Remote sensing (RS) dedicated to the study of land surfaces benefits from more and more advanced sensors. However, the interpretation of RS data is often is often inaccurate due to the complexity of the observed land surfaces. Therefore, RS models, in particular physical models, that simulate RS observations of the three-dimensional (3d) landscapes are critical to correctly interpret RS data. dART is one of the most comprehensive 3d models of Earth-atmosphere optical radiative transfer (RT), from ultraviolet (UV) to thermal infrared (TIR). It simulates the optical signal of proximal, aerial and satellite imaging spectrometers and laser scanners, the 3d RB and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) signal, for any urban or natural landscape and any experimental or instrument configuration. It is freely available for research and teaching activities (***). After illustrating three significant sources of inaccuracy in RS interpretation, five recent dART advances are presented: RT in the atmosphere and topography, fast RS image simulation of large landscapes, SIF modelling, and satellite image inversion.

Many geographically distributed experts in different areas such as medical imaging, e-commerce, and digital museums, are in need of 3d models. Although 3d models are becoming widely available due to the recent technological advancement and modeling tools, we lack a digital library system where they can be searched and retrieved efficiently. In this paper, we focus on an efficient discovery service consisting of multilevel hierarchical browsing service that enables users to navigate large sets of 3d models. For this purpose, we use shape based clustering to abstract a large set of 3d models to a small set of representative models (key models). Our service applies clustering recursively to limit the number of key models that a user views at a time. Clustering is derived from metrics that are based on a concept of compression and similarity computation using surface signatures. Signatures are the two-dimensional representations of a 3d model and they can be used to define similarity between 3d models. We integrated the proposed browsing capability with 3dLIB, (a digital library for 3d models that we are building at Old dominion University), and evaluated the proposed browsing service using the Princeton Shape Benchmark (PSB). Our evaluation shows significant better precision and recall as compared to other approaches.

Solar imaging is currently an active area of research. In this study a 3d modeling technique for magnetic field lines on Sun is provided. Magnetic field foot prints are detected from SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) / MdI (Michelson doppler Imager) Magnetogram images. Using negative and positive footprints possible dipole pairs are found according to their proximity. Then using this data, 3d models are built on bipolar coordinates and placed on detected pairs after transformations.

With the advances in medical imaging, we can now extract quantitative information about human anatomical structures in three dimensions from images of various modalities. But visualization of anatomical structures and finite element analysis are two technical problems for representation of biomedical objects and simulation of physiological behavior. We describe the component of our workstation that contributes to the automatic generation of 3d physical-based meshes used in biomechanical engineering analysis and visualization of complex anatomical structures. This component extends the provision of visual information of the human spine to physical-based analysis for predicting the effects of treatment. These effects range from instrumentation in deformity correction, treatments on the courses of nerves and the resulting strains to the eventual interaction between bone and implants. One of the first applications of our approach was the used of the physical-based model to investigate the injury to human spine among airforce pilots in high G flying.

Microwave biosensing is a rapidly growing field of bioengineering. The progress in micro- and nanotechnologies and the recent advances in microwave dielectric spectroscopy have allowed a rapid development in the miniaturization of high-frequency biosensors. There has therefore been intensive research during the last few years on investigating miniature microwave biosensors for liquid characterization. To contribute to the advancement of this challenging and stimulating field of research, the present contribution is devoted to the analysis of a microfluidic sensor based on a one-port coplanar interdigital capacitor (IdC). The high-frequency performance of the studied sensor is achieved by using the 3d finite-element method (FEM) by Ansoft's high frequency structure simulator (HFSS). The simulations are used for extracting and validating an equivalent-circuit model that can be further exploited for complex permittivity extraction of the material under test.

digital elevation model (dEM) is primarily a way of visualising 2d maps, photographs and images in 3d. Common uses of dEMs are creation of relief maps, rendering of 3d visualizations, rectification of satellites images and aerial photographs, creation of different physical models, etc. dEMs can be produced by different methods. In this study, dEMs are produced by 1:25000 digital topographic maps, Light detection and Ranging (LIdAR) data, Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) data, and the accuracy of these models are analysed.

