CIMS plays an important role in the field of continuous processautomation. In this paper, the problem of process monitoring and control for alcohol production is first presented. A three-layer DCS is used for process measurement and monitoring, in which fuzzy logic-based PID controllers are utilized to fine-tune the key parameters. We also explore the optimal control strategy in both off-line and on-line optimization. The implementation details of these two proposed schemes under a CIMS information integration environment are further given.

This paper proposes a method of detecting movable paths during visual navigation for a robot operating in an unknown structured environment. The proposed approach detects and segments the floor by computing plane normals from motion fields in image sequences. A floor is a useful object for mobile robots in structured environments, because it presents traversable paths if existing static or dynamic objects are removed effectively. In spite of this advantage, it cannot be easily detected from 2D image. In this paper, some geometric features observed in the scene and assumptions about images are exploited so that a plane normal can be employed as an effective clue to separate the floor from the scene. In order to use the plane normal, two methods are proposed and integrated with a designed iterative refinement process. Then, the floor can be accurately detected even when mismatched point correspondences are obtained. The results of preliminary experiments on real data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Modern industry relies heavily on automated technical processes, even in process industries. They help to produce products with a higher quality in less time, using less energy and raw materials. The degree of automation and the complexity of these processes are still increasing. Today, processcontrol systems have graphical user interfaces that display an enormous amount of process information to be monitored by fewer and fewer operators. It seems there is no need for human control if a plant is fully automated. But if more automation is installed in a plant, the operators have less training in controlling the process manually. This can be crucial when exceptional process states occur. In such situations, operators have to make correct decisions to bring the process immediately back to a stable state. Due to a high degree of automation, operators do not have the opportunity to acquire the skills they need by controlling the process manually. In addition, long observation periods lead to reduced levels of vigilance. The likelihood of immediately detecting infrequent but important abnormal conditions is reduced. Furthermore, complexity from the operator's point of view is increased by a heterogeneous working environment involving different automation equipment and software products for process monitoring and control. It is exactly at this point that the innovative, user-centric design approach starts with its visualization concept for process monitoring and control. The distance between plant operators and production process is bridged based on an intuitive visualization of the current process situation. The objective of a user-centric design concept is to help engineers to develop and design human-machine interfaces that are more usable, therefore resulting in safer and more cost-effective processcontrol. Future manufacturing processes have to be highly adaptive and transformable in order to support short product life cycles and highly customized products. For an implementation of such a flexible, so-called Smart Factory, which is driven by massive proliferation and usage of tiny embedded, context-aware information and communication technologies, many challenges technical and social ones - have to be addressed. We identify major problems and focus on the location of objects and persons within manufacturing environments as an enabling key technology. Existing methods and possible solutions are evaluated and discussed. Thereby, we focus on the crucial aspect of privacy for workers when location systems are utilized. We also present a semi-automatic positioning approach that solves the discrepancy of guaranteeing the privacy of persons and highly accurate location tracking.

As user-created content increasingly becomes an ever more prominent element of modern game design, tools have been developed to aide in the creative process for several forms of digital media, including machinima. Because creating content that will be valued by the community is a challenging process, tools are needed that will assist novices in both technical realization and optimization of content. We are exploring tools for machinima authoring that use a 3-pronged approach: authoring via metaphor, performance, and automation. Future work involves using AI to provide feedback to machinima authors, suggesting sensible attributes for scenes based on prior input by acting as a surrogate audience.

The following paper introduces the performance evaluation of effective components in queries analysis and classification modules, as a part of the ETL management system. The main research focuses on usage of context-free grammars while analyzing queries arriving to the system. Also in the paper we present use of several methods of machine learning in a query processing time prediction. In previous research classifiers like Ridor were used, while query analysis was based on regular expression. Obtained results were quite encouraging and led to solutions presented in the paper.
