As robots become increasingly integrated into human life, personalizing human-robot interactions (HRI) is crucial for improving user acceptance, engagement, and interaction quality. However, personalizing HRI poses a unique challenge due to the diversity of human personality traits. This paper proposes a method that leverages large language models (LLMs) to dynamically tailor robot conversations according to the Big Five (OCEAN) personality traits. Our novelty lies in using user personality traits to shape robots' verbal responses and implementing contextual action generation for gestures. This study addresses two primary research questions: (1) Does adapting robots' verbal responses based on user personality traits improve communication satisfaction? (2) How does the addition of context-appropriate gestures further enhance user satisfaction? We used Goldberg's personality trait measurement scale (1992) to assess 26 participants who engaged in conversations with an LLM-powered Pepper robot on various topics. The quality of these interactions was self-reported using a revised version of Hecht's (1978) conversation satisfaction scale. Three experimental conditions were conducted: (i) Baseline: Standard LLM conversation, (ii) Personality-congruent: LLM-adjusted dialogue based on personality of participants, and (iii) Enhanced interaction: Personality adaptation plus dynamic gestures. For the third condition, we implemented contextually appropriate pre-defined animations and generated novel gestures by computing joint angle values in real time. Statistical analysis using ANOVA revealed significant differences in communication satisfaction across the three conditions (F=13.41, p<.001). Post-hoc analyses using Šidák's multiple comparison test showed significant pairwise differences: Condition 2 vs. 1: Δ Δmean 4.42, p = 0.02; Condition 3 vs. 1: Δ Δmean 8.23, p < 0.01; Condition 3 vs. 2: Δ Δmean 3.80, p = 0.05. In this paper, we present an experiment, designed to investigate and evaluate the scalability and the robustness aspects of mobile manipulation. The experiment involves performing variations of mobile pick and place actions and opening/closing environment containers in a human household. The robot is expected to act completely autonomously for extended periods of time. We discuss the scientific challenges raised by the experiment as well as present our robotic system that can address these challenges and successfully perform all the tasks of the experiment. We present empirical results and the lessons learned as well as discuss where we hit limitations.

As emotion plays a growing role in robotic research it is crucial to develop methods to analyze and compare among the wide range of approaches. To this end we present a survey of 1427 IEEE and ACM publications that include robotics and emotion. This includes broad categorizations of trends in emotion input analysis, robot emotional expression, studies of emotional interaction and models for internal processing. We then focus on 232 papers that present internal processing of emotion, such as using a human's emotion for better interaction or turning environmental stimuli into an emotional drive for robotic path planning. We conducted constant comparison analysis of the 232 papers and arrived at three broad categorization metrics- emotional intelligence, emotional model and implementation- each including two or three subcategories. The subcategories address the algorithm used, emotional mapping, history, the emotional model, emotional categories, the role of emotion, the purpose of emotion and the platform. Our results show a diverse field of study, largely divided by the role of emotion in the system, either for improved interaction, or improved robotic performance. We also present multiple future opportunities for research and describe intrinsic challenges common in all publications.

Deep reinforcement learning has made significant progress in robotic manipulation tasks and it works well in the ideal disturbance-free environment. However, in a real-world environment, both internal and external disturbances are inevitable, thus the performance of the trained policy will dramatically drop. To improve the robustness of the policy, we introduce the adversarial training mechanism to the robotic manipulation tasks in this paper, and an adversarial skill learning algorithm based on soft actor-critic (SAC) is proposed for robust manipulation. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate that the learned policy is robust to internal and external disturbances. Additionally, the proposed algorithm is evaluated in both the simulation environment and on the real robotic platform.
