they are considered of primary importance for forecasting catastrophic events or for supporting blue economy, as well as the marine tourism, improving the tourist reception or enhancing any marine-related activity. This led to the development of IT platforms that allow to monitor the marine environment and provide a number of services to different kinds of final users, whether they are private individuals interested in the status of the seas, or companies whose business depends on the marine environmental monitoring. The main limitations of current platforms are due to such a difference between free trials, which often focus only on specific aspects of deep waters, and subscriptions, which provide analyzes whose reliability is generally not proportional to the costs. This paper presents SmartWave, a project funded by Regione Sicilia (European Regional Development Fund), that aims to develop a novel IT platform to observe and predict phenomena that characterize the marine environment, while also providing the consumer with a unified portal to collect, access and analyze marine-related information. To achieve this goal, one of the main challenges of this project is to aggregate and standardize heterogeneous data from multiple sources in order to offer very accurate information to private or business consumers.

In this paper, data structures for reducing redundancy of routing information on the distributed key-value store based on order preserving linear hashing and Skip Graph with the load balancing method are proposed and evaluated. In this system, data are divided by order preserving linear hashing and Skip Graph is used for overlay network. For load balancing, by storing many Skip Graph nodes in one physical node, any highest-load Skip Graph can be divided. By this method, load balancing can be done. But the number of Skip Graph nodes becomes very many and redundant routing information exists. But this redundant routing information has regularity. In this paper, two types of data structure for reducing redundant routing elements are proposed. They are tree structure and array structure. By calculating space for them and searching time, the proposed data structures are experimentally evaluated.
