The need of better accuracy to analyze remote sensing (RS) data and radiative budget (RB) of Earth surfaces explains the demand of physical models of RS and RB data. dART (discrete Anisotropic Radiative Transfer) model is probably the most comprehensive three-dimensional (3d) physical model. Indeed, with original ray tracking and Monte Carlo methods for tracking radiation in the Earth and atmosphere from visible to thermal infrared wavelengths, it simulates the 3d RB and acquisitions of terrain / RS imaging radiometers and laser scanners, for any urban / natural landscape and any experimental / instrumental configuration. Paul Sabatier delivers free licenses for research and teaching activities. After introducing dART theory, we present recent advances: simulation of LidAR and airborne sensors, and modeling of specular interaction and polarization.

Nowadays, Fused deposition modeling (FdM) has accomplished huge proficiency in modelling and wide variety in products shape and size in the industry. Alongside with its development, many problems came up, one of which is to ensure the technical requirements of the parts such as: compressive strength, tensile strength, dimensional accuracy, etc. To solve this problem, new composite materials has been developing and at the same time correlative process parameters has been optimized to achieve the most optimal technical requirements of that material. In this paper, we focus on researching the effect of process parameters consist of: raster angle;build direction and layer thickness on the part's compressive strength made by one of the newest composite material which is the PLA-Copper filament. Central composite design (CCd) methodology is used to lower the experimental runs, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method is employed to investigate the process parameters in order to achieve optimal compressive strength.

We propose a method to generate a facial caricature depending on a simple method for corresponding 3-d facial images. In this method, we extract several facial parts regions each of which include facial parts of the face by using both gray and range images. The diagonal corners of the respective extracted regions are used to provide the informations on the correspondence between the faces. Therefore, by using this method, it is expectable to reduce the number of the feature points for the correspondence from more than several hundreds to ten or so. At the same time, this method makes it possible to extract boundaries of facial parts. In order to examine the feasibility of this method, we employ a usual corresponding method of the triangular patch as the reference. We generated the 3-d mean face and 3-d facial caricature to demonstrate experimentally the feasibility of the proposed method. It was clarified that the number of the correspondence points can be reduced to only 10% of the usual method.

Additive manufacturing is driving major innovations in many areas such as biomedical engineering. recent advances have enabled 3d printing of biocompatible materials and cells into complex 3d functional living tissues and organs using bioink. Inkjet-based bioprinting fabricates the tissue and organ constructs by ejecting droplets onto a substrate. Compared with microextrusion-based and laser-assisted bioprinting, it is very difficult to predict and control the droplet formation process (e.g., droplet velocity and size). To address this issue, this paper presents a new data-driven approach to predict droplet velocity and size in the inkjet-based bioprinting process. An imaging system was used to monitor the droplet formation process. To investigate the effects of excitation voltage, dwell time, and rise time on droplet velocity and droplet size, a full factorial design of experiments was conducted. Two predictive models were developed to predict droplet velocity and droplet size using random forests. The accuracy of the two predictive models was evaluated using the relative error. Experimental results have shown that the predictive models are capable of predicting droplet velocity and size with sufficient accuracy.

We report on recent extensions to a surface matching algorithm based on local 3d signatures. This algorithm was previously shown to be effective in view registration of general surfaces and in object recognition from 3d model databases. We describe extensions to the basic matching algorithm which will enable it to address several challenging and often overlooked problems encountered with real data. First, we describe extensions that allow us to deal with data sets with large variations in resolution and with large data sets for which computational efficiency is a major issue. The applicability of the enhanced matching algorithm is illustrated by an example application: the construction of large terrain maps and the construction of accurate 3d models from unregistered views. Second, we describe extensions that facilitate the use of 3d object recognition in cases in which the scene contains a large amount of clutter (e.g., the object occupies 1% of the scene) and in which the scene presents a high degree of confusion (e.g., the model shape is close to other shapes in the scene). Those last two extensions involve learning recognition strategies from the description of the model and from the performance of the recognition algorithm using Bayesian and memory based learning techniques, respectively. © 1999 IEEE.

