As the parallelcomputing education movement attempts to increase the coverage of parallel and distributedcomputing (PDC) material in worldwide CS curricula, a major challenge is propagation: getting others to adopt PDC-related curricular materials. This paper reports on a series of faculty development workshops for the ToUCH project, held with the goal of propagating modules on heterogeneous parallelcomputing. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these workshops were held in a new virtual format that split the meeting over multiple days and included explicit expectations for followup work to increase adoption. Subsequent evaluation show that the participants appreciated the format and that many of them adopted one or more of the modules.

In order to address the conflict between operating cost and environmental impact, this paper proposes a parallel membrane computing-based and fuzzy multi-objective optimization approach for solving the dynamic economic dispatch problem in a combined heat and power plant with wind power (CHPEED). By defining membership functions for the generation cost and pollutant gas emissions, the multi-objective problem is fuzzified and transformed into a single-objective nonlinear optimization problem using the maximum fuzzy satisfaction method. The parallel membrane computing strategy is applied to improve the traditional multi-objective optimization approach. To validate the effectiveness of this optimization method, the approach is applied to a 7-unit test system, and simulation results show that considering pollutant gas emissions in the dispatch model can achieve a balanced optimization of economic and emission reduction objectives compared to CHPED without considering environmental factors.

This paper proposes a decision-making approach for the control of distribution systems with distributed energy resources (DERs) equipped with photovoltaic (PV) units and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The objective is to minimize the total operational cost of the distribution system while satisfying the system operating constraints. The method is based on the discrete-time finite-horizon Markov Decision Process (MDP) framework. Different aspects of the distribution system operation are considered, such as the possibilities of curtailment of PV generation, managing battery storage, reactive power injection, load shedding, and providing a flexibility service for the transmission system. The model is tested for the IEEE 33-bus system with two added DERs and the study cases involve various unexpected events. The experimental results show that this method enables the attainment of relatively low total cost values compared to the reference deterministic approach. The benefits of applying this approach are particularly evident when there is a significant difference between the predicted and actual PV power generation.
