Automated design rule checking (RDC) in Building Information modelling (BIM) can be challenging especially when dealing with qualitative aspects and intricate regulations like building circulation. The study proposes a novel method for Regulatory design Rule Checking (RDRC) for building circulation, addressing challenges in translating regulations to computational constructs and extracting relevant information from complex BIM models. Through a tiered compliance assessment, the investigation considers preventive rule-based checks for doors and corridors and explores constraint-based regulatory incentive schemes such as through-block pedestrian links (TBPL). The RDRC analysis identifies non-compliance and concludes with a recommendation for potential adjustments. This work aims to benefit designers and regulators, providing productivity enhancements and a deeper understanding of regulatory intricacies in the context of building circulation.

We discuss the design and development of a digital twin for optical transport networks, focusing on a bottom-up approach aligned with network operators' specific needs. Our methodology was carved by prioritizing operator requirements, aiming to enhance the management and analysis of opticalnetworks. Having a digital twin enabled gathering telemetry data from the network to assess its health and support preventive maintenance. We navigate through various challenges, from model accuracy to user interface design, and share the lessons learned from these experiences, which helped to implement and validate it in real networks.

A thermal RC-network is presented for compact modelling of self-heating in a Si photonic ring modulator. The model captures the non-linear thermo-optical dynamics at low frequencies (<1 GHz), and accurately reproduces nanosecond-scale variations in optical transmission as observed in experiments.

We demonstrate service performance-optimization using a digital twin in a live production network. We collect data from the network controller then feed it into a digital twin that computes optimal channel launch power configurations. The configurations are then deployed on the live network in multiple steps (generated by the digital twin) to avoid performance deterioration of the service under re-optimization and of other services. We apply this process to improve the SNR of two live services by 2dB, then equalize the full spectrum of an optical Multiplex Section (OMS) to reduce the power spectrum range at the pre-amplifier by 1.2dB.

This study investigates the feasibility of deploying digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) in the metro aggregation layer of opticalnetworks. It leverages a real-world network topology provided by Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM), along with its associated traffic patterns, to analyze optical performance, e.g., in terms of optical signal-to-noise-ratio (OSNR). The analysis results are then used to optimize the selection and quantity of optical pluggable transceivers, as well as the placement and number of optical amplifiers required within the network to meet operator-defined performance requirements. Finally, a hardware cost analysis is presented, highlighting the significant cost savings achievable through sublink aggregation in DSCM-enabled point-to-multipoint (P2MP) networks.

A concept of distributed system for collecting malicious traffic at its source and the idea of backpropagation of the attack-related data to the originating operator is presented. A basic construction of MEC enabled node SDNbox, capable of collecting cybersecurity evidence emerges as an essential part of the proposed system. The system of distributed nodes may be best orchestrated using SDN approach, and such a proposal is presented and discussed.

We present the design of an optical transmission link with cascaded in-line fibre-optical parametric amplifiers (FOPAs), which operate with a multi-tone modulation of the pump phase to support the required signal gain. A novel, online digital signal processing algorithm is included in the receiver to mitigate the accumulated phase and amplitude signal distortions that are induced by the pump modulation at each FOPA stage. We numerically demonstrate that our proposed design achieves substantial Q(2)-factor performance benefits in 16 quadrature-amplitude modulation signal transmission over long distances.

Physical topology is a major determinant of the system performance of optical backbone networks, and it is important to understand the relationships between physical topology features and system performance for better system design. For application in elastic optical backbone network systems, we propose a framework of correlation analysis to examine these relationships comprehensively, and we use the framework to investigate the relationships between various physical topology features and system performance. The results of numerical experiments suggest that four important physical topology features are strongly correlated with the system performance. Specifically, the average number of hops and the algebraic connectivity are strongly correlated with only the communication capacity, whereas the average path length and the geodesic distance Laplacian spectral radius are strongly correlated with both the capacity and the cost. The geodesic distance Laplacian spectral radius is a newly defined quantity that is expected to expand the possibilities of physical topology design in the future. Through combinations of these features, we classify physical topology designs and examine the relationships between the classification, real networks, and graph generation algorithms.

One of the key performance metrics for opticalnetworks is the maximum achievable throughput. Determining it however, is an NP-hard optimisation problem, often solved via computationally expensive integer linear programming (ILP) formulations. Heuristics, in conjunction with sequential loading, are scalable but non-exact. There is, thus, a need for ultra-fast performance evaluation of opticalnetworks. For the first time, we propose message passing neural networks (MPNN), to learn the relationship between the structure and the maximum achievable throughput of opticalnetworks. We demonstrate that MPNNs can accurately predict the maximum achievable throughput while reducing the computational time by 5-orders of magnitude compared to the ILP.