Computation is often seen as information processing. Many biological systems may be investigated in terms of information storage, signaling, and data processing networks. Much of this data processing activity is embodied in structural transformations in spatial scales ranging from the molecular to cellular networks. The biomedical sciences make use of an increasingly powerful arsenal of tools and technologies for obtaining structural data as well as details of mass transport and the chemical and electrical signals that underlie these fundamental biological processes. For example, new staining techniques combined with computer-based electron microscope tomography, permit the clear imaging of chromatin filaments in the cell nucleus and filament networks in the cytoplasmic and extracellular space via the electron microscope. The application of tomographic reconstruction software developed at the National Center for Microscopy and imaging Research (NCMIR) enables detailed 3d reconstructions of the relevant biological structures and processes. In order to deal with fundamental issues related to information processing in biological systems, new data processing methods as well as advances in chemically sensitive probes and imaging technology must be applied across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. One class of increasingly useful tools for modeling biological systems, evaluating imaging technologies and characterizing the fidelity of digital processing has its roots in theoretical investigations in statistical mechanics, which arise from the concepts of information and entropy. We review how concepts of information and entropy may give new perspectives on the flow of information within biological systems, as well as our instrumentation and computer processing.

digital 3d plus color imaging is a growing field as it has many industrial applications. One of them is the precise understanding of optical properties of objects, which is possible to obtain from 3d plus brightness or color data. Those properties are usually important inspection criteria; for example, the specular sharpness of a coatted surface is usually related to the coating quality. This paper is related to a procedure for recovering the specular sharpness and other surface-related properties from objects. The current approach works on 3d plus brightness or color data, which are retrieved in two steps using a common structured-light triangulation-based technique and an ordinary non-structured spot light. Some experimental results obtained on industrial parts are also shown.

Geometric fusion of multiple sets of overlapping surface measurements is an important problem for complete 3d object or environment modelling. Fusion based on a discrete implicit surface representation enables fast reconstruction for complex object modelling. However, surfaces are represented at a single resolution resulting in impractical storage costs for accurate reconstruction of large objects. This paper addresses accurate reconstruction of surface models independent of object size. An incremental algorithm is presented for implicit surface representation of an arbitrary triangulated mesh in a volumetric envelope around the surface. A hierarchical volumetric structure is introduced for efficient representation by local approximation of the surface within a fixed error bound using the maximum voxel size. Multi-resolution geometric fusion is achieved by incrementally constructing a hierarchical surface representation with bounded error. Results are presented for validation of the multi-resolution representation accuracy and reconstruction of real objects. Multi-resolution geometric fusion achieves a significant reduction in representation cost for the same level of geometric accuracy.

Textured surface models of three-dimensional objects are gaining importance in computer graphics applications. These models often have to be merged from several overlapping partial models which have to be registered (i.e. the relative transformation between the partial models has to be determined) prior to the merging process. In this paper a method is presented that makes use of both camera-based depth information (e.g. from stereo) and the luminance image. The luminance information is exploited to determine corresponding point sets on the partial surfaces using an optical flow approach. Quaternions are then employed to determine the transformation between the partial models which minimizes the sum of the 3-d Euclidian distances between the corresponding point sets. In order to find corresponding points on the partial surfaces luminance information is linearized. The procedure is iterated until convergence is reached. In contrast to only using depth information, employing luminance speeds up convergence and reduces remaining degrees of freedom (e.g. when registering sphere-like shapes).

This paper investigates the interactions between sidewalk delivery robots and pedestrians in urban settings to evaluate pedestrian safety and robot efficiency in shared spaces. We developed a 3d digital twin environment model that allows realistic simulation of robot-human and robot-cityscape interactions, adopting the Pedestrian Aware Model (PAM) to ensure effective and safe navigation. Using an agent-based modeling approach, we analyze various scenarios involving pedestrians, wheelchair users, and robots sharing sidewalk spaces. Our findings reveal that robots do not inherently contribute to sidewalk congestion and can be programmed to maintain a buffer zone that allows for both safety and efficiency, suggesting their potential for smooth coexistence with pedestrians. We observed that robots caused most collisions, while pedestrians were primarily responsible for proximity violations of minimum distance thresholds, emphasizing the need for further research and strategies to reduce further the risks associated with these incidents. The results suggest that with careful design-oriented planning and continued research, robots can safely and comfortably share sidewalks with pedestrians, contributing to a more harmonious and efficient urban landscape. Our proposed simulation model can assist urban planners, policymakers, and researchers in evaluating the influence of various design interventions and policies on human-robot coexistence in cities, marking a crucial step toward accommodating both humans and robots in urban spaces.
