Building Information Modelling (BIM), as an object-oriented tool, has been the buzzword in Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector in recent years. The buzz has created a lot of promise of an imminent paradigm shift and productivity and lifecycle improvements in the AEC sector, and plenty of benefits are cited in the literature. Consequently, the word has reached the shipbuilding industry as well, which faces many similar productivity and lifecycle challenges as the AEC industry, and which is seeking similar advancements in digital tools that can bring around the change. As a result, the Finnish shipbuilding industry expressed interest in exploring what are the BIM-enabled best practices in the AEC sector, and which of these can potentially be transferred to the shipbuilding industry. This research explored these issues. Findings suggest that due to lack of mutual communication, the professionals across each industry believe the other to be doing better.

Medical imaging provides a non-invasive method to diagnose, monitor, and plan the treatment of disease inside the human body. The increasing prevalence of radiological scanners and prescription of their use has presented a significant challenge for radiologists in accurately diagnosing disease whilst dealing with a growing number of scans to review. recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially in machine learning, are enabling researchers to improve the patient experience, enhance the planning of medical treatments and increase the rate of examination of scans. In this study,a 2-dimensional (2d) U-net based deep learning model was used to automatically segment five organs of interest from Computed Tomography (CT) scans of the thoracic region. Comparable results were achieved in comparison to the top seven models from a prior thoracic organ segmentation challenge. The framework can perform the segmentation tasks within 20 seconds, reducing workload for radiologists and increasing throughput. This study shows that a simple U-net based framework can be sufficient for the task at hand rather than pursuing much more complicated architectures, depending upon the complexity of the problem. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of 3d interpolation on dice scores in anticipation of further research applications in mapping segments to a 3d volume render. We find performance degradation with respect to the dice score after mapping the masks to original dimensions.

Long dismissed as impossible, constructing reservoir models by modeling the fundamental processes that formed them should soon become a reality. recent enabling advances include: new algorithms, increases in computer speed, and new quantitative insights into the processes of flow and erosion. Though now viable, full implementation of process-based modeling for building reservoir models for simulation remains difficult. modeling physics and honoring known data such as logs and seismic remains extremely challenging. We will describe some examples of forward models and an example of a full process-based modeling application. We will discuss progress that has been made in conditioning these models to known data (eg. wells and seismic). We will also show some example workflows and technology for extracting value from digital analogs built using process-based modeling techniques. These workflows include the extraction of patterns and statistics for rule-based and geostatistical modeling. We call this type of orkflow, process-aided reservoir modeling. These new modeling methods are needed because current modeling practices cannot duplicate the natural order found in nature, neither can they reproduce the complex interactions of topography, flow, deposition and erosion;representing these interactions accurately is essential to modeling connectivity and reservoir flow behavior. Rule-based parametric and pattern-matching techniques can begin to replicate real geologic geometries, but no technique other than process-based modeling can provide the needed geologically realistic 3d volumes necessary for developing accurate rules or pattern training datasets. 3d seismic can provide some insight, but is limited in scale and cannot provide direct information on the flows and processes that must have been present to lay down a given deposit. Outcrops and modern data are generally limited to 2d with poor expression of the 3d. ©2008.

In many industrial applications such as autonomous vehicle guidance and robotic manipulations, reliable 3-d informations must be extracted from the scene in order to provide a robust description of the environment in which the system evolves. This paper presents the TRId sensor, a simple, fast, robust and accurate 3-d sensing device based on the Biris technology. TRId is limited to a lateral resolution of one point. Experimental results show that an accuracy better than 0.15% can be obtained for the depth component (Z) of 3-d points at a distance of 1.3 meter from a wooden black painted beam surface with an acquisition rate of 8.5 points/s.

We present in this paper a method to obtain automatically CAd models of industrial pipes from range images. The models are based on two geometric primitives, cylinders and torii, which are enough to represent most parts of the pipes. The images are obtained with an accurate long-distance laser range sensor developed for reverse engineering in industrial structures. The key issue for automatic CAd modeling is the automatic segmentation of the data into subsets of points corresponding to the desired primitives. To do so, we use differential geometry to segment lines of centers of curvature into straight and curved parts, corresponding to the cylinder and torus parts of the original image. differential geometry results being noisy and biased, we use an optimal approach for the computation of centers of curvature.

Face recognition is still a great challenge in biometrics research, because of the large variations of facial appearance, caused by head pose, lighting, facial expression, aging, etc. Among all possible variations, the biggest change of facial appearance in 2-dimensional (2d) face images probably comes from the three-dimensional (3d) head rotations. With the sensor technology advances, e.g., the recent RGB-d cameras, we study the advantage of using RGB-d images for face recognition, focusing on the challenge of 3d head pose variations. We propose an approach to face recognition robust to head rotations utilizing the RGB-d face images. Unlike the traditional 3d morphable model, our method does not need to learn a generic face model or take a complicated 3d to 2d face registration. We study what is the appropriate scheme to deal with pose variations in order to develop a robust system towards pose-invariant face recognition. Experiments on a public database show that our approach is effective and efficient for face recognition under significant pose changes. Our preliminary result demonstrates the advantages of using the RGB-d sensor for face recognition robust to large pose variations.

This paper reports on recent advances at the micro-computed tomography facility at the Australian National University. Since 2000 this facility has been a significant centre for developments in imaging hardware and associated software for image reconstruction, image analysis and image-based modelling. In 2010 a new instrument was constructed that utilises theoretically-exact image reconstruction based on helical scanning trajectories, allowing higher cone angles and thus better utilisation of the available X-ray flux. We discuss the technical hurdles that needed to be overcome to allow imaging with cone angles in excess of 60 degrees. We also present dynamic tomography algorithms that enable the changes between one moment and the next to be reconstructed from a sparse set of projections, allowing higher speed imaging of time-varying samples. Researchers at the facility have also created a sizeable distributed-memory image analysis toolkit with capabilities ranging from tomographic image reconstruction to 3d shape characterisation. We show results from image registration and present some of the new imaging and experimental techniques that it enables. Finally, we discuss the crucial question of image segmentation and evaluate some recently proposed techniques for automated segmentation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper an optical configuration based on autosynchronized laser scanning is proposed for the 3d measurement of road surfaces. The advantages of this technique over classical triangulation methods are exposed. The road inspection system developed at the National Optics Institute (NOI) using this type of laser telemetry is also presented. This system uses two autosynchronized laser scanners in order to obtain transverse 3d and intensity profiles of road surfaces. Also described are simple algorithms which detect and measure rutting and cracking conditions. Results include rut measurements on both real and simulated 3d road profiles and a crack map of an actual pavement section.

recent advances in domains such as High Performance Computing (HPC) and proliferation of Machine Learning have led to great strides in the domain of 3d model generation. Several technologies, such as the Metaverse, AR/VR applications and game development have benefited tremendously from this phenomenon as it makes the tedious and time-consuming process of 3d modeling convenient. In real-world applications such as gaming, virtual reality, and augmented reality, 3d models with predefined articulated structures are essential for immersive experiences and lifelike animations. The solution proposed in this paper aims to expedite the arduous process of manually annotating articulation points within 3d models, a prevalent necessity with current models. By integrating an automated articulation definition mechanism into our model, we streamline the animation workflow and enhance user efficiency. With a CLIP Score of 0.548, the 3d model itself is sufficiently high quality enough to serve this purpose. This functionality enables expedited animation creation and fosters smoother workflow by providing predefined articulation points within the 3d models. © 2024 IEEE.
