Intel Xeon Phi (MIC architecture) is a relatively new accelerator chip, which combines large-scale shared memory parallelism with wide SIMD lanes. Mapping applications on a node with such an architecture to achieve high parallel efficiency is a major challenge. In this paper, we focus on developing a system for heterogeneous graph processing, which is able to utilize both a many-core Xeon Phi and a multi-core CPU on one node. We propose a simple programming API with an intuitive interface for expressing SIMD parallelism. We develop efficient techniques for supporting our high-level API, focusing on exploiting wide SIMD lanes, massive number of cores, and partitioning of the work across CPU and accelerator, while handling the irregularity of graph applications. The components of our runtime system include a condensed static memory buffer, which supports efficient message insertion and SIMD message reduction while keeping memory requirements low, and specifically for MIC, a pipelining scheme for efficient message generation by avoiding frequent locking operations. Besides, a hybrid graph partitioning module is able to effectively partition the workload between the CPU and the MIC, ensuring balanced workload and low communication overhead. The main observations from our experimental evaluation using five popular applications are: for MIC executions, pipelining scheme is up to 3.36x faster than a naive approach using locking based message generation, and the speedup over OpenMP ranges from 1.17 to 4.15. Heterogeneous CPU-MIC execution achieves a speedup of up to 1.41 over the better of the CPU-only and MIC-only executions.

Text Extraction plays an important role in finding valuable information. As a result of rapid growth of available multimedia documents on web and increasing requirement for information, identification, indexing and retrieval, several research have been done on text extraction. Here, a methodology to build a system for text extraction has been presented that is designed to provide support to the applications like Natural Language processing that requires the data to be in specific format. The data from various formats is extracted and is easily exported to a database. So this tool will be highly useful for creation of data repository and data bank. Also, to speed up the extraction from large size files, research was done and so, large size files are split into small size chunks and efficient use of parallel processing is done to provide faster results. Along with that, Bilingual support is provided, i.e., files of both English and Hindi language can be easily extracted, building respective data banks. Keywords are the important terms, sometimes called, index terms that contain some kind of valuable information about the document. Automatic keyword extraction is the task to identify a small set of words, which can be designated as keywords for that document, and thus provide a brief idea about the document. An effective Keyword Extraction technique has been discussed that can be applied to extract keywords effectively, that uniquely identify a document. A summary is a shortened version of a text of the document that describes the main points of the original document in brief. Automatic summarisation is the task of generating a summary of any input document by the computer. This summary can be used instead for reading the whole content/text resulting in particularly interested.

Graphics processing units (GPUs) have been increasingly used to accelerate irregular applications such as graph and sparse-matrix computation. Graph coloring is a key building block for many graph applications. The first step of many graph applications is graph coloring/partitioning to obtain sets of independent vertices for subsequent parallel computations. However, parallelization and optimization of coloring for GPUs have been a challenge for programmers. This paper studies approaches to implementing graph coloring on a GPU and characterizes their program behaviors with different graph structures. We also investigate load imbalance, which can be the main cause for performance bottlenecks. We evaluate the effectiveness of different optimization techniques, including the use of work stealing and the design of a hybrid algorithm. We are able to improve graph coloring performance by approximately 25% compared to a baseline GPU implementation on an AMD RadeonTMHD 7950 GPU. We also analyze some important factors affecting performance.

Many "big data" applications must tame velocity (processing data in-motion) and variety (processing many different types of data) *** research on knowledge representation and reasoning has focused on the variety of data, devising data representation and processing techniques that promote integration and reasoning on available data to extract implicit information. On the other hand, the event and stream processing community has focused on the velocity of data, producing systems that efficiently operate on streams of data on-the-fly according to pre-deployed processing rules or queries. Several recent works explore the synergy between stream processing and reasoning to fully capture the requirements of modern data intensive applications, thus giving birth to the research domain of stream *** tutorial paper offers an overview of the theoretical and technological achievements in stream reasoning, highlighting the key benefits and limitations of existing approaches, and discussing the open challenges and the opportunities for future research. The paper mainly targets researchers and practitioners in the area of event and stream processing. The paper aims to stimulate the discussion on stream reasoning and to further promote the integration of reasoning techniques within event and stream processing systems in three ways: (i) by presenting an active research domain, where researchers on event and stream processing can apply their expertise; (ii) by discussing techniques and technologies that can help advancing the state of the art in event and stream processing; (iii) by identifying the open problems in the field of stream reasoning, and drawing attention to promising research directions.

The runtime configuration of parallel and distributed applications remains a mysterious art. To tune an application on a particular system, the end-user must choose the number of machines, the number of cores per task, the data partitioning strategy, and so on, all of which result in a combinatorial explosion of choices. While one might try to exhaustively evaluate all choices in search of the optimal, the end user's goal is simply to run the application once with reasonable performance by avoiding terrible configurations. To address this problem, we present a hybrid technique based on regression models for tuning data intensive bioinformatics applications: the sequential computational kernel is characterized empirically and then incorporated into an ab initio model of the distributed system. We demonstrate this technique on the commonly-used applications BWA, Bowtie2, and BLASR and validate the accuracy of our proposed models on clouds and clusters.

