unlike the existing relational, hierarchical and object-oriented schemes, associative models can analyze data in similar ways to which our brain links information. Such interactions when implemented in voluminous data clouds can assist in searching for overarching relations in complex and highly distributed data sets with speed and accuracy. In this paper, a different perspective of data recognition will be considered. Rather than looking at conventional approaches, such as statistical computations and deterministic learning schemes, this paper will be focusing on distributed processing approach for scalable data recognition and processing through applying an access scheme that will enable fast data retrieval across multiple records and data segments associatively, utilizing a parallel approach. Doing so will yield a new form of database-like functionality that can scale up or down over the available infrastructure without interruption or degradation, dynamically and automatically. In our proposed model, data records are treated as patterns. As a result, data storage and retrieval is performed using a distributed pattern recognition approach that is implemented through the integration of loosely-coupled computational networks, followed by a divide-and-distribute approach that facilitates distribution of these networks within the cloud dynamically.

High-throughput molecular biology techniques are widely used to identify physical interactions between genetic elements located throughout the human genome. Chromosome Conformation Capture (3C) and other related techniques allow to investigate the spatial organisation of chromosomes in the cell's natural state. Recent results have shown that there is a large correlation between co-localization and co-regulation of genes, but these important information are hampered by the lack of biologists-friendly analysis and visualisation software. In this work we introduce NuChart-II, a tool for Hi-C data analysis that provides a gene-centric view of the chromosomal neighbourhood in a graph-based manner. NuChart-II is an efficient and highly optimized C++ re-implementation of a previous prototype package developed in R. Representing Hi-C data using a graph-based approach overcomes the common view relying on genomic coordinates and permits the use of graph analysis techniques to explore the spatial conformation of a gene neighbourhood.

Warmup is a crucial issue in sampled microarchitectural simulation to avoid performance bias by constructing accurate states for micro-architectural structures before each sampling unit. Not until very recently have researchers proposed Time-Based Sampling (TBS) for the sampled simulation of multi-threaded applications. However, warmup in TBS is challenging and complicated, because (i) full functional warmup in TBS causes very high overhead, limiting overall simulation speed;(ii) traditional adaptive functional warmup for sampling single-threaded applications cannot be readily applied to TBS;and (iii) checkpointing is inflexible (even invalid) due to the huge storage requirements and the variations across different runs for multi-threaded applications. In this work, we propose Shorter On-Line (SOL) warmup, which employs a two-stage strategy, using 'prime' warmup in the first stage, and an extended 'No-State-Loss (NSL)' method in the second stage. SOL is a single-pass, on-line warmup technique that addresses the warmup challenges posed in TBS in parallel simulators. SOL is highly accurate and efficient, providing a good trade-off between simulation accuracy and speed, and is easily deployed to different TBS techniques. For the PARSEC benchmarks on a simulated 8-core system, two state-of-the-art TBS techniques with SOL warmup provide a 7.2x and 37x simulation speedup over detailed simulation, respectively, compared to 3.1x and 4.5x under full warmup. SOL sacrifices only 0.3% in absolute execution time prediction accuracy on average.

One of the most important topics in Human-Centered Computing (HCC) is to recognise human's activities. In this paper, the technology of wireless-based activity recognition is introduced. By using wireless signals, one can achieve Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) recognition without carrying any devices. Also, it is easy to deploy a wireless-based recognition system due to the ubiquity of wireless communication systems. The basic idea is to detect different characteristics of signal propagation that correspond to the distinct human behaviors. As a result, action recognition is performed by analyzing the distinguishable features of signal propagation. This paper introduces the basic principles and applications of wireless-based activity recognition, and discusses the challenges and related performance metrics. Finally, open problems are discussed to point out the future research trends.

