General purpose graphics processing units (GPUs) have become a promising solution to process massive data by taking advantages of multithreading. Thanks to thread-level parallelism, GPU-accelerated applications improve the overall system performance by up to 40 times, compared to CPU-only architecture. However, data-intensive GPU applications often generate large amount of irregular data accesses, which results in cache thrashing and contention problems. The cache thrashing in turn can introduce a large number of off-chip memory accesses, which not only wastes tremendous energy to move data around on-chip cache and off-chip global memory, but also significantly limits system performance due to many stalled load/store instructions. In this work, we redesign the shared last-level cache (LLC) of GPU devices by introducing non-volatile memory (NVM), which can address the cache thrashing issues with low energy consumption. Specifically, we investigate two architectural approaches, one of each employs a 2D planar resistive random-access memory (RRAM) as our baseline NVM-cache and a 3D-stacked RRAM technology. Our baseline NVM-cache replaces the SRAM-based L2 cache with RRAM of similar area size; a memory die consists of eight subarrays, one of which a small fraction of memristor island by constructing 512x512 matrix. Since the feature size of SRAM is around 125 F2 (while that of RRAM around 4 F2), it can offer around 30x bigger storage capacity than the SRAM-based cache. To make our baseline NVM-cache denser, we proposed 3D-stacked NVM-cache, which piles up four memory layers, and each of them has a single pre-decode logic.

Limited battery power has long been a challenge for mobile applications. As a result, the work in power monitoring and management has attracted great interests. In this paper, we propose a model to estimate power consumption of mobile applications at run-time, based on application-specific per-action power profiling. In addition, we have developed on-line optimization techniques which help maximize users' experience while conserving power. Our power model is lightweight and flexible, in that it can be used by any mobile applications as a plug-in, and it can support user-defined optimization mechanisms. This approach has been evaluated using a case study, a mobile application for field studies, and the experimental results show that our model accurately captures power consumption of the application, and the model can be used to optimize the power consumption based on users' needs.

Energy consumption optimization of HPC applications inherently requires measurements for reference and comparison. However, most of today's systems lack the necessary hardware support for power or energy measurements. Furthermore, in-band data availability is preferred for specific optimization techniques such as auto-tuning. For this reason, we present in-band energy consumption models for the IBM POWER7 processor based on hardware counters. We demonstrate that linear regression is a suitable means for modeling energy consumption, and we rely on already available, highlevel benchmarks for training instead of self-written or handtuned micro-kernels. We compare modeling efforts for different instruction mixes caused by two compilers (GCC and IBM XL) as well as various multi-threading usage scenarios, and validate across our training benchmarks and two real-world applications. Results show mean errors of approximately 1% and overall max errors of 5.3% for GCC.

Verification of distributed business processes typically relies on Petri-net-based process models, which allow for a natural modeling and analysis of aspects like parallelism and message exchange. Unfortunately, such a process model is seldom complete and precise today, mainly because the available techniques for its derivation neglect process data in favor of a feasible verification. In this paper, we present an approach for deriving more precise process models in terms of a transforming process-to-Petri-net compiler, which takes as input a business process and generates as output a Petri net model for the process which can subsequently be used for verification. However, in contrast to a conventional compiler, its objective is not to result in efficient runtime code but rather to produce a most-precise though still effectively verifiable Petri-net-based process model.

Modern experimental setups generate prolonged and intense data streams. For example, non-contact measurement techniques PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry), based on continuous image processing, are widely used in the experimental aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. These experimental stereo or volumetric velocimetry 3D PIV setups are able to generate long-lasting and intensive flows of images by using two or more cameras. High computational complexity of the image processing algorithms is the main limiting factor in the conditions of the low computational performance of PIV setups itself. Removal of these limitations by moving image processing tasks on remote supercomputer by using our proposed technology "distributed PIV", which will allow users to apply their new high-precision parallel algorithms in a real-time and implement feedback to the experimental setup. This paper describes innovative technology for high-performance processing of the intensive flows of the structured data generated by an experimental setup and delivered through a high-speed DWDM backbone directly into computing nodes of a remote supercomputer. A high BDP (Bandwidth-Delay Product) problem case in the design of protocols such as TCP in respect of performance tuning to achieve maximum network throughput is solved by designed middleware. The effectiveness of the proposed technology has been proven as a result of the natural distributed experiment, which combines the experimental setup and supercomputer through the 10 Gbps and 900 km length channel. This experiment illustrates possibility of using the technology for the unique physical experiments.

