distributed parallel training using computing clusters is desirable for large scale deep neural networks. One of the key challenges in distributed training is the communication cost for exchanging information, such as stochastic gradients, among training nodes. Recently, gradient sparsification techniques have been proposed to reduce the amount of data exchanged and thus alleviate the network overhead. However, most existing gradient sparsification approaches consider only synchronous parallelism and cannot be applied in asynchronous distributed training. In this paper, we present the dual-way gradient sparsification (DGS) approach for asynchronous distributed training. Different from existing approaches, where workers download the global model from parameter server, our approach lets workers download model difference from the parameter server. With such design, both the gradients sent to server and the model parameters downloaded from server can be sparsified and the dual-way communication cost between server and workers can be significantly reduced. To preserve accuracy under the dual-way sparsification, we design a new momentum, SAMomentum, which is sparsification aware and offers significant optimization boost. Extensive experiments with different scales on ImageNet and CIFAR-10 show that, (1) compared with similar works, DGS with SAMomentum consistently achieves better performance;(2) DGS improves the scalability of asynchronous training, especially with limited networking infrastructure.

In data centers, the server monitoring and man-agement functions are offloaded to the baseboard management controller integrated in the server. New requirements emerge with the development of cloud computing technology. Deep communication between the host and the baseboard management controller through the in-band communication interface is nec-essary. However, the existing interfaces have limitations in terms of security and performance. In this paper, we propose a secure and efficient USB-based in-band communication interface. We separate it into the transport layer and the protocol layer. The transport model for the transport layer uses USB as the hardware connection, abstracts the physical USB channel into multiple virtual channels, and provides hardware-independent interfaces for the protocol layer. The message protocol for the protocol layer can perform authentication and securely transport management messages. We verify the effectiveness of the transport model using SPIN and the security of the message protocol using BAN logic. We also implement the proposed interface to a server with an AST2400 baseboard management controller and implement three management functions. The security analysis and performance evaluation show that the proposed interface is secure and efficient, which meets the in-band management requirements.

Capable of supplying local loads, DC microgrids have received much attention in the last decade for alleviating power flow through the main power grid. This has been achieved through the use of edge devices on the control of the converters, but, among other problems, microgrids have stability issues when Constant Power Loads (CPL) are present. This problem was already solved in the literature with the DC STATCOM power converter, in normal operation mode, it can deal with the grid operation. However, in fault cases, the solutions available still fail to ignore faults or even contribute to them. The present work aims to explore the potential of a light machine learning algorithm of the type Weightless Artificial Neural Network (WANN) for predicting the output of the original controller used in the DC STATCOM on an edge device connected to a converter, and investigate its generalization capability under microgrid fault situations. The WANN used is based on the regression variant of the Wilkes, Stonham, and Aleksander Recognition Device (WiSARD), coined as Regression WiSARD (ReW). The evaluation criteria employed measured the capability of the controller to reject the fault condition. Initial results showed surprisingly good results in comparison to the original DC STATCOM controller, indicating that a ReW-based controller plays well the role of the DC STATCOM and was able to cope with fault situations.

The advances of containers have significantly promoted the development of microservice architecture. This architecture splits a monolithic application into multiple independent components and the container orchestrator manages these components by the container in the cloud environment. The feasibility of deploying high performance computing(HPC) applications as microservices has been proven, but the existing container orchestrator incurs a large performance overhead as there is interference between different containers on the same physical host. In this paper, we design an agile workflow microservice system for HPC applications with fast-start OSv. We consider improving HPC workflow performance from two aspects: single OSv startup time optimization and workflow orchestration optimization. For single OSv startup time optimization, we design a fast-start OSv by analyzing the process of OSv startup and finding an optimization by modifying OSv source code. In this way, we get nearly 50% improvement of startup time. For workflow orchestration optimization, we propose four optimization techniques to speed up the execution of workflow by jointly considering OSv and workflow features, namely: node fusion, node merge, image preload, boot delay. Furthermore, we utilize our fast startup OSv to design an orchestration system for efficiently building an agile HPC workflow microservice by Kubevirt. Our experimental results optimization microservice system reduces the execution time by 30% compared with the original deployment with docker.

Sparse grids enable accurate function approximation in higher-dimensional settings with a moderate number of grid points. In this paper, we introduce generalized versions of various efficient sparse grid algorithms in a unified notation: For local basis functions, transformations between function values at grid points and interpolation coefficients can be efficiently realized using the well-known unidirectional principle (Balder and Zenger, SIAM Journal on Scientific computing, 17(3):631–646, May 1996;Bungartz, Finite Elements of Higher Order on Sparse grids, Universität München, Aachen, November 1998). For general basis functions without spatial adaptivity, Avila and Carrington show in (The Journal of Chemical Physics, 143(21):214108, 2015) and follow-up work that the unidirectional principle can instead be applied to an equivalent incremental basis, and we show that a second application of the unidirectional principle can be used to compute interpolation coefficients for the original, non-incremental basis. Our Open Source implementation for the latter case is able to compute interpolation coefficients for up to 20 million sparse grid points in one second on a single CPU core. Classical computers require large memory resources and computational power to simulate quantum circuits with a large number of qubits. Even supercomputers that can store huge amounts of data face a scalability issue in regard to parallel quantum computing simulations because of the latency of data movements between distributed memory spaces. Here, we apply a cache blocking technique by inserting swap gates in quantum circuits to decrease data movements. We implemented this technique in the open source simulation framework Qiskit Aer. We evaluated our simulator on GPU clusters and observed good scalability.