The pupil detection and tracking is an important step for developing a human-computer interaction system. To develop a human eye-computer interaction system, we examine pupil detection and tracking by image processing techniques. In the image processing techniques, the illumination directly influences the image quality in general. If influences of illumination is little, we can obtain an image of good image quality. The subsequent image processing techniques are expected almost to succeed. In this paper, in order to avoid the influences of illumination, we have tried to combine the hardware constitution of an infrared light-emitting diode (LED) light, a sensitive infrared camera, and an infrared (IR) filter. In the experiment with this hardware constitution, we investigate the effects of the pupil detection and tracking by image processing techniques for a human eye-computer interaction system.

To satisfy more and more complicated requirements on information recording, processing, exchange etc. in newly developed intelligent satellites, a distributed storage system is designed based on SpaceWire network in satellite platform. In this distributed storage system, a SpaceWire router unit serving as the core device of star network connects several nodes, including onboard computers, namely, satellite management unit (SMU), data interface units (DIU) and other nodes like attitude and orbit sensors, space environment monitor instruments and payload controllers, etc. A certain number of standard flash memory modules are separately incorporated into SMU and DIUs to provide comprehensive data recording and exchange service for all nodes in the network. All memory modules are centrally controlled by SMU software to store authorized data in specific type files and retrieve data according to policies set by remote memory access protocol commands. Memory modules that can run in parallel in the distributed storage system produce very high data throughput, which boosts satellite platform capability to a great extent. Backup mechanism among memory modules is deployed and any module can be replaced by others when it meets failure, this makes the storage system robust and reliable. Testing and verification work performed on the distributed storage system shows that the system works quite well and also reveals its attractive effect on improving satellite platform efficiency.

Passive acoustic localization is an important technique in a wide variety of monitoring applications, ranging from healthcare over biological survey to structural health monitoring of buildings. If the subject of interest emits a recognizable sound and is picked up by a distributed array of microphones it is possible to measure the difference in arrival times and reconstruct the source positions. This requires the microphones to be synchronized up to a fraction of the expected time differences of arrivals in order for the system to be able to produce accurate location estimates. In this paper we take a closer look at the techniques required to synchronize a network of sensors, connected through a low-power RF-communication link, in a distributed manner, ie. without the presence of a master node. The absence of a master node makes the network more robust against the failure of a single node. We took inspiration from the synchronization technique observed in some species of fireflies. A synchronized pseudo random number is embedded in the captured data as a marker to re-align the data-streams in time in a post-processing stage.

Handling of Big Data and cloud computing are the two important prime concerns which have become more and more popular in recent years. Due to tremendous hike in data production, the need for the efficient processing, transaction storage or retrieval, and management of the structured and unstructured data have become one of the important issues of the IT industry. In this paper, we examine the concept of evolution of various distributed file systems, advantages, and limitations with respect to the cloud computing paradigm. distributed File System is a client-based application which permits its users to access, process and modify the data which is stored on a remote server as if it existed on their local systems. The Google file system (GFS), a proprietary distributed file system was developed by Google to meet its own growing big data need, which involved the utilization of commodity hardware in managing the massive generation of raw data. Inspired by GFS, Hadoop distributed File System (HDFS) was developed, which is an open-source community project. It is designed to store large chunks of data sets consistently as well as providing high bandwidth sets for streaming data on client based applications. In this paper, we describe the GFS and HDFS models in detail and relate these two distributed file systems on the basis of their properties and characteristic behavior in different environments. We also discuss several techniques and modifications to prevent and mitigate the limitations of these file systems.

Extraction of useful information from large datasets is one of the most important research problem. Association rule mining is one of the best methods for this purpose. Finding possible associations between items in large transaction based datasets (finding frequent patterns) is most important part of the association rule mining. There exists many algorithms to find frequent patterns but Apriori algorithm always remains a preferred choice due to its ease of implementation and natural tendency to be parallelized. Many single-machine based Apriori variants exist but massive amount of data available these days is above capacity of a single machine. Therefore, to meet the demands of this ever-growing huge data, there is a need of multiple machines based Apriori algorithm. For these type of distributed applications, mapreduce is a popular fault-tolerant framework. Hadoop is one of the best open-source software framework with mapreduce approach for distributed storage and distributed processing of huge datasets using clusters built from commodity hardware. But heavy disk I/O operation at each iteration of a highly iterative algorithm like Apriori makes hadoop inefficient. A number of map reduce based platforms are being developed for parallel computing in recent years. Among them, two platforms, namely, Spark and Flink have attracted lot of attention because of their inbuilt support to distributed computations. Earlier we had proposed a reduced-Apriori algorithm on Spark platform which outperforms parallel Apriori, firstly because of use of Spark and secondly because of the improvement we proposed in standard Apriori. Therefore, present work is a natural sequel of our earlier work and targets on implementing, testing and benchmarking Apriori on Apache Flink and compares it with Spark implementation.