This paper analyses the accuracy of the orthorectification of the satellite imagery acquired by linear pushbroom sensors using the viewing model of the SPOT mission series. The effect of uncertainty of the initial values of the auxiliary ephemeris and attitude data on the accuracy of the mapping product was investigated. The optimal number and distribution of ground reference points depending on the used digital Elevation Model was in the focus of the research. The proposed approach can be applied to other high resolution satellite imaging systems when the physical sensor model is known. A very good accuracy of geocoded image was achieved for SPOT-2 Level 1A imagery over Plovdiv (Bulgaria).

Pathologies in soft tissues are associated with changes in their elastic properties. Tumor tissues are usually stiffer than the fat tissues and other normal tissues and show the nonlinear behavior in large deformations. There have been a lot of researches about elastography (linear and nonlinear) as a new detecting technique based on mechanical behavior of tissue. In order to formulate the tissue's nonlinear behavior, a strain energy function is required. For better estimation of nonlinear tissue parameters in elasticity imaging, non linear stress-strain curve of phantom is used. This work presents hyperelastic measurement results of tissue-mimicking phantom undergoing large deformation during uniaxial compression. For phantom samples, 8 hyperelastic models have been used. The results indicate that polynomial model with N=2 is the most accurate in terms of fitting experimental data. To compare the results between elastic and hyperelastic model, a 3-d finite element numerical model developed based on two different materials of elastic and hyperelastic material properties. The comparison confirm the approach of other recent studies about necessity of hyperelastic elastography and state that hyperelastic elastography should be used to formulate a technique for breast cancer diagnosis.

The electronic display industry has begun a migration towards higher color gamut devices driven by LEd, OLEd, quantum dot and laser technologies capable of generating near monochromatic color stimuli in the traditional red, green, blue three-channel paradigm. The use of highly selective spectral stimuli, however, poses a risk to the consistency of visual experience amongst a group of disparate, but otherwise normal, color observers. Several models of spectral color vision have surfaced in recent research and are helping investigators to better understand the implications for color experience variability. The present research serves to summarize various color difference indices that may be useful in predicting the magnitude of observer response inconsistencies and applies them to simulations of current electronic displays as examples of potential concerns these new high-gamut technologies might raise. In particular, various laser-based displays are shown to perform with significantly increased observer variability versus traditional ITU-R Rec. 709 and SMPTE 431 RGB-primary displays utilized in the cinema industry. Further, observer metamerism can be reduced significantly with proper optimization of a multichannel projection system comprising seven explicitly designed primary spectra. © 2014 Society for imaging Science and Technology.

Sampling from diffusion probabilistic models (dPMs) can be viewed as a piecewise distribution transformation, which generally requires hundreds or thousands of steps of the inverse diffusion trajectory to get a high-quality image. recent progress in designing fast samplers for dPMs achieves a trade-off between sampling speed and sample quality by knowledge distillation or adjusting the variance schedule or the denoising equation. However, it can't be optimal in both aspects and often suffer from mode mixture in short steps. To tackle this problem, we innovatively regard inverse diffusion as an optimal transport (OT) problem between latents at different stages and propose the dPM-OT, a unified learning framework for fast dPMs with a direct expressway represented by OT map, which can generate highquality samples within around 10 function evaluations. By calculating the semi-discrete optimal transport map between the data latents and the white noise, we obtain an expressway from the prior distribution to the data distribution, while significantly alleviating the problem of mode mixture. In addition, we give the error bound of the proposed method, which theoretically guarantees the stability of the algorithm. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness and advantages of dPM-OT in terms of speed and quality (FId and mode mixture), thus representing an efficient solution for generative modeling.