With the energy demand of the world increasing day-by-day, aging the present power system infrastructure and the increasing integration of renewable energy resources in quenching the load demand, the development of microgrids (MGs) is imminent. The performance analysis of AC MG and DC MG is made based on the concentration of the type of distributed energy resources (DER) in a development, availability of energy storage systems (ESS), use of converters and the economic/physical feasibility of connection and synchronization with the utility grid. The importance and demand of renewable resources has been rising in wake of the rising fuel costs and limited availability of conventional fuel sources demand the increased penetration of solar PV and wind energy into the grid. This can be implemented with the help of parallel inverter-based MG technology, which can not only help integrate the renewable energy into the main grid, reducing the load on fossil fuels, but also increase the reliability of electric power supply as MGs can operate in stand-alone mode as well, independent of the grid. This requires robust, fast and precise control system algorithms which can control the AC bus voltage and frequency even with variable loads associated with the MGs. Two different control algorithms, conventional droop control and Model Predictive Control (MPC) based droop control can be implemented for independent control of the MG. In MPC based operation, the voltage and frequencies are predicted and comparing it through a cost function with the reference value generated, the appropriate switching pattern of VSI is generated to produce the output voltage. In this paper, these two control methods have been implemented and their performance with active and reactive power sharing are compared.

B-mode ultrasound tongue imaging is a non-invasive and real-time method for visualizing vocal tract deformation. However, accurately extracting the tongue’s surface contour remains a significant challenge due to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and prevalent speckle noise in ultrasound images. Traditional supervised learning models often require large labeled datasets, which are labor-intensive to produce and susceptible to noise interference. To address these limitations, we present a novel Counterfactual Ultrasound Anti-Interference Self-Supervised Network (CUAI-SSN), which integrates self-supervised learning (SSL) with counterfactual data augmentation, progressively disentangles confounding factors, ensuring that the model generalizes well across varied ultrasound conditions. Our approach leverages causal reasoning to decouple noise from relevant features, enabling the model to learn robust representations that focus on essential tongue structures. By generating counterfactual image-label pairs, our method introduces alternative, noise-independent scenarios that enhance model training. Furthermore, we introduce attention mechanisms to enhance the network’s ability to capture fine-grained details even in noisy conditions. Extensive experiments on real ultrasound tongue images demonstrate that CUAI-SSN outperforms existing methods, setting a new benchmark for automated contour extraction in ultrasound tongue imaging. The article explores the possibility of computing parallel data compression using cubic spline. For example, ways to parallel the process of digital processing of seismic signals have been considered. The main performance indicators of parallel algorithms have been compared with consecutive algorithms. Spline methods are a versatile signal processing tool. It is more accurate than other mathematical methods, information equality is faster, and maintenance costs are much lower. On the other hand, the equipment used in such systems must also meet high performance requirements. To achieve high speeds, parallel algorithms were developed using OpenMP and MPI technologies and implemented in the architecture of multi-core processors. A mathematical method for the parallel calculation of the coefficients of a cubic spline has been developed and a parallel signal processing algorithm has been developed on its basis. As an example, parallelization is a computation during seismic signal processing. The main indicators of efficiency and acceleration of the parallel algorithm were compared with the sequential algorithm. Explained the relevance of the use of parallel numerical systems, described the main approaches to the distribution of processes and methods of data processing, described the principles of parallel programming technology, studied the basic parameters of parallel algorithms for the initial calculation of the numerical value of cubic spline. The parallel algorithm considered for constructing the cubic spline of defect 1 as p - > n leads to the construction of a local cubic spline on each grid interval omega.

Hyperparameter optimization is a crucial task in numerous applications of numerical modelling techniques. Methods as diverse as classical simulations and the great variety of machine learning techniques used nowadays, require an appropriate choice of their hyperparameters (HPs). While for classical simulations, calibration to measured data by numerical optimization techniques has a long tradition, the HPs of neural networks are often chosen by a mixture of grid search, random search and manual tuning. In the present study the expert tool "OmniOpt" is introduced, which allows to optimize the HPs of a wide range of problems, ranging from classical simulations to different kinds of neural networks. Thereby, the emphasis is on versatility and flexibility for the user in terms of the applications and the choice of its HPs to be optimized. Moreover, the optimization procedure - which is usually a very time-consuming task should be performed in a highly parallel way on the HPC system Taurus at TU Dresden. To this end, a Bayesian stochastic optimization algorithm (TPE) has been implemented on the Taurus system and connected to a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI). In addition to the automatic optimization service, there is a variety of tools for analyzing and graphically displaying the results of the optimization. The application of OmniOpt to a practical problem from material science is presented as an example.