The electric grid is becoming more complex due to implementation of distributed generation, widespread use of power electronic devices and all types of dynamic and non-linear loads. As a consequence, harmonic pollution is increasing and it presents non-stationary characteristics that demand advanced signal processing techniques. Several methods have been proposed in order to analyze these time-varying harmonics. Among these methods, this paper shows the implementation of the Slide Window Recursive DFT in a microcontroller system. This method is suitable to track harmonics in time. Moreover, it has fast algorithm which allow it to compute and display time varying harmonics in real time. Hardware and software developments are presented for real time applications. The system is tested using dynamic and non-linear loads and power electronic devices.

Streaming languages are adequate for expressing many applications quite naturally and have been proven to be a good approach for taking advantage of the intrinsic parallelism of modern CPU architectures. While numerous works focus on improving the throughput of streaming programs, we rather focus on satisfying quality-of-service requirements of streaming applications executed along-side non-streaming processes. We monitor synchronous dataflow (SDF) programs at runtime both at the application and system levels in order to identify violations of quality-of-service requirements. Our monitoring requires the programmer to provide the expected throughput of its application (e.g 25 frames per second for a video decoder), then takes full benefit from the compilation of the SDF graph to detect bottlenecks in this graph and identify causes among processor or memory overloading. It can then be used to perform dynamic adaptations of the applications in order to optimize the use of computing and memory resources.

Today's scientific applications increasingly involve large amounts of input/output data that must be moved among multiple computing facilities via wide-area networks (WANs). The bandwidth of WANs, however, is growing at a much smaller rate and thus becoming a bottleneck. Moreover, the network bandwidth has not been viewed as a limited resource, and thus coordinated allocation is lacking. Uncoordinated scheduling of competing data transfers over shared network links results in suboptimal system performance and poor user experiences. To address these problems, we propose a data transfer scheduler to coordinate and schedule data transfers between distributed computing facilities over WANs. Specifically, the scheduler prioritizes and allocates resources to data transfer requests based on user-centric utility functions in order to achieve maximum overall user satisfaction. We conducted trace-based simulation and demonstrated that our data transfer scheduling algorithms can considerably improve data transfer performance as well as quantified user satisfaction compared with traditional first-come, first-serve or short-job-first approaches.

This paper discusses FPGA implementation of Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters using distributed Arithmetic (DA) which substitute multiply and accumulate operations with a series of Look-Up-Table (LUT) accesses. parallel FIR digital filter can be used either for high speed or low-power applications. The distributed arithmetic provides a multiplication-free method for calculating inner products of fixed-point data, based on table lookups of pre calculated partial products. The implementation results are provided to demonstrate a high-speed and low power proposed architecture. The proposed filter is implemented in very high speed integrated circuit hardware description language (VHDL) and verified via simulation. The proposed method offers average reductions of 60% in the number of LUT, 40% reduction in occupied slices and 50% reduction in the number gates for parallel FIR filter implementation. Most mass data processing applications nowadays often need long, continuous, and uninterrupted data access. parallel/distributed file systems often use multiple metadata servers to manage the global namespace and provide a reliability guarantee. With the rapid increase of data amount and system scale, the probability of hardware or software failures keeps increasing, which easily leads to multiple points of failures. Metadata service reliability has become a crucial issue as it affects file and directory operations in the event of failures. Existing reliable metadata management mechanisms can provide fault tolerance but have disadvantages in system availability, state consistence, and performance overhead. This paper introduces a new highly reliable policy called MAMS (multiple actives multiple standbys) to ensure multiple metadata service reliability in file systems. Different from traditional strategies, the MAMS divides metadata servers into different replica groups and maintains more than one standby node for failover in each group. Combining the global view with distributed protocols, the MAMS achieves an automatic state transition and service takeover. We have implemented the MAMS policy in a prototyping file system and conducted extensive tests to validate and evaluate it. The experimental results confirm that the MAMS policy can achieve a faster transparent fault tolerance in different error scenarios with less influence on metadata operations. Compared with typical designs in Hadoop Avatar, Hadoop HA, and Boom-FS file systems, the mean time to recovery (MTTR) with the MAMS was reduced by 80.23%, 65.46% and 28.13%, respectively.
