Astronomy is among the most popular courses that students select to fulfill their college science requirement at Queensborough Community College, New York City. recent advances in photonics now enable us to observe celestial objects from extrasolar planets to ultra deep space galaxies that are 13 billion light years away. These results are regularly reported in the popular press such as the New York Times and "Sky & Telescope" magazine. We upgraded our astronomy course to keep pace with these advances in optics and photonics. The laboratory hands-on exercises include observations in our observatory using a telescope with digital camera and CCd, spectrum analysis with grating, Java photonics simulation delivered over the Internet, and the use of virtual instruments in optics and photonics written with Labview. Advanced techniques such as interferometry are also included as demonstrations in the laboratory. The scientific principles were demonstrated to them to promote learning by inquiry. As a result of these teaching designs, the students gain a clearer understanding of the optics and photonics basis of the astronomical instrumentation reported in popular articles. The preliminary assessment was encouraging as measured by the number of questions received and the amount of popular press materials that the students brought to the classroom.

A 3d shape characterization that allows establishing robust similarity measurements is presented. This characterization is based on a new extended curvature feature called cone-curvature (CC), built on top of the recent modeling wave (MW) topological organization for 3d objects modeling meshes. Through the CC feature, flexible and extended surroundings geometry knowledge for every point of the solid surface is given. In order to reduce the dimensionality of this representation and after carrying out a study of the principal components the weighted cone-curvature (WCC) concept is defined. This reduction notoriously simplifies the volume of data handled in the model without loss of information. As an application, a similarity measurement based on the WCC feature has been defined and implemented to compare and recognize 3d objects using their models. Both the principal components analysis and the similarity applications have been experimentally tested in our lab and the main results are shown.

Three-dimensional ladar data are commonly used to perform scene understanding for outdoor mobile robots, specifically in natural terrain. One effective method is to classify points using features based on local point cloud distribution into surfaces, linear structures or clutter volumes. But the local features are computed using 3d points within a support-volume. Local and global point density variations and the presence of multiple manifolds make the problem of selecting the size of this support volume, or scale, challenging. In this paper, we adopt an approach inspired by recent developments in computational geometry (Mitra et al., 2005) and investigate the problem of automatic data-driven scale selection to improve point cloud classification. The approach is validated with results using data from different sensors in various environments classified into different terrain types (vegetation, solid surface and linear structure).

Finite element modeling (FEM) is a computational structural engineering technique that has been utilized to analyze the relationship between loads, various stresses, and deformation induced in bone and to design patient-specific orthopedic implants. For instance, the latest advances in FE model generation enhanced graphics in computer tomography and better segmentation techniques, increased the FEM precision, and developed the patient-specific simulated anatomies and the other mechanical and physical properties that are useful for orthopedic professionals. Three-dimensional (3d) model of the femur bone is extracted from digital imaging and Communications in Medicine (dICOM) images using MIMICS-21 software and further post-processing and analysis is done using ANSYS 18 version. The present study gives a comparative analysis of the FEM of the femur bone and the significant physiological variations in the femoral bone. The stress generation and total deformation of the healthy femur bone have been determined based on sex, age, and bodyweights from real-time data. The findings conclude that, in the case of females, the maximum bone strength and bone wall thickness are offered in 30–40 years age group and in the case of the male 40–50 years age group. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In recent years, distributed photovoltaics, decentralized wind power, new loads, electric vehicles, etc. have been connected to the power grid in a wide range, and the distribution network has become more active, with strong fluctuations, and large peak-to-valley differences. The management and coordination of distributed resources interaction put forward higher requirements. This paper conducts research on the data interconnection and mapping technology of virtual and real space for digital twins. The first step is to study the modeling and driving technology of data interconnection, fusion mechanism model, and information model based on the real twin of the power grid. Coordinate data and monitoring data of main and auxiliary equipment and the data interconnection mechanism of the power grid real scene twin, build a dual-mode driving method that integrates the mechanism model and data model;the second step is to study the power grid "virtual-real" space multi-service continuous mapping mechanism and real-time data. The panoramic mapping method realizes the continuous and real-time mapping of point data and surface data to the digital twin and realizes multi-block, multi-level, and multi-type mapping according to the steps of feature extraction, feature matching, model parameter estimation, transformation, and interpolation. The digital twin data is accurately matched;the third step is to study the efficient transmission and update integration technology of twin data in the power grid environment, research methods to improve the real-time and concurrency of data transmission, and research multi-source heterogeneous data dynamic update and integration technology. The paper describes a novel range data registration algorithm, specifically designed for accuracy, speed, and robustness. Like many recent registration techniques, our Robust-Closest-Patch algorithm (RCP) iteratively matches model patches to data surfaces based on the current pose and then re-estimates pose based on these matches. RCP has several novel features: 1) online registration is driven by low curvature patches computed from the model offline; 2) an approximate normal distance between a patch and a surface is used, avoiding the need to estimate local surface normal and curvature from noisy data; 3) pose is solved exactly by a linear system in six parameters, using a symmetric formulation of the rotation constraint; 4) robustness is ensured using an M-estimator that estimates both the rigid pose parameters and the error standard deviation. Results are shown using models and range data from turbine blade inspection.

