distributed applications that allow replicated state to deviate in favour of increasing throughput still need to ensure such state achieves consistency at some point. This is achieved via compensating conflicting updates or undoing some updates to resolve conflicts. When causal relationships exist across updates that must be maintained then conflicts may result in previous updates also needing to be undone or compensated for. Therefore, an ability to manage contention across the distributed domain to preemptively lower conflicts as a result of causal infringements without hindering the throughput achieved from weaker consistency is desirable. In this paper we present such a system. We exploit the causality inherent in the application domain to improve overall system performance. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach with simulated benchmarked performance results. © 2013 IFIP international Federation for Information processing.

Scaling up the sparse matrix-vector multiplication has been at the heart of numerous studies in both academia and industry. The massive parallelism of graphics processing units offers tremendous performance in many high-performance computing applications. In this work, we discuss performance analysis for parallel implementation of sparse matrix-vector multiplication using the conjugate gradient algorithm that are efficiently implemented on the NVIDIA CUDA architecture to exploit the massive compute power of today's GPUs. The results show that in comparison to the parallel CPU implementations, the parallel version of the conjugate gradient algorithm on GPU is in average 30 times faster depending on computational kernels. © 2013 IEEE.

Polygon overlay is one of the complex operations in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In GIS, a typical polygon tends to be large in size often consisting of thousands of vertices. Sequential algorithms for this problem are in abundance in literature and most of the parallel algorithms concentrate on parallelizing edge intersection phase only. Our research aims to develop parallel algorithms to find overlay for two input polygons which can be extended to handle multiple polygons and implement it on General Purpose Graphics processing Units (GPGPU) which offers massive parallelism at relatively low cost. Moreover, spatial data files tend to be large in size (in GBs) and the underlying overlay computation is highly irregular and compute intensive. MapReduce paradigm is now standard in industry and academia for processing large-scale data. Motivated by MapReduce programming model, we propose to develop and implement scalable distributed algorithms to solve large-scale overlay processing in this dissertation. © 2013 IEEE.

Recent advances in distributed computing have made it possible to achieve high availability on traditional systems and thus serve them as reliable services. For several offline computational applications, such as fine grained batch processing, their parallel nature in addition to weak consistency requirements allowed a more trivial transition. On the other hand, on-line processing systems such as Complex Event processing (CEP) still maintain a monolithic architecture, being able to offer high expressiveness and vertical scalability at the expense of low distribution. Despite attempts to design dedicated distributed CEP systems there is potential for existing systems to benefit from a sustainable cloud deployment. In this work we address the main challenges of providing such a CEP service with a focus on reliability, since it is the most crucial aspect of that transition. Our approach targets low average detection latency and sustain-ability by leveraging event delegation mechanisms present on existing stream execution platforms. It also introduces redundancy and transactional logging to provide improved fault tolerance and partial recovery. Our performance analysis illustrates the benefits of our approach and shows acceptable performance costs for on-line CEP exhibited by the fault tolerance mechanisms we introduced. © 2013 IEEE.

Utilizing multi-cores is now the norm in order to increase performance while also saving energy. The need to break the physical limits of uniprocessing (by branch prediction or RAW dependencies etc.) while being cost and power effective at the same time were the motivation for the scientific and industrial communities to focus on multi-processor architectures. Howver, the parallelization of existing applications has very frequently proved to be a cumbersome task and in many cases the parallel application is slower than the original serial one. This work demonstrates the parallelization of one high-end bioinformatics application (multiple sequence alignment for amino acids or nucleotide sequences "MAFFT") as well as a novel security application (fingerprinting recognition "NBIS") on a highly parallel, yet a very low cost, system. We initially demonstrate the method for parallelizing the applications and then we focus on the end performance. One application is significantly accelerated when the 7 cores of the system are utilized whereas the other cannot get any gain when being ported to more than one cores;we also demonstrate certain optimization techniques. We believe that this paper can act as a guideline for programmers that need to port their serial code to a parallel machine.

Multidimensional arrays are commonly used in scientific and engineering applications. The disk layout for the multidimensional arrays will obviously affect the performance of data querying. Homogeneous Replica method are widely used to maintain the data reliability in most of the distributed storage systems and used to improve the data locality in some parallel processing systems. In this paper, we propose a novel method, that is heterogeneous replicas, to makes better use of the replica method to optimize the performance of multidimensional arrays querying. The experimental results shows that heterogeneous replicas method can significantly reduce the overhead of disk I/O for most of the queries. With three heterogeneous replicas, the performance of random generated range queries for multidimensional datasets can be improved for 30% on the average. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a framework for adaptive admission control and management of a large number of dynamic input streams in parallel stream processing engines. The framework takes as input any available information about input stream behaviors and the requirements of the query processing layer, and adaptively decides how to adjust the entry points of streams to the system. As the optimization decisions propagate early from input management layer to the query processing layer, the size of the cluster is minimized, the load balance is maintained, and latency bounds of queries are met in a more effective and timely manner. Declarative integration of external meta-data about data sources makes the system more robust and resource-efficient. Additionally, exploiting knowledge about queries moves data partitioning to the input management layer, where better load balance for query processing can be achieved. We implemented these techniques as a part of the Borealis stream processing system and conducted experiments showing the performance benefits of our framework. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

Current application of GPU processors for parallel computing tasks show excellent results in terms of speed-ups compared to CPU processors. However, there is no existing framework that enables automatic distribution of data and processing across multiple GPUs, modularity of kernel design, and efficient co-usage of CPU and GPU processors. All these elements are necessary conditions to enable users to easily perform 'Big Data' analysis, and to create their own modules for their desired processing functionality. We propose a framework for in-memory 'Big Text Data' analytics that provides mechanisms for automatic data segmentation, distribution, execution, and result retrieval across multiple cards (CPU, GPU & FPGA) and machines, and a modular design for easy addition of new GPU kernels. The architecture and components of the framework such as multi-card data distribution and execution, data structures for efficient memory access, algorithms for parallel GPU computation, and result retrieval are described in detail, and some of the kernels in the framework are evaluated using Big Data versus multi-core CPUs to demonstrate the performance and feasibility of using it for 'Big Data' analytics, providing alternative and cheaper HPC solution.

A recent trend in communication networks - sometimes referred to as fog computing - offers to execute computational tasks close to the access points of the networks. This enables real-time applications, like mobile Complex Event processing (CEP), to significantly reduce end-to-end latencies and bandwidth usage. Most work studying the placement of operators in such an environment completely disregards the migration costs. However, the mobility of users requires frequent migration of operators, together with possibly large state information, to meet latency restrictions and save bandwidth in the infrastructure. This paper presents a placement and migration method for providers of infrastructures that incorporate cloud and fog resources. It ensures application-defined end-to-end latency restrictions and reduces the network utilization by planning the migration ahead of time. Furthermore, we present how the application knowledge of the CEP system can be used to improve current live migration techniques for Virtual Machines (VMs) to reduce the required bandwidth during the migration. Our evaluations show that we safe up to 49% of the network utilization with perfect knowledge about a users mobility pattern and up to 27% of the network utilization when considering the uncertainty of those patterns.