Intel (R) Xeon Phi (TM) coprocessor-based clusters offer high compute and memory performance for parallel workloads and also support direct network access. Many real world applications are significantly impacted by network characteristics and to maximize the performance of such applications on these clusters, it is particularly important to effectively saturate network bandwidth and/or hide communications latency. We demonstrate how to do so using techniques such as pipelined DMAs for data transfer, dynamic chunk sizing, and better asynchronous progress. We also show a method for, and the impact of avoiding serialization and maximizing parallelism during application communication phases. Additionally, we apply application optimizations focused on balancing computation and communication in order to hide communication latency and improve utilization of cores and of network bandwidth. We demonstrate the impact of our techniques on three well-known and highly optimized HPC kernels running natively on the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor. For the Wilson-Dslash operator from Lattice QCD, we characterize the improvements from each of our optimizations for communication performance, apply our method for maximizing concurrency during communication phases, and show an overall 48% improvement from our previously best published result. For HPL/LINPACK, we show 68.5% efficiency with 97 TFLOPs on 128 Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors;the first ever reported native HPL efficiency on a coprocessor-based supercomputer. For FFT, we show 10.8 TFLOPs using 1024 Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors on the TACC Stampede cluster;the highest reported performance on any Intel Architecture-based cluster and the first such result to be reported on a coprocessor-based supercomputer.

In this paper we present several solutions to Security Surveillance and their applications while utilizing parallel processing for improved performance. The algorithms presented in this paper are explained in detail and their implementations are provided for free for educational purposes. These algorithms with their implementations are being taught in our parallel processing course utilizing NVidia's Cuda language and framework. We chose the topic of Security Surveillance in our parallel processing course because the results are visual and applicable in many situations such as Surveillance of parking lots (monitoring our car for example), dormitory rooms, offices, etc. Image processing techniques and algorithms are discussed in this paper, and extended to real-time high definition video processing focusing on surveillance.

Workflows play an important role in expressing and executing scientific applications. In recent years, a variety of computational sites and resources have emerged, and users often have access to multiple resources that are geographically distributed. These computational sites are heterogeneous in nature and performance of different tasks in a workflow varies from one site to another. Additionally, users typically have a limited resource allocation at each site. In such cases, judicious scheduling strategy is required in order to map tasks in the workflow to resources so that the workload is balanced among sites and the overhead is minimized in data transfer. Most existing systems either run the entire workflow in a single site or use naive approaches to distribute the tasks across sites or leave it to the user to optimize the allocation of tasks to distributed resources. This results in a significant loss in productivity for a scientist. In this paper, we propose a multi-site workflow scheduling technique that uses performance models to predict the execution time on different resources and dynamic probes to identify the achievable network throughput between sites. We evaluate our approach using real world applications in a distributed environment using the Swift distributed execution framework and show that our approach improves the execution time by up to 60% compared to the default schedule.

For spatially distributed targets encountered in radar and sonar applications, direct application of subspace-based methods usually do not lead to an accurate estimation of the direction and angular extent of the signal arrivals. If the spatial distribution of the targets can be parameterized with a known model a priori, the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problems can be simplified as parameter estimation problems. However, these methods do not apply when the targets are not parameterizable. Motivated by this fact, we propose an effective approach for the DOA estimation of nonparametric spatially extended targets. In the proposed approach, the spatially extended targets are modeled as a continuous sparse structure, which are effectively estimated using the Bayesian compressive sensing techniques based on a paired spike-and-slab prior accounting for the angular target spread. In particular, the problem is examined under a collocated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar platform. Signal transmission at multiple coprime transmit frequencies are also considered to achieve increased degrees-of-freedom. The group sparsity of the targets across different frequencies is exploited to achieve improved DOA estimation performance.

The goal of this paper, is to present a new massively parallel virtual machine model, designed for parallel and distributed high performance computing on a distributed system. The proposed model allows us to build a polymorphic grid computing assigned to solve fine grained parallel problems over different machine structures. This model is built using distributed Virtual Processors Units (VPU). Each VPU corresponds to a mobile agent deployed in a physical processing unit. Each physical processing unit is associated to a node of the distributed system. The VPUs are designed to communicate with each other asynchronously by exchanging, in local or remote way, ACL messages (Agent Communication Language) containing data, instructions or any task to be performed. In this model a special agent is designed to represent the host of the parallel virtual machine. This agent manages the life cycle of VPUs, the load balancing system, and parallel applications to run. In this model VPUs can also use a virtual shared memory represented by hierarchical mobile agents. All the properties offered to the proposed model, are easily designed thanks to the flexibility and the mobility of the multi agent systems.