Video-based segmentation and reconstruction techniques are predominantly extensions of techniques developed for the image domain treating each frame independently. These approaches ignore the temporal information contained in input videos which can lead to incoherent results. We propose a framework for joint segmentation and reconstruction which explicitly enforces temporal consistency by formulating the problem as an energy minimisation generalised to groups of frames. The main idea is to use optical flow in combination with a confidence measure to impose robust temporal smoothness constraints. Optimisation is performed using recent advances in the field of graph-cuts combined with practical considerations to reduce run-time and memory consumption. Experimental results with real sequences containing rapid motion demonstrate that the method is able to improve spatio-temporal coherence both in terms of segmentation and reconstruction without introducing any degradation in regions where optical flow fails due to fast motion.

We report on recent extensions to a surface matching algorithm based on local 3d signatures. This algorithm was previously shown to be effective in view registration of general surfaces and in object recognition from 3d model databases. We describe extensions to the basic matching algorithm which will enable it to address several challenging and often overlooked problems encountered with real data. First, we describe extensions that allow us to deal with data sets with large variations in resolution and with large data sets for which computational efficiency is a major issue. The applicability of the enhanced matching algorithm is illustrated by an example application: the construction of large terrain maps and the construction of accurate 3d models from unregistered views. Second, we describe extensions that facilitate the use of 3d object recognition in cases in which the scene contains a large amount of clutter (e.g., the object occupies 1% of the scene) and in which the scene presents a high degree of confusion (e.g., the model shape is close to other shapes in the scene). Those last two extensions involve learning recognition strategies from the description of the model and from the performance of the recognition algorithm using Bayesian and memory based learning techniques, respectively.

Brain Tumor is rapidly growing problem these days for every age group of people, and thus to accurately detect a tumor, it is essential that we render to automatic brain tumor segmentation. In this study, semantic 3d U-Net segmentation architecture is proposed using Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI). Basically this method not only detects the tumor but also convey the location of a tumor. In this, we have applied multiple preprocessing techniques for better results and the resultant of these multiple techniques is fed to the proposed architecture of U-Net. This paper has also tried to minimize the mean-variance problem, handle the different sizes of tumor and also to deal with address imbalance problem. In this study, different parameters are evaluated in terms of brain tumor segmentation i.e. dice similarity coefficient, Sensitivity, Specificity, Accuracy and Mean IoU. In the study, three classification models have also been used to evaluate the survival rate. The experiments have been evaluated using BraTS 2020 dataset with 98.91% accuracy for segmentation task.

In recent years many viewers decided to replace their old TV sets mostly thanks to virtually worldwide transition from analogue to digital TV broadcasting. The new displays are flat, thin and most probably support high-definition. But now there is a growing interest in the media industry towards stereoscopic television (3dTV). This attention is caused by the content producers but also by the consumer sector (i.e. the display industry). At first the article presents an overview of development in the area of 3d presentation of moving images which actively started more than 60 years ago. The article aims to summarize the phenomena on which the 3d technologies are based but also presents the latest trends in this area. diverse 3d display technologies are briefly explained, e.g. projection with special polarizing or colored glasses, flat displays combined with shutter glasses, autostereoscopic systems and other systems including volumetric imaging techniques. Stereoscopic systems have already settled firmly in public movie theaters. On the other hand the development in TV industry is still in its infancy. The article presents some recent recommendations for stereo TV systems and gives a prediction of 3d application spread into our homes.
